Linus Torvalds 902861e34c - Sumanth Korikkar has taught s390 to allocate hotplug-time page frames
from hotplugged memory rather than only from main memory.  Series
   "implement "memmap on memory" feature on s390".

 - Luis Chamberlain has added some additional xarray selftesting in the
   series "test_xarray: advanced API multi-index tests".
 
 - Muhammad Usama Anjum has reworked the selftest code to make its
   human-readable output conform to the TAP ("Test Anything Protocol")
   format.  Amongst other things, this opens up the use of third-party
   tools to parse and process out selftesting results.
 
 - Ryan Roberts has added fork()-time PTE batching of THP ptes in the
   series "mm/memory: optimize fork() with PTE-mapped THP".  Mainly
   targeted at arm64, this significantly speeds up fork() when the process
   has a large number of pte-mapped folios.
 
 - David Hildenbrand also gets in on the THP pte batching game in his
   series "mm/memory: optimize unmap/zap with PTE-mapped THP".  It
   implements batching during munmap() and other pte teardown situations.
   The microbenchmark improvements are nice.
 
 - And in the series "Transparent Contiguous PTEs for User Mappings" Ryan
   Roberts further utilizes arm's pte's contiguous bit ("contpte
   mappings").  Kernel build times on arm64 improved nicely.  Ryan's series
   "Address some contpte nits" provides some followup work.
 
 - In the series "mm/hugetlb: Restore the reservation" Breno Leitao has
   fixed an obscure hugetlb race which was causing unnecessary page faults.
   He has also added a reproducer under the selftest code.
 
 - In the series "selftests/mm: Output cleanups for the compaction test",
   Mark Brown did what the title claims.
 
 - Kinsey Ho has added the series "mm/mglru: code cleanup and refactoring".

Tiezhu Yang d831091484 kasan: docs: update descriptions about test file and module
After commit f7e01ab828 ("kasan: move tests to mm/kasan/"), the test
file is renamed to mm/kasan/kasan_test.c and the test module is renamed to
kasan_test.ko, so update the descriptions in the document.

While at it, update the line number and testcase number when the tests
kmalloc_large_oob_right and kmalloc_double_kzfree failed to sync with the
current code in mm/kasan/kasan_test.c.

Qing Zhang 5aa4ac64e6 LoongArch: Add KASAN (Kernel Address Sanitizer) support
1/8 of kernel addresses reserved for shadow memory. But for LoongArch,
There are a lot of holes between different segments and valid address
space (256T available) is insufficient to map all these segments to kasan
shadow memory with the common formula provided by kasan core, saying
(addr >> KASAN_SHADOW_SCALE_SHIFT) + KASAN_SHADOW_OFFSET

So LoongArch has a arch-specific mapping formula, different segments are
mapped individually, and only limited space lengths of these specific
segments are mapped to shadow.

At early boot stage the whole shadow region populated with just one
physical page (kasan_early_shadow_page). Later, this page is reused as
readonly zero shadow for some memory that kasan currently don't track.
After mapping the physical memory, pages for shadow memory are allocated
and mapped.

Functions like memset()/memcpy()/memmove() do a lot of memory accesses.
If bad pointer passed to one of these function it is important to be
caught. Compiler's instrumentation cannot do this since these functions
are written in assembly.

KASan replaces memory functions with manually instrumented variants.
Original functions declared as weak symbols so strong definitions in
mm/kasan/kasan.c could replace them. Original functions have aliases
with '__' prefix in names, so we could call non-instrumented variant
if needed.

Marco Elver 452c03fdbe kasan: add support for kasan.fault=panic_on_write
KASAN's boot time kernel parameter 'kasan.fault=' currently supports
'report' and 'panic', which results in either only reporting bugs or also
panicking on reports.

However, some users may wish to have more control over when KASAN reports
result in a kernel panic: in particular, KASAN reported invalid _writes_
are of special interest, because they have greater potential to corrupt
random kernel memory or be more easily exploited.

To panic on invalid writes only, introduce 'kasan.fault=panic_on_write',
which allows users to choose to continue running on invalid reads, but
panic only on invalid writes.

Andrey Konovalov 44383cef54 kasan: allow sampling page_alloc allocations for HW_TAGS
As Hardware Tag-Based KASAN is intended to be used in production, its
performance impact is crucial.  As page_alloc allocations tend to be big,
tagging and checking all such allocations can introduce a significant
slowdown.

Add two new boot parameters that allow to alleviate that slowdown:

- kasan.page_alloc.sample, which makes Hardware Tag-Based KASAN tag only
  every Nth page_alloc allocation with the order configured by the second
  added parameter (default: tag every such allocation).

- kasan.page_alloc.sample.order, which makes sampling enabled by the first
  parameter only affect page_alloc allocations with the order equal or
  greater than the specified value (default: 3, see below).

The exact performance improvement caused by using the new parameters
depends on their values and the applied workload.

The chosen default value for kasan.page_alloc.sample.order is 3, which
matches both PAGE_ALLOC_COSTLY_ORDER and SKB_FRAG_PAGE_ORDER.  This is
done for two reasons:

1. PAGE_ALLOC_COSTLY_ORDER is "the order at which allocations are deemed
   costly to service", which corresponds to the idea that only large and
   thus costly allocations are supposed to sampled.

2. One of the workloads targeted by this patch is a benchmark that sends
   a large amount of data over a local loopback connection. Most multi-page
   data allocations in the networking subsystem have the order of
   SKB_FRAG_PAGE_ORDER (or PAGE_ALLOC_COSTLY_ORDER).

When running a local loopback test on a testing MTE-enabled device in sync
mode, enabling Hardware Tag-Based KASAN introduces a ~50% slowdown. 
Applying this patch and setting kasan.page_alloc.sampling to a value
higher than 1 allows to lower the slowdown.  The performance improvement
saturates around the sampling interval value of 10 with the default
sampling page order of 3.  This lowers the slowdown to ~20%.  The slowdown
in real scenarios involving the network will likely be better.

Enabling page_alloc sampling has a downside: KASAN misses bad accesses to
a page_alloc allocation that has not been tagged.  This lowers the value
of KASAN as a security mitigation.

However, based on measuring the number of page_alloc allocations of
different orders during boot in a test build, sampling with the default
kasan.page_alloc.sample.order value affects only ~7% of allocations.  The
rest ~93% of allocations are still checked deterministically.

Andrey Konovalov 80b92bfe3b kasan: dynamically allocate stack ring entries
Instead of using a large static array, allocate the stack ring dynamically
via memblock_alloc().

The size of the stack ring is controlled by a new kasan.stack_ring_size
command-line parameter.  When kasan.stack_ring_size is not provided, the
default value of 32 << 10 is used.

Vincenzo Frascino 2d27e58514 kasan: Extend KASAN mode kernel parameter
Architectures supported by KASAN_HW_TAGS can provide an asymmetric mode
of execution. On an MTE enabled arm64 hw for example this can be
identified with the asymmetric tagging mode of execution. In particular,
when such a mode is present, the CPU triggers a fault on a tag mismatch
during a load operation and asynchronously updates a register when a tag
mismatch is detected during a store operation.

Extend the KASAN HW execution mode kernel command line parameter to
support asymmetric mode.

David Gow 3ff16d30f5 kasan: test: improve failure message in KUNIT_EXPECT_KASAN_FAIL()
The KUNIT_EXPECT_KASAN_FAIL() macro currently uses KUNIT_EXPECT_EQ() to
compare fail_data.report_expected and fail_data.report_found.  This always
gave a somewhat useless error message on failure, but the addition of
extra compile-time checking with READ_ONCE() has caused it to get much
longer, and be truncated before anything useful is displayed.

Instead, just check fail_data.report_found by hand (we've just set
report_expected to 'true'), and print a better failure message with
KUNIT_FAIL().  Because of this, report_expected is no longer used
anywhere, and can be removed.

Beforehand, a failure in:
KUNIT_EXPECT_KASAN_FAIL(test, ((volatile char *)area)[3100]);
would have looked like:

Vincenzo Frascino 2603f8a78d kasan: Add KASAN mode kernel parameter
Architectures supported by KASAN_HW_TAGS can provide a sync or async mode
of execution. On an MTE enabled arm64 hw for example this can be identified
with the synchronous or asynchronous tagging mode of execution.
In synchronous mode, an exception is triggered if a tag check fault occurs.
In asynchronous mode, if a tag check fault occurs, the TFSR_EL1 register is
updated asynchronously. The kernel checks the corresponding bits
periodically.

KASAN requires a specific kernel command line parameter to make use of this
hw features.

Add KASAN HW execution mode kernel command line parameter.

Note: This patch adds the kasan.mode kernel parameter and the
sync/async kernel command line options to enable the described features.

[ Add a new var instead of exposing kasan_arg_mode to be consistent with
  flags for other command line arguments. ]

Andrey Konovalov 1cc4cdb521 kasan: fix stack traces dependency for HW_TAGS
Currently, whether the alloc/free stack traces collection is enabled by
default for hardware tag-based KASAN depends on CONFIG_DEBUG_KERNEL.
The intention for this dependency was to only enable collection on slow
debug kernels due to a significant perf and memory impact.

As it turns out, CONFIG_DEBUG_KERNEL is not considered a debug option
and is enabled on many productions kernels including Android and Ubuntu.
As the result, this dependency is pointless and only complicates the
code and documentation.

Having stack traces collection disabled by default would make the
hardware mode work differently to to the software ones, which is
confusing.

This change removes the dependency and enables stack traces collection
by default.

Looking into the future, this default might makes sense for production
kernels, assuming we implement a fast stack trace collection approach.

Andrey Konovalov 76bc99e81a kasan: fix HW_TAGS boot parameters
The initially proposed KASAN command line parameters are redundant.

This change drops the complex "kasan.mode=off/prod/full" parameter and
adds a simpler kill switch "kasan=off/on" instead.  The new parameter
together with the already existing ones provides a cleaner way to
express the same set of features.

The full set of parameters with this change:

  kasan=off/on             - whether KASAN is enabled
  kasan.fault=report/panic - whether to only print a report or also panic
  kasan.stacktrace=off/on  - whether to collect alloc/free stack traces

Default values:

  kasan=on
  kasan.fault=report
  kasan.stacktrace=on  (if CONFIG_DEBUG_KERNEL=y)
  kasan.stacktrace=off (otherwise)

Andrey Konovalov 1f600626b3 kasan: rename KASAN_SHADOW_* to KASAN_GRANULE_*
This is a preparatory commit for the upcoming addition of a new hardware
tag-based (MTE-based) KASAN mode.

The new mode won't be using shadow memory, but will still use the concept
of memory granules.  Each memory granule maps to a single metadata entry:
8 bytes per one shadow byte for generic mode, 16 bytes per one shadow byte
for software tag-based mode, and 16 bytes per one allocation tag for
hardware tag-based mode.

Rename KASAN_SHADOW_SCALE_SIZE to KASAN_GRANULE_SIZE, and
KASAN_SHADOW_MASK to KASAN_GRANULE_MASK.

Also use MASK when used as a mask, otherwise use SIZE.

No functional changes.

Daniel Axtens 3c5c3cfb9e kasan: support backing vmalloc space with real shadow memory
Patch series "kasan: support backing vmalloc space with real shadow
memory", v11.

Currently, vmalloc space is backed by the early shadow page.  This means
that kasan is incompatible with VMAP_STACK.

This series provides a mechanism to back vmalloc space with real,
dynamically allocated memory.  I have only wired up x86, because that's
the only currently supported arch I can work with easily, but it's very
easy to wire up other architectures, and it appears that there is some
work-in-progress code to do this on arm64 and s390.

In terms of implementation details:

Most mappings in vmalloc space are small, requiring less than a full
page of shadow space.  Allocating a full shadow page per mapping would
therefore be wasteful.  Furthermore, to ensure that different mappings
use different shadow pages, mappings would have to be aligned to
KASAN_SHADOW_SCALE_SIZE * PAGE_SIZE.

Instead, share backing space across multiple mappings.  Allocate a
backing page when a mapping in vmalloc space uses a particular page of
the shadow region.  This page can be shared by other vmalloc mappings
later on.

We hook in to the vmap infrastructure to lazily clean up unused shadow
memory.

Testing with test_vmalloc.sh on an x86 VM with 2 vCPUs shows that:

 - Turning on KASAN, inline instrumentation, without vmalloc, introuduces
   a 4.1x-4.2x slowdown in vmalloc operations.

 - Turning this on introduces the following slowdowns over KASAN:
     * ~1.76x slower single-threaded (test_vmalloc.sh performance)
     * ~2.18x slower when both cpus are performing operations
       simultaneously (test_vmalloc.sh sequential_test_order=1)

This is unfortunate but given that this is a debug feature only, not the
end of the world.  The benchmarks are also a stress-test for the vmalloc
subsystem: they're not indicative of an overall 2x slowdown!

This patch (of 4):

To avoid the difficulties around swapping mappings around, this code
expects that the part of the shadow region that covers the vmalloc space
will not be covered by the early shadow page, but will be left unmapped.
This will require changes in arch-specific code.

This allows KASAN with VMAP_STACK, and may be helpful for architectures
that do not have a separate module space (e.g.  powerpc64, which I am
currently working on).  It also allows relaxing the module alignment
back to PAGE_SIZE.

Testing with test_vmalloc.sh on an x86 VM with 2 vCPUs shows that:

Vlastimil Babka 0fe9a448a0 mm, page_owner: decouple freeing stack trace from debug_pagealloc
Commit 8974558f49 ("mm, page_owner, debug_pagealloc: save and dump
freeing stack trace") enhanced page_owner to also store freeing stack
trace, when debug_pagealloc is also enabled.  KASAN would also like to
do this [1] to improve error reports to debug e.g. UAF issues.

Kirill has suggested that the freeing stack trace saving should be also
possible to be enabled separately from KASAN or debug_pagealloc, i.e.
with an extra boot option.  Qian argued that we have enough options
already, and avoiding the extra overhead is not worth the complications
in the case of a debugging option.  Kirill noted that the extra stack
handle in struct page_owner requires 0.1% of memory.

This patch therefore enables free stack saving whenever page_owner is
enabled, regardless of whether debug_pagealloc or KASAN is also enabled.
KASAN kernels booted with page_owner=on will thus benefit from the
improved error reports.
