Kefeng Wang 5acc17fd35 mm: page_idle: convert page idle to use a folio
Firstly, make page_idle_get_page() return a folio, also rename it to
page_idle_get_folio(), then, use it to convert page_idle_bitmap_read() and
page_idle_bitmap_write() functions.

Minchan Kim 6d4675e601 mm: don't be stuck to rmap lock on reclaim path
The rmap locks(i_mmap_rwsem and anon_vma->root->rwsem) could be contended
under memory pressure if processes keep working on their vmas(e.g., fork,
mmap, munmap). It makes reclaim path stuck. In our real workload traces,
we see kswapd is waiting the lock for 300ms+(worst case, a sec) and it
makes other processes entering direct reclaim, which were also stuck on
the lock.

This patch makes lru aging path try_lock mode like shink_page_list so the
reclaim context will keep working with next lru pages without being stuck.
if it found the rmap lock contended, it rotates the page back to head of
lru in both active/inactive lrus to make them consistent behavior, which
is basic starting point rather than adding more heristic.

Since this patch introduces a new "contended" field as out-param along
with try_lock in-param in rmap_walk_control, it's not immutable any longer
if the try_lock is set so remove const keywords on rmap related functions.
Since rmap walking is already expensive operation, I doubt the const
would help sizable benefit( And we didn't have it until 5.17).

In a heavy app workload in Android, trace shows following statistics. It
almost removes rmap lock contention from reclaim path.

Matthew Wilcox (Oracle) 84fbbe2189 mm/rmap: Constify the rmap_walk_control argument
The rmap walking functions do not modify the rmap_walk_control, and
page_idle_clear_pte_refs() takes advantage of that to move construction
of the rmap_walk_control to compile time. This lets us remove an
unclean cast.

SeongJae Park 1c676e0d9b mm/idle_page_tracking: make PG_idle reusable
PG_idle and PG_young allow the two PTE Accessed bit users, Idle Page
Tracking and the reclaim logic concurrently work while not interfering
with each other. That is, when they need to clear the Accessed bit, they
set PG_young to represent the previous state of the bit, respectively.
And when they need to read the bit, if the bit is cleared, they further
read the PG_young to know whether the other has cleared the bit meanwhile
or not.

For yet another user of the PTE Accessed bit, we could add another page
flag, or extend the mechanism to use the flags. For the DAMON usecase,
however, we don't need to do that just yet. IDLE_PAGE_TRACKING and DAMON
are mutually exclusive, so there's only ever going to be one user of the
current set of flags.

In this commit, we split out the CONFIG options to allow for the use of
PG_young and PG_idle outside of idle page tracking.

In the next commit, DAMON's reference implementation of the virtual memory
address space monitoring primitives will use it.

Hugh Dickins 880fc6ba62 mm: page_idle_get_page() does not need lru_lock
It is necessary for page_idle_get_page() to recheck PageLRU() after
get_page_unless_zero(), but holding lru_lock around that serves no
useful purpose, and adds to lru_lock contention: delete it.

See https://lore.kernel.org/lkml/20150504031722.GA2768@blaptop for the
discussion that led to lru_lock there; but __page_set_anon_rmap() now uses
WRITE_ONCE(), and I see no other risk in page_idle_clear_pte_refs() using
rmap_walk() (beyond the risk of racing PageAnon->PageKsm, mostly but not
entirely prevented by page_count() check in ksm.c's write_protect_page():
that risk being shared with page_referenced() and not helped by lru_lock).

'Idle page tracking' users can pass random pfn that might be mapped to an

'page_idle_get_page()' to use 'pfn_to_online_page()' instead of
'pfn_valid()' and 'pfn_to_page()' combination, so that the pfn mapped to
an offline page can be skipped.

Andrey Ryabinin f4b7e272b5 mm: remove zone_lru_lock() function, access ->lru_lock directly
We have common pattern to access lru_lock from a page pointer:
	zone_lru_lock(page_zone(page))

Which is silly, because it unfolds to this:
	&NODE_DATA(page_to_nid(page))->node_zones[page_zonenum(page)]->zone_pgdat->lru_lock
while we can simply do
	&NODE_DATA(page_to_nid(page))->lru_lock

Remove zone_lru_lock() function, since it's only complicate things. Use
'page_pgdat(page)->lru_lock' pattern instead.

When walking PTE-mapped THP by pvmw, all relevant PTEs will be checked

referenced flag will be cleared.

Just set referenced when ptep{pmdp}_clear_young_notify() returns true.

Greg Kroah-Hartman b24413180f License cleanup: add SPDX GPL-2.0 license identifier to files with no license
Many source files in the tree are missing licensing information, which
makes it harder for compliance tools to determine the correct license.

By default all files without license information are under the default
license of the kernel, which is GPL version 2.

Update the files which contain no license information with the 'GPL-2.0'
SPDX license identifier. The SPDX identifier is a legally binding
shorthand, which can be used instead of the full boiler plate text.

This patch is based on work done by Thomas Gleixner and Kate Stewart and
Philippe Ombredanne.

How this work was done:

Patches were generated and checked against linux-4.14-rc6 for a subset of
the use cases:
 - file had no licensing information it it.
 - file was a */uapi/* one with no licensing information in it,
 - file was a */uapi/* one with existing licensing information,

Further patches will be generated in subsequent months to fix up cases
where non-standard license headers were used, and references to license
had to be inferred by heuristics based on keywords.

The analysis to determine which SPDX License Identifier to be applied to
a file was done in a spreadsheet of side by side results from of the
output of two independent scanners (ScanCode & Windriver) producing SPDX
tag:value files created by Philippe Ombredanne. Philippe prepared the
base worksheet, and did an initial spot review of a few 1000 files.

The 4.13 kernel was the starting point of the analysis with 60,537 files
assessed. Kate Stewart did a file by file comparison of the scanner
results in the spreadsheet to determine which SPDX license identifier(s)
to be applied to the file. She confirmed any determination that was not
immediately clear with lawyers working with the Linux Foundation.

Criteria used to select files for SPDX license identifier tagging was:
 - Files considered eligible had to be source code files.
 - Make and config files were included as candidates if they contained >5
   lines of source
 - File already had some variant of a license header in it (even if <5
   lines).

All documentation files were explicitly excluded.

The following heuristics were used to determine which SPDX license
identifiers to apply.

 - when both scanners couldn't find any license traces, file was
considered to have no license information in it, and the top level
   COPYING file license applied.

For non */uapi/* files that summary was:

   SPDX license identifier # files
   ---------------------------------------------------|-------
   GPL-2.0 11139

and resulted in the first patch in this series.

If that file was a */uapi/* path one, it was "GPL-2.0 WITH
Linux-syscall-note" otherwise it was "GPL-2.0". Results of that was:

   SPDX license identifier # files
   ---------------------------------------------------|-------
   GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note 930

and resulted in the second patch in this series.

 - if a file had some form of licensing information in it, and was one
of the */uapi/* ones, it was denoted with the Linux-syscall-note if
any GPL family license was found in the file or had no licensing in
it (per prior point). Results summary:

   SPDX license identifier # files
   ---------------------------------------------------|------
   GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note 270
   GPL-2.0+ WITH Linux-syscall-note 169
   ((GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note) OR BSD-2-Clause) 21
   ((GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note) OR BSD-3-Clause) 17
   LGPL-2.1+ WITH Linux-syscall-note 15
   GPL-1.0+ WITH Linux-syscall-note 14
   ((GPL-2.0+ WITH Linux-syscall-note) OR BSD-3-Clause) 5
   LGPL-2.0+ WITH Linux-syscall-note 4
   LGPL-2.1 WITH Linux-syscall-note 3
   ((GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note) OR MIT) 3
   ((GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note) AND MIT) 1

and that resulted in the third patch in this series.

 - when the two scanners agreed on the detected license(s), that became
   the concluded license(s).

 - when there was disagreement between the two scanners (one detected a
license but the other didn't, or they both detected different
licenses) a manual inspection of the file occurred.

 - In most cases a manual inspection of the information in the file
resulted in a clear resolution of the license that should apply (and
which scanner probably needed to revisit its heuristics).

 - When it was not immediately clear, the license identifier was
confirmed with lawyers working with the Linux Foundation.

 - If there was any question as to the appropriate license identifier,
the file was flagged for further research and to be revisited later
   in time.

In total, over 70 hours of logged manual review was done on the
spreadsheet to determine the SPDX license identifiers to apply to the
source files by Kate, Philippe, Thomas and, in some cases, confirmation
by lawyers working with the Linux Foundation.

Kate also obtained a third independent scan of the 4.13 code base from
FOSSology, and compared selected files where the other two scanners
disagreed against that SPDX file, to see if there was new insights. The
Windriver scanner is based on an older version of FOSSology in part, so
they are related.

Thomas did random spot checks in about 500 files from the spreadsheets
for the uapi headers and agreed with SPDX license identifier in the
files he inspected. For the non-uapi files Thomas did random spot checks
in about 15000 files.

In initial set of patches against 4.14-rc6, 3 files were found to have
copy/paste license identifier errors, and have been fixed to reflect the
correct identifier.

Additionally Philippe spent 10 hours this week doing a detailed manual
inspection and review of the 12,461 patched files from the initial patch
version early this week with:
 - a full scancode scan run, collecting the matched texts, detected
   license ids and scores
 - reviewing anything where there was a license detected (about 500+
files) to ensure that the applied SPDX license was correct
 - reviewing anything where there was no detection but the patch license
was not GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note to ensure that the applied
   SPDX license was correct

This produced a worksheet with 20 files needing minor correction. This
worksheet was then exported into 3 different .csv files for the
different types of files to be modified.

These .csv files were then reviewed by Greg. Thomas wrote a script to
parse the csv files and add the proper SPDX tag to the file, in the
format that the file expected. This script was further refined by Greg
based on the output to detect more types of files automatically and to
distinguish between header and source .c files (which need different
comment types.) Finally Greg ran the script using the .csv files to
generate the patches.

Mel Gorman a52633d8e9 mm, vmscan: move lru_lock to the node
Node-based reclaim requires node-based LRUs and locking. This is a
preparation patch that just moves the lru_lock to the node so later

patch makes contention worse because the LRU lock is hotter and direct
reclaim and kswapd can contend on the same lock even when reclaiming
from different zones.

Vladimir Davydov 33c3fc71c8 mm: introduce idle page tracking
Knowing the portion of memory that is not used by a certain application or
memory cgroup (idle memory) can be useful for partitioning the system
efficiently, e.g. by setting memory cgroup limits appropriately.
Currently, the only means to estimate the amount of idle memory provided
by the kernel is /proc/PID/{clear_refs,smaps}: the user can clear the
access bit for all pages mapped to a particular process by writing 1 to
clear_refs, wait for some time, and then count smaps:Referenced. However,
this method has two serious shortcomings:

 - it does not count unmapped file pages
 - it affects the reclaimer logic

To overcome these drawbacks, this patch introduces two new page flags,
Idle and Young, and a new sysfs file, /sys/kernel/mm/page_idle/bitmap.
A page's Idle flag can only be set from userspace by setting bit in
/sys/kernel/mm/page_idle/bitmap at the offset corresponding to the page,
and it is cleared whenever the page is accessed either through page tables
(it is cleared in page_referenced() in this case) or using the read(2)
system call (mark_page_accessed()). Thus by setting the Idle flag for
pages of a particular workload, which can be found e.g. by reading
/proc/PID/pagemap, waiting for some time to let the workload access its
working set, and then reading the bitmap file, one can estimate the amount
of pages that are not used by the workload.

The Young page flag is used to avoid interference with the memory
reclaimer. A page's Young flag is set whenever the Access bit of a page
table entry pointing to the page is cleared by writing to the bitmap file.
If page_referenced() is called on a Young page, it will add 1 to its
return value, therefore concealing the fact that the Access bit was
cleared.

Note, since there is no room for extra page flags on 32 bit, this feature
uses extended page flags when compiled on 32 bit.
