Set the master volume to about 6 or 8% in alsamixer. This will
attenuate the output enough for better sound quality.
Note: Only stereo enabled at present.
The distortion is caused by the output path after the DSP
adding 12dB gain to the output while still in digital mode,
resulting in wrap around distortion.

We have found some issues with Au1550 AC'97 OSS driver in 2.6
(sound/oss/au1550_ac97.c), though it also should concern 2.4 driver
(drivers/sound/au1550_psc.c).
start_dac() grabs a spinlock already held by its caller, au1550_write().
This doesn't show up with the standard UP spinlock impelmentation but when
the different one (mutex based) is in use, a lockup happens.
And the interrupt handlers also didn't grab the spinlock -- that's OK in
the usual kernel but not when the IRQ handlers are threaded. So, they're
grabbing the spinlock now (as every correct interrupt handler should do).

Earlier I unifdefed PageCompound, so that snd_pcm_mmap_control_nopage and
others can give out a 0-order component of a higher-order page, which won't
be mistakenly freed when zap_pte_range unmaps it. But many Bad page states
reported a PG_reserved was freed after all: I had missed that we need to
say __GFP_COMP to get compound page behaviour.
Some of these higher-order pages are allocated by snd_malloc_pages, some by
snd_malloc_dev_pages; or if SBUS, by sbus_alloc_consistent - but that has
no gfp arg, so add __GFP_COMP into its sparc32/64 implementations.
I'm still rather puzzled that DRM seems not to need a similar change.

Something noticed when studying use of VM_RESERVED in different drivers:
snd_usX2Y_hwdep_pcm_vm_nopage omitted to get_page: fixed.
And how did this work before? Aargh! That nopage is returning a page from
within a buffer allocated by snd_malloc_pages, which allocates a high-order
page, then does SetPageReserved on each 0-order page within.
That would have worked in 2.6.14, because when the area was unmapped,
PageReserved inhibited put_page. 2.6.15-rc1 removed that inhibition (while
leaving ineffective PageReserveds around for now), but it hasn't caused
trouble because.. we've not been freeing from VM_RESERVED at all.

ever since suspend to disk works I had the problem that headphone
(un)plugging doesn't get detected properly anymore after the first
resume.
Reloading the module worked around this ever since, however the real
cause of the problem was that after a resume the driver only got
interrupts on "unplug" not on "plug". Reactivating the headphone status
interrupt in tumbler_resume fixes this. This shouldn't cause
any trouble with software suspend, but it would be nice if somebody
could confirm this:

This patch removes almost all inclusions of linux/version.h. The 3
#defines are unused in most of the touched files.
A few drivers use the simple KERNEL_VERSION(a,b,c) macro, which is
unfortunatly in linux/version.h.
There are also lots of #ifdef for long obsolete kernels, this was not
touched. In a few places, the linux/version.h include was move to where
the LINUX_VERSION_CODE was used.

If we submit all our URBs when a playback stream is started, the first
hwptr_done update for each URB happens at the same time. This results
in an underrun when there isn't enough PCM data available at this
point for all URBs.
To avoid this, we begin submitting our URBs earlier (when the stream
is prepared), with empy packets. When the stream is started, the
prepare_playback_urb() call for each URB will be run only when the
respective URB has completed previously, so the first hwptr_done
updates will be done nicely staggered.

this is now an even much more reworked patch (#3) for my azt3328.c ALSA driver.
IOW I spent another 4 evenings to get the sequencer timer to work properly
(my head is still hurting) and do lots of other cleanups.
Note that despite the extensive sequencer timer additions, the driver object
is still only 2kB bigger than the previous version, due to those many
optimizations...
Changes in version #3:
- fully working ALSA sequencer timer support for the card's 1024000Hz
DirectX timer (downscaling adjustable via seqtimer_scaling module param)
- an insane amount of code optimizations
- many, many cleanups

- FOUND the 1us DirectX timer area (yay!), made the code respect it

The current snd-nm256 driver can cause Dell Latitude CSx laptops to
lock-up during module (un)load. I have isolated this to the writes to
the control port register at offset 0x6cc which were not already
protected by the existing reset_workaround.
I tried grouping these writes with the existing reset_workaround
clause, but that caused the driver to have (un)load problems on the
Dell Latitude LS laptops. So, I have implemented a reset_workaround_2
clause (please feel free to suggest a better name!) to cover this
situation and added a quirk entry for the CSx laptops.

When no default timer frequency has been set, initialize_timer() just
uses the maximum frequency supported by the timer, which is ridiculously
high on 96 kHz timers.
This patch introduces a default frequency of 1000 Hz for this case, and
makes sure that a frequency set by the user isn't too high.

The change only affects the via823x kind of chips.
Here the via8233_pcm_pointer_hw() function
(named snd_via8233_pcm_pointer() before)
needed to loop until a non zero position is red from the chip.
Measurements have shown that more than 200 loops are typically needed on
an Athlon64.
As io-reads cost many cycles, those loops sum up huge.
via8233_pcm_pointer_hw() runs either in interrupt or with interrupts
disabled. So it introduces significant interrupt latency.
The patch introduces a calculated position value hwptr_done,
that is updated by the interrupt routine when a period is completed.
It is only used, if the 823x chip returns a zero position, which can't
be interpreted reliably.
Further optimisation is applied on the 8233 chip's interrupt routine:
Only the SGD_SHADOW is read, as it contains all infos needed.
We ommit ~5 more register reads that way.

This macro worsens the readability of codes. They should be either
normal if() or removable asserts.

On my Acer Aspire 3003LCi laptop, the speaker volume is not controlled
by the master control, but by the headphone control. Enabling the
'hp_only' quirk corrects this. The patch below adds this device to the
list of known quirks.

This adds the magic IO wakeup code for the CardBus version of the
Creative Labs Audigy 2 to the snd-emu10k1 driver.
Without the magic IO enable sequence, reading from the IO region of the
card will fail spectacularly, and the machine will hang.
My next task will be getting the driver to actually play sound without
distortion.

I recently picked up my older work to remove unnecessary #includes of
sched.h, starting from a patch by Dave Jones to not include sched.h
from module.h. This reduces the number of indirect includes of sched.h
by ~300. Another ~400 pointless direct includes can be removed after
this disentangling (patch to follow later).
However, quite a few indirect includes need to be fixed up for this.
In order to feed the patches through -mm with as little disturbance as
possible, I've split out the fixes I accumulated up to now (complete for
i386 and x86_64, more archs to follow later) and post them before the real
patch. This way this large part of the patch is kept simple with only
adding #includes, and all hunks are independent of each other. So if any
hunk rejects or gets in the way of other patches, just drop it. My scripts
will pick it up again in the next round.

Remove PageReserved() calls from core code by tightening VM_RESERVED
handling in mm/ to cover PageReserved functionality.
PageReserved special casing is removed from get_page and put_page.
All setting and clearing of PageReserved is retained, and it is now flagged
in the page_alloc checks to help ensure we don't introduce any refcount
based freeing of Reserved pages.
MAP_PRIVATE, PROT_WRITE of VM_RESERVED regions is tentatively being
deprecated. We never completely handled it correctly anyway, and is be
reintroduced in future if required (Hugh has a proof of concept).
Once PageReserved() calls are removed from kernel/power/swsusp.c, and all
arch/ and driver code, the Set and Clear calls, and the PG_reserved bit can
be trivially removed.
Last real user of PageReserved is swsusp, which uses PageReserved to
determine whether a struct page points to valid memory or not. This still
needs to be addressed (a generic page_is_ram() should work).
A last caveat: the ZERO_PAGE is now refcounted and managed with rmap (and
thus mapcounted and count towards shared rss). These writes to the struct
page could cause excessive cacheline bouncing on big systems. There are a
number of ways this could be addressed if it is an issue.

In PM v1, all devices were called at SUSPEND_DISABLE level. Then
all devices were called at SUSPEND_SAVE_STATE level, and finally
SUSPEND_POWER_DOWN level. However, with PM v2, to maintain
compatibility for platform devices, I arranged for the PM v2
suspend/resume callbacks to call the old PM v1 suspend/resume
callbacks three times with each level in order so that existing
drivers continued to work.
Since this is obsolete infrastructure which is no longer necessary,
we can remove it. Here's an (untested) patch to do exactly that.

This patch enables SBus support for the cs4231 sound driver.
It is tested on an Ultra2. Capture and playback both work.
I experienced lags and crashes using certain threaded
players like ogg123 and mp3blaster, while the former is
lagging far more. This behavior may be specific to SMP
systems. It is reproducable using the dummy sound card
driver. Sox works flawlessly.
Setting up the calculation of ptr in snd_cs4231_playback_pointer
was a bit strange. I got it to work by not incrementing the
[pc]_periods_sent counter when starting DMA the first time
in cs4231_dma_trigger. Therefore this dummy thing.

broke the RME32 and RME96 drivers, since the PCI IDs they use seem to have
changed names. Here's a patch to fix this -- compile tested only, since I
have no idea what the hardware even is.
Fix the build of the RME32 and RME96 drivers by having them use the
PCI_DEVICE_ID_RME_xxx names defined in <linux/pci_ids.h> instead of the
PCI_DEVICE_ID_xxx names that they used to define themselves.
Also fix the typo in the id PCI_DEVICE_IDRME__DIGI96_8_PAD_OR_PST so the
name is PCI_DEVICE_ID_RME_DIGI96_8_PAD_OR_PST.

This patch contains the following fixes to the Alsa DBRI driver:
- Remove 2.6.13 build warning on the prom_getproperty() call.
- Rework command synchronization: send a sequence number with D_WAIT,
and check it in the completion interrupt.
Move synchronization delays from _cmdsend() to _cmdlock() allowing the
CPU to do other usefull things while the DBRI is processing the
commands.
- Fix first argument of printk() calls.
- Enable burst transfers for DBRI. Original 2.4 patch from Krzysztof
Helt
- Make dbri_debug module parameter writable from sysfs. Remove obsolete
write access to the /proc debug file.
- Replace udelay() with msleep_interruptible() where possible.

A thread appeared on the LKML. This patch implements the fix.
Question:
in sysfs, /sys/bus/*/drivers lists the driver names, with their exported .name (eg. '.name = 'EMU10K1_Audigy'' in the module code, from now on 'driver name'). In /sys/modules, the kernel modules are listed with their module name, eg. snd_emu10k1. However, it seems to me that in sysfs, there is no way in particular to tell, which module has which .name. That is, that snd_emu10k1 is EMU10K1_Audigy and vice versa.
I wonder whether it wouldn't be possible to add a symlink to the particular module from the driver, and/or from the module to the driver, so the list of devices handled by the module and the module name would be accessible. This way, I would know which driver name corresponds to which module name and vice versa.
Answer:
For PCI drivers, just add the line:
.owner = THIS_MODULE,
to their struct pci_driver definition and you will get the symlink
created for you.

This afternoon Alan Stern submitted a patch to remove the URB_ASYNC_UNLINK
flag from the Linux kernel. Mr. Stern explained, "This flag is a relic
from an earlier, less-well-designed system. For over a year it hasn't
been used for anything other than printing warning messages."
An anonymous spokesman for the Linux kernel development community
commented, "This is exactly the sort of thing we see happening all the
time. As the kernel evolves, support for old techniques and old code can
be jettisoned and replaced by newer, better approaches. Proprietary
operating systems do not have the freedom or flexibility to change so
quickly."
Mr. Stern, a staff member at Harvard University's Rowland Institute who
works on Linux only as a hobby, noted that the patch (labelled as548) did
not update two files, keyspan.c and option.c, in the USB drivers' "serial"
subdirectory. "Those files need more extensive changes," he remarked.
"They examine the status field of several URBs at times when they're not
supposed to. That will need to be fixed before the URB_ASYNC_UNLINK flag
is removed."
Greg Kroah-Hartman, the kernel maintainer responsible for overseeing all
of Linux's USB drivers, did not respond to our inquiries or return our
calls. His only comment was "Applied, thanks."

resulting in funny behaviour. (Soundcarts get selectable if other
soundcards are selected).

The HP nx6110 laptop needs to have Headphone Jack Sense enabled so
that the internal speakers will be turned off when headphones are
plugged in.
Also ac97_quirk=hp_only is needed to make a single Master volume in
the mixer instead of separate volumes for internal speakers and
headphones, which just confuses the user.

We always had to use double buffering when capturing, and when playback
data for one URB crosses a buffer boundary. The latter would make hwptr
updates less precise because the double-buffered data is read from the
buffer much earlier than the other data is read by the host controller.
Double-buffering all data allows to update hwptr immediately after the
data was copied to the USB buffer(s), which has the additional benefit
of avoiding the latency imposed by the host controller's delay of up to
one frame when interrupting.

When preparing capture URBs, we don't need to stop when we cross a
period boundary because we now never handle more than one millisecond of
data per URB anyway.
When handling captured data, use an extra flag to call
snd_pcm_period_elapsed() no more than once. This allows us to move the
period boundary checking code before the copying of the data which
avoids a second locking of the substream's lock.

When capturing audio data, we do not know beforehand how many samples
the device sends per frame, so we have to use URBs that are as short as
possible to make sure that we can handle period boundaries without any
additional latencies.
Furthermore, the total count of URBs submitted doesn't matter when
capturing, so we can just use the maximum number.

'I would like to know what people think of the following patch. It
allows for a codec on an AC97 bus to be shared with other drivers which
are completely unrelated to audio. It registers a new bus type, and
whenever a codec instance is created then a device for it is also
registered with the driver model using that bus type. This allows, for
example, to use the extra features of the UCB1400 like the touchscreen
interface and the additional GPIOs and ADCs available on that chip for
battery monitoring. I have a working UCB1400 touchscreen driver here
that simply registers with the driver model happily working alongside
with audio features using this.'

This patch changes .iface to SNDRV_CTL_ELEM_IFACE_MIXER whre _PCM or
_HWDEP was used in controls that are not associated with a specific PCM
(sub)stream or hwdep device, and changes some controls that got
inconsitent .iface values due to copy+paste errors. Furthermore, it
makes sure that all control that do use _PCM or _HWDEP use the correct
number in the .device field.

`gcc -W' likes to complain if the static keyword is not at the beginning of
the declaration. This patch fixes all remaining occurrences of "inline
static" up with "static inline" in the entire kernel tree (140 occurrences in
47 files).
While making this change I came across a few lines with trailing whitespace
that I also fixed up, I have also added or removed a blank line or two here
and there, but there are no functional changes in the patch.

The dynamic pci id logic has been bothering me for a while, and now that
I started to look into how to move some of this to the driver core, I
thought it was time to clean it all up.
It ends up making the code smaller, and easier to follow, and fixes a
few bugs at the same time (dynamic ids were not being matched
everywhere, and so could be missed on some call paths for new devices,
semaphore not needed to be grabbed when adding a new id and calling the
driver core, etc.)
I also renamed the function pci_match_device() to pci_match_id() as
that's what it really does.

This patch removes CONFIG_PMAC_PBOOK (PowerBook support). This is now
split into CONFIG_PMAC_MEDIABAY for the actual hotswap bay that some
powerbooks have, CONFIG_PM for power management related code, and just left
out of any CONFIG_* option for some generally useful stuff that can be used
on non-laptops as well.

SOUND_PRIME (for OSS) is a tristate.
This doesn't make much sense if most users are checking for
SOUND_PRIME!=0.
This patch changes the semantics of SOUND_PRIME to being a limit for all
OSS modules, IOW: SOUND_PRIME=m does now say that all OSS drivers can
only be modular.
As a side effect, since SOUND_PRIME already depends on SOUND, there's no
longer a reason for drivers depending on SOUND_PRIME to additionally
depend on SOUND.

This patch creates a new kstrdup library function and changes the "local"
implementations in several places to use this function.
Most of the changes come from the sound and net subsystems. The sound part
had already been acknowledged by Takashi Iwai and the net part by David S.
Miller.
I left UML alone for now because I would need more time to read the code
carefully before making changes there.

more models with ALC codecs: ALC880 ASUS, Uniwill, FSC1734, generic 6-stack,
and ALC260 HP. Tests with the real hardwares are appreciated.
The codec patch is cleaned up: The preset configuration of codecs are
stored in the table and copied to the spec instance.

The last addition of bound volume is fixed now to handle correctly
the bound 'mute switches'. The analog loopback should work better.

Feed front signals to all surround channels if no data is given
for surround channels.
It seems that CLFE works as expected (only center outputs) even if
connected from the front line - at least on my test system.
If this change causes problems on other system (e.g. only the left
channel is transferred to the center channel), please let me know...

Background: The card/chipset supports an external MIDI interrupt. By
default, this interrupt isn't used (because the isapnp mechanism chooses a
configuration without an assigned interrupt). If the user wishes to
explicitly select an interrupt via the mpu_irq parameter for such a
configured device, it doesn't work: The driver always shows:
isapnp MPU: port=0x330, irq=-1
(note the 'irq=-1')
Problem: The driver only allows to set the irq if pnp_irq_valid returns
true for this particular pnp device. This, however, is only true if an
interrupt has already been assigned (pnp_valid_irq returns true if the flag
IORESOURCE_IRQ is set and IORESOURCE_UNSET is not set). If no interrupt
has been assigned so far, IORESOURCE_UNSET is set and pnp_irq_valid returns
false, thereby inhibiting the selection of a valid irq.
Solution: Don't check for a valid (= already assigned) irq at the point of
calling pnp_resource_change.
Tested successfully on Linux 2.6.11.

Without this patch, some usb kobjects, which are parents to the usx2y's
kobjects can be freed before the usx2y's. This led to an oops in
get_kobj_path_length() and a dead keyboard, when the usx2y's kobjects
were freed. The patch ensures the correct sequence. Tested ok on
kernel 2.6.12-rc2.

alsamixer says 'SPDIF Out [Off]' but no analog sound comes from the speakers.
This covers any bug reports that said things like
'mixer fails to remember analog output on, when the system is rebooted.'

When a USB packet boundary falls exactly on a buffer boundary, hwptr
remains at the end of the buffer which causes an overflow in the next
iteration and triggers double buffering although the next packet would
actually be contiguous.
This patch ensures that hwptr is always smaller than buffer_size.

This patch changes the Intel HD Audio device driver to include
the support of HD Audio device embedded in ATI south bridge
IXP450. Because the design of ATI chipset follows intel HD Audio
specification 1.0, the programming method is the same as that
of intel HD Audio device exception one minor change which requires
to enable snoop for DMA transport. There are 3 changes that have been
made to hda_intel.c file.
1. Added device ID for ATI HD Audio device;
2. Increase maximum CODEC supported to 4;
3. Enable snoop during the driver initialization.

Add initial SigmaTel codec support for 9200 and 922x. Note that
this hda patch relies on the configuration default registers to
be set correctly (normally by BIOS/firmware) in order for it to
set up pin widgets properly. There's a test switch in the patch
so it will work with the SigmaTel reference boards that are usually
plugged into a system that doesn't set the configuration default
registers. It supports 2 channel analog out and line/mic in. I
plan to add >2 channel support and spdif support shortly.

The handling of shared surround/clfe output jacks with line/mic-in
on some AC97 codecs is improved.
Instead of 'Line-In As Surround' or 'Mic As Center/LFE' switch, two
new enum controls are introduced: 'Channel Mode' and 'Surround Jack Mode'.
The formar changes the current output mode among 2, 4 and 6-channels.
The latter controls whether the jacks are shared or independent.

Add support for full sample rate conversion capabilities of DXS
channels present in VIA VT8233/5/7 controllers:
- any sample rate in the 8000 ... 48000 Hz range is supported even if
the AC'97 codec supports only 48000 Hz output;
- different DXS channels can use different sample rates at the same
time (the controller performs required sample rate conversion and
mixing in hardware).

Although we can set 44100 as the output rate, the SPDIF can do it, but the Analog output cannot.
The SPDIF has the bug, whereby the Left channel arrives one sample late, so although we don't do any resampling,
it is not good for AC3 non-audio output.

The patch makes cm9880 to choose multi-channel jacks automatically.
1. I found the current code has basic_init, which already includes
necessary controls for 6-stack initialization, so I don't need
another model.
2. I add a new model 'auto' to let the driver find a. if there are
option real panel/front panel, b. the jacks to be used for multichannel.
Because the jack color are based on MS's channel sequence, so the 'auto'
model will pick the same jacks for multichannel MS uses. I did this to
hope to minimize users questions. These code can also be applied to other
codecs but I don't have any to test.

With some intel based ac97 modems codec access semaphore is not cleared
after 0x54 AC97 register (GPIO_STATUS) reads. This may causes problems
with newly applied modem mixer (Off-hook switch) and in other cases.

The g5 support code broke some earlier models unfortunately as those bail
out early from the detect function, before the point where I added the code
to locate the PCI device for use with DMA allocations.
This patch fixes it.

This patch adds dummy gameport_register_port, gameport_unregister_port
and gameport_set_phys functions to gameport.h for the case when a driver
can't use gameport.
This fixes the compilation of some OSS drivers with GAMEPORT=n without
the need to #if inside every single driver.
This patch also removes the non-working and now obsolete SOUND_GAMEPORT.
This patch is also an alternative solution for ALSA drivers with similar
problems (but #if's inside the drivers might have the advantage of
saving some more bytes of gameport is not available).
The only user-visible change is that for GAMEPORT=m the affected OSS
drivers are now allowed to be built statically (but they won't have
gameport support).

Trying software suspend on my workstation makes it crash on resume. The
problem is that via82xx marks the chip_init function as _devinit, but calls
it on resume as well.

My newer iMac mini driver doesn't build with verbose debug enabled.
This fixes it, and removes an erroneous error printk (since it's normal
on some machine to not find some gpios on the "first try").

Ben's patch that shutdowns master switch and restores it after resume
("pmac: Improve sleep code of tumbler driver") isn't enough here on an
iBook (snapper chip).
The master switch is correctly saved and restored, but somehow
tumbler_put_master_volume() gets called just after
tumbler_set_master_volume() and sets mix->master_vol[*] to 0. So, on
resuming, the master switch is reenabled, but the volume is set to 0.
Here's a patch that also saves and restores master_vol.

This patch applies on top of my previous g5 related sound patches and adds
support for the Mac Mini to the PowerMac Alsa driver.
However, I haven't found any kind of HW support for volume control on this
machine. If it exist, it's well hidden. That means that you probably want
to make sure you use software with the ability to do soft volume control,
or use Alsa 0.9 pre-release with the softvol plugin.

This patch fixes a couple more issues with the management of the GPIOs
dealing with headphone and line out mute on the G5. It should fix the
remaining problems of people not getting any sound out of the headphone
jack.

This patch hacks the current PowerMac Alsa driver to add some basic support
of analog sound output to some desktop G5s. It has severe limitations
though:
- Only 44100Khz 16 bits
- Only work on G5 models using a TAS3004 analog code, that is early
single CPU desktops and all dual CPU desktops at this date, but none
of the more recent ones like iMac G5.
- It does analog only, no digital/SPDIF support at all, no native
AC3 support
Better support would require a complete rewrite of the driver (which I am
working on, but don't hold your breath), to properly support the diversity
of apple sound HW setup, including dual codecs, several i2s busses, all the
new codecs used in the new machines, proper clock switching with digital,
etc etc etc...
This patch applies on top of the other PowerMac sound patches I posted in
the past couple of days (new powerbook support and sleep fixes).
Note: This is a FAQ entry for PowerMac sound support with TI codecs: They
have a feature called "DRC" which is automatically enabled for the internal
speaker (at least when auto mute control is enabled) which will cause your
sound to fade out to nothing after half a second of playback if you don't
set a proper "DRC Range" in the mixer. So if you have a problem like that,
check alsamixer and raise your DRC Range to something reasonable.
Note2: This patch will also add auto-mute of the speaker when line-out jack
is used on some earlier desktop G4s (and on the G5) in addition to the
headphone jack. If that behaviour isn't what you want, just disable
auto-muting and use the manual mute controls in alsamixer.

This patch improves the behaviour of the "tumbler/snapper" driver used on
newer PowerMacs during sleep. It properly set the HW mutes to shut down
amplifiers and does an analog shutdown of the codec. That might improve
power consumption during sleep on a number of machines.

This patch hacks the current Alsa snd-powermac driver to add support for
recent machine models with the tas3004 chip, that is basically new laptop
models. The Mac Mini is _NOT_ yet supported by this patch (soon soon ...).
The G5s (iMac or Desktop) will need the rewritten sound driver on which
I'm working on (I _might_ get a hack for analog only on some G5s on the
current driver, but no promise).

Initial git repository build. I'm not bothering with the full history,
even though we have it. We can create a separate "historical" git
archive of that later if we want to, and in the meantime it's about
3.2GB when imported into git - space that would just make the early
git days unnecessarily complicated, when we don't have a lot of good
infrastructure for it.
