mm: avoid unnecessary page fault retires on shared memory types
I observed that for each of the shared file-backed page faults, we're very likely to retry one more time for the 1st write fault upon no page. It's because we'll need to release the mmap lock for dirty rate limit purpose with balance_dirty_pages_ratelimited() (in fault_dirty_shared_page()). Then after that throttling we return VM_FAULT_RETRY. We did that probably because VM_FAULT_RETRY is the only way we can return to the fault handler at that time telling it we've released the mmap lock. However that's not ideal because it's very likely the fault does not need to be retried at all since the pgtable was well installed before the throttling, so the next continuous fault (including taking mmap read lock, walk the pgtable, etc.) could be in most cases unnecessary. It's not only slowing down page faults for shared file-backed, but also add more mmap lock contention which is in most cases not needed at all. To observe this, one could try to write to some shmem page and look at "pgfault" value in /proc/vmstat, then we should expect 2 counts for each shmem write simply because we retried, and vm event "pgfault" will capture that. To make it more efficient, add a new VM_FAULT_COMPLETED return code just to show that we've completed the whole fault and released the lock. It's also a hint that we should very possibly not need another fault immediately on this page because we've just completed it. This patch provides a ~12% perf boost on my aarch64 test VM with a simple program sequentially dirtying 400MB shmem file being mmap()ed and these are the time it needs: Before: 650.980 ms (+-1.94%) After: 569.396 ms (+-1.38%) I believe it could help more than that. We need some special care on GUP and the s390 pgfault handler (for gmap code before returning from pgfault), the rest changes in the page fault handlers should be relatively straightforward. Another thing to mention is that mm_account_fault() does take this new fault as a generic fault to be accounted, unlike VM_FAULT_RETRY. I explicitly didn't touch hmm_vma_fault() and break_ksm() because they do not handle VM_FAULT_RETRY even with existing code, so I'm literally keeping them as-is. Cleanups (and one fix) around struct mount handling.
The fix is usermode_driver.c one - once you've done kern_mount(), you must kern_unmount(); simple mntput() will end up with a leak. Several failure exits in there messed up that way... TTY / Serial driver changes for 5.19-rc1
Here is the big set of tty and serial driver updates for 5.19-rc1. Lots of tiny cleanups in here, the major stuff is: - termbit cleanups and unification by Ilpo. A much needed change that goes a long way to making things simpler for all of the different arches - tty documentation cleanups and movements to their own place in the documentation tree - old tty driver cleanups and fixes from Jiri to bring some existing drivers into the modern world - RS485 cleanups and unifications to make it easier for individual drivers to support this mode instead of having to duplicate logic in each driver - Lots of 8250 driver updates and additions - new device id additions - n_gsm continued fixes and cleanups - other minor serial driver updates and cleanups All of these have been in linux-next for weeks with no reported issues. arch/alpha: replace cpumask_weight with cpumask_empty where appropriate
common_shutdown_1() calls cpumask_weight() to check if any bit of a given cpumask is set. We can do it more efficiently with cpumask_empty() because cpumask_empty() stops traversing the cpumask as soon as it finds first set bit, while cpumask_weight() counts all bits unconditionally. Yang Shi has improved the behaviour of khugepaged collapsing of readonly
file-backed transparent hugepages. Johannes Weiner has arranged for zswap memory use to be tracked and managed on a per-cgroup basis. Munchun Song adds a /proc knob ("hugetlb_optimize_vmemmap") for runtime enablement of the recent huge page vmemmap optimization feature. Baolin Wang contributes a series to fix some issues around hugetlb pagetable invalidation. Zhenwei Pi has fixed some interactions between hwpoisoned pages and virtualization. Tong Tiangen has enabled the use of the presently x86-only page_table_check debugging feature on arm64 and riscv. David Vernet has done some fixup work on the memcg selftests. Peter Xu has taught userfaultfd to handle write protection faults against shmem- and hugetlbfs-backed files. More DAMON development from SeongJae Park - adding online tuning of the feature and support for monitoring of fixed virtual address ranges. Also easier discovery of which monitoring operations are available. Nadav Amit has done some optimization of TLB flushing during mprotect(). Neil Brown continues to labor away at improving our swap-over-NFS support. David Hildenbrand has some fixes to anon page COWing versus get_user_pages(). Peng Liu fixed some errors in the core hugetlb code. Joao Martins has reduced the amount of memory consumed by device-dax's compound devmaps. Some cleanups of the arch-specific pagemap code from Anshuman Khandual. Muchun Song has found and fixed some errors in the TLB flushing of transparent hugepages. Roman Gushchin has done more work on the memcg selftests. And, of course, many smaller fixes and cleanups. Networking changes for 5.19.
Core ---- - Support TCPv6 segmentation offload with super-segments larger than 64k bytes using the IPv6 Jumbogram extension header (AKA BIG TCP). - Generalize skb freeing deferral to per-cpu lists, instead of per-socket lists. - Add a netdev statistic for packets dropped due to L2 address mismatch (rx_otherhost_dropped). - Continue work annotating skb drop reasons. - Accept alternative netdev names (ALT_IFNAME) in more netlink requests. - Add VLAN support for AF_PACKET SOCK_RAW GSO. - Allow receiving skb mark from the socket as a cmsg. - Enable memcg accounting for veth queues, sysctl tables and IPv6. BPF --- - Add libbpf support for User Statically-Defined Tracing (USDTs). - Speed up symbol resolution for kprobes multi-link attachments. - Support storing typed pointers to referenced and unreferenced objects in BPF maps. - Add support for BPF link iterator. - Introduce access to remote CPU map elements in BPF per-cpu map. - Allow middle-of-the-road settings for the kernel.unprivileged_bpf_disabled sysctl. - Implement basic types of dynamic pointers e.g. to allow for dynamically sized ringbuf reservations without extra memory copies. Protocols --------- - Retire port only listening_hash table, add a second bind table hashed by port and address. Avoid linear list walk when binding to very popular ports (e.g. 443). - Add bridge FDB bulk flush filtering support allowing user space to remove all FDB entries matching a condition. - Introduce accept_unsolicited_na sysctl for IPv6 to implement router-side changes for RFC9131. - Support for MPTCP path manager in user space. - Add MPTCP support for fallback to regular TCP for connections that have never connected additional subflows or transmitted out-of-sequence data (partial support for RFC8684 fallback). - Avoid races in MPTCP-level window tracking, stabilize and improve throughput. - Support lockless operation of GRE tunnels with seq numbers enabled. - WiFi support for host based BSS color collision detection. - Add support for SO_TXTIME/SCM_TXTIME on CAN sockets. - Support transmission w/o flow control in CAN ISOTP (ISO 15765-2). - Support zero-copy Tx with TLS 1.2 crypto offload (sendfile). - Allow matching on the number of VLAN tags via tc-flower. - Add tracepoint for tcp_set_ca_state(). alpha: define get_cycles macro for arch-override
Alpha defines a get_cycles() function, but it does not do the usual `#define get_cycles get_cycles` dance, making it impossible for generic code to see if an arch-specific function was defined. While the get_cycles() ifdef is not currently used, the following timekeeping patch in this series will depend on the macro existing (or not existing) when defining random_get_entropy(). fork: Generalize PF_IO_WORKER handling
Add fn and fn_arg members into struct kernel_clone_args and test for them in copy_thread (instead of testing for PF_KTHREAD | PF_IO_WORKER). This allows any task that wants to be a user space task that only runs in kernel mode to use this functionality. The code on x86 is an exception and still retains a PF_KTHREAD test because x86 unlikely everything else handles kthreads slightly differently than user space tasks that start with a function. The functions that created tasks that start with a function have been updated to set ".fn" and ".fn_arg" instead of ".stack" and ".stack_size". These functions are fork_idle(), create_io_thread(), kernel_thread(), and user_mode_thread(). Link: https://lkml.kernel.org/r/20220506141512.516114-4-ebiederm@xmission.com Signed-off-by: "Eric W. fork: Pass struct kernel_clone_args into copy_thread
With io_uring we have started supporting tasks that are for most purposes user space tasks that exclusively run code in kernel mode. The kernel task that exec's init and tasks that exec user mode helpers are also user mode tasks that just run kernel code until they call kernel execve. termbits: Convert octal defines to hex
Many archs have termbits.h as octal numbers. It makes hard for humans to parse the magnitude of large numbers correctly and to compare with hex ones of the same define. Convert octal values to hex. First step is an automated conversion with: for i in $(git ls-files | grep 'termbits\.h'); do awk --non-decimal-data '/^#define\s+[A-Z][A-Z0-9]*\s+0[0-9]/ { l=int(((length($3) - 1) * 3 + 3) / 4); repl = sprintf("0x%0" l "x", $3); print gensub(/[^[:blank:]]+/, repl, 3); next} {print}' $i > $i~; mv $i~ $i; done On top of that, some manual processing on alignment and number of zeros. ptrace: Cleanups for v5.18
This set of changes removes tracehook.h, moves modification of all of the ptrace fields inside of siglock to remove races, adds a missing permission check to ptrace.c The removal of tracehook.h is quite significant as it has been a major source of confusion in recent years. Much of that confusion was around task_work and TIF_NOTIFY_SIGNAL (which I have now decoupled making the semantics clearer). For people who don't know tracehook.h is a vestiage of an attempt to implement uprobes like functionality that was never fully merged, and was later superseeded by uprobes when uprobes was merged. mm: madvise: MADV_DONTNEED_LOCKED
MADV_DONTNEED historically rejects mlocked ranges, but with MLOCK_ONFAULT and MCL_ONFAULT allowing to mlock without populating, there are valid use cases for depopulating locked ranges as well. Users mlock memory to protect secrets. There are allocators for secure buffers that want in-use memory generally mlocked, but cleared and invalidated memory to give up the physical pages. This could be done with explicit munlock -> mlock calls on free -> alloc of course, but that adds two unnecessary syscalls, heavy mmap_sem write locks, vma splits and re-merges - only to get rid of the backing pages. Users also mlockall(MCL_ONFAULT) to suppress sustained paging, but are okay with on-demand initial population. It seems valid to selectively free some memory during the lifetime of such a process, without having to mess with its overall policy. Why add a separate flag? Isn't this a pretty niche usecase? - MADV_DONTNEED has been bailing on locked vmas forever. It's at least conceivable that someone, somewhere is relying on mlock to protect data from perhaps broader invalidation calls. Changing this behavior now could lead to quiet data corruption. - It also clarifies expectations around MADV_FREE and maybe MADV_REMOVE. It avoids the situation where one quietly behaves different than the others. MADV_FREE_LOCKED can be added later. - The combination of mlock() and madvise() in the first place is probably niche. But where it happens, I'd say that dropping pages from a locked region once they don't contain secrets or won't page anymore is much saner than relying on mlock to protect memory from speculative or errant invalidation calls. It's just that we can't change the default behavior because of the two previous points. Given that, an explicit new flag seems to make the most sense. Networking changes for 5.18.
Core ---- - Introduce XDP multi-buffer support, allowing the use of XDP with jumbo frame MTUs and combination with Rx coalescing offloads (LRO). - Speed up netns dismantling (5x) and lower the memory cost a little. Remove unnecessary per-netns sockets. Scope some lists to a netns. Cut down RCU syncing. Use batch methods. Allow netdev registration to complete out of order. - Support distinguishing timestamp types (ingress vs egress) and maintaining them across packet scrubbing points (e.g. redirect). - Continue the work of annotating packet drop reasons throughout the stack. - Switch netdev error counters from an atomic to dynamically allocated per-CPU counters. - Rework a few preempt_disable(), local_irq_save() and busy waiting sections problematic on PREEMPT_RT. - Extend the ref_tracker to allow catching use-after-free bugs. BPF --- - Introduce "packing allocator" for BPF JIT images. JITed code is marked read only, and used to be allocated at page granularity. Custom allocator allows for more efficient memory use, lower iTLB pressure and prevents identity mapping huge pages from getting split. - Make use of BTF type annotations (e.g. __user, __percpu) to enforce the correct probe read access method, add appropriate helpers. - Convert the BPF preload to use light skeleton and drop the user-mode-driver dependency. - Allow XDP BPF_PROG_RUN test infra to send real packets, enabling its use as a packet generator. - Allow local storage memory to be allocated with GFP_KERNEL if called from a hook allowed to sleep. - Introduce fprobe (multi kprobe) to speed up mass attachment (arch bits to come later). - Add unstable conntrack lookup helpers for BPF by using the BPF kfunc infra. - Allow cgroup BPF progs to return custom errors to user space. - Add support for AF_UNIX iterator batching. - Allow iterator programs to use sleepable helpers. - Support JIT of add, and, or, xor and xchg atomic ops on arm64. - Add BTFGen support to bpftool which allows to use CO-RE in kernels without BTF info. - Large number of libbpf API improvements, cleanups and deprecations. Protocols --------- - Micro-optimize UDPv6 Tx, gaining up to 5% in test on dummy netdev. - Adjust TSO packet sizes based on min_rtt, allowing very low latency links (data centers) to always send full-sized TSO super-frames. - Make IPv6 flow label changes (AKA hash rethink) more configurable, via sysctl and setsockopt. Distinguish between server and client behavior. - VxLAN support to "collect metadata" devices to terminate only configured VNIs. This is similar to VLAN filtering in the bridge. - Support inserting IPv6 IOAM information to a fraction of frames. - Add protocol attribute to IP addresses to allow identifying where given address comes from (kernel-generated, DHCP etc.) - Support setting socket and IPv6 options via cmsg on ping6 sockets. - Reject mis-use of ECN bits in IP headers as part of DSCP/TOS. Define dscp_t and stop taking ECN bits into account in fib-rules. - Add support for locked bridge ports (for 802.1X). - tun: support NAPI for packets received from batched XDP buffs, doubling the performance in some scenarios. - IPv6 extension header handling in Open vSwitch. - Support IPv6 control message load balancing in bonding, prevent neighbor solicitation and advertisement from using the wrong port. Support NS/NA monitor selection similar to existing ARP monitor. - SMC - improve performance with TCP_CORK and sendfile() - support auto-corking - support TCP_NODELAY - MCTP (Management Component Transport Protocol) - add user space tag control interface - I2C binding driver (as specified by DMTF DSP0237) - Multi-BSSID beacon handling in AP mode for WiFi. - Bluetooth: - handle MSFT Monitor Device Event - add MGMT Adv Monitor Device Found/Lost events - Multi-Path TCP: - add support for the SO_SNDTIMEO socket option - lots of selftest cleanups and improvements - Increase the max PDU size in CAN ISOTP to 64 kB. Driver API ---------- - Add HW counters for SW netdevs, a mechanism for devices which offload packet forwarding to report packet statistics back to software interfaces such as tunnels. - Select the default NIC queue count as a fraction of number of physical CPU cores, instead of hard-coding to 8. - Expose devlink instance locks to drivers. Allow device layer of drivers to use that lock directly instead of creating their own which always runs into ordering issues in devlink callbacks. - Add header/data split indication to guide user space enabling of TCP zero-copy Rx. - Allow configuring completion queue event size. - Refactor page_pool to enable fragmenting after allocation. - Add allocation and page reuse statistics to page_pool. - Improve Multiple Spanning Trees support in the bridge to allow reuse of topologies across VLANs, saving HW resources in switches. - DSA (Distributed Switch Architecture): - replay and offload of host VLAN entries - offload of static and local FDB entries on LAG interfaces - FDB isolation and unicast filtering New hardware / drivers ---------------------- - Ethernet: - LAN937x T1 PHYs - Davicom DM9051 SPI NIC driver - Realtek RTL8367S, RTL8367RB-VB switch and MDIO - Microchip ksz8563 switches - Netronome NFP3800 SmartNICs - Fungible SmartNICs - MediaTek MT8195 switches - WiFi: - mt76: MediaTek mt7916 - mt76: MediaTek mt7921u USB adapters - brcmfmac: Broadcom BCM43454/6 - Mobile: - iosm: Intel M.2 7360 WWAN card Drivers ------- - Convert many drivers to the new phylink API built for split PCS designs but also simplifying other cases. - Intel Ethernet NICs: - add TTY for GNSS module for E810T device - improve AF_XDP performance - GTP-C and GTP-U filter offload - QinQ VLAN support - Mellanox Ethernet NICs (mlx5): - support xdp->data_meta - multi-buffer XDP - offload tc push_eth and pop_eth actions - Netronome Ethernet NICs (nfp): - flow-independent tc action hardware offload (police / meter) - AF_XDP - Other Ethernet NICs: - at803x: fiber and SFP support - xgmac: mdio: preamble suppression and custom MDC frequencies - r8169: enable ASPM L1.2 if system vendor flags it as safe - macb/gem: ZynqMP SGMII - hns3: add TX push mode - dpaa2-eth: software TSO - lan743x: multi-queue, mdio, SGMII, PTP - axienet: NAPI and GRO support - Mellanox Ethernet switches (mlxsw): - source and dest IP address rewrites - RJ45 ports - Marvell Ethernet switches (prestera): - basic routing offload - multi-chain TC ACL offload - NXP embedded Ethernet switches (ocelot & felix): - PTP over UDP with the ocelot-8021q DSA tagging protocol - basic QoS classification on Felix DSA switch using dcbnl - port mirroring for ocelot switches - Microchip high-speed industrial Ethernet (sparx5): - offloading of bridge port flooding flags - PTP Hardware Clock - Other embedded switches: - lan966x: PTP Hardward Clock - qca8k: mdio read/write operations via crafted Ethernet packets - Qualcomm 802.11ax WiFi (ath11k): - add LDPC FEC type and 802.11ax High Efficiency data in radiotap - enable RX PPDU stats in monitor co-exist mode - Intel WiFi (iwlwifi): - UHB TAS enablement via BIOS - band disablement via BIOS - channel switch offload - 32 Rx AMPDU sessions in newer devices - MediaTek WiFi (mt76): - background radar detection - thermal management improvements on mt7915 - SAR support for more mt76 platforms - MBSSID and 6 GHz band on mt7915 - RealTek WiFi: - rtw89: AP mode - rtw89: 160 MHz channels and 6 GHz band - rtw89: hardware scan - Bluetooth: - mt7921s: wake on Bluetooth, SCO over I2S, wide-band-speed (WBS) - Microchip CAN (mcp251xfd): - multiple RX-FIFOs and runtime configurable RX/TX rings - internal PLL, runtime PM handling simplification - improve chip detection and error handling after wakeup Signed-off-by: Jakub Kicinski <kuba@kernel.org> -----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE----- iQIzBAABCAAdFiEE6jPA+I1ugmIBA4hXMUZtbf5SIrsFAmI7YBcACgkQMUZtbf5S IrveSBAAmSNJlUK6vPsnNzs7IhsZnfI/AUjm2TCLZnlhKttbpI4A/4Pohk33V7RS FGX7f8kjEfhUwrIiLDgeCnztNHRECrCmk6aZc/jLEvecmTauJ+f6kjShkDY/wix+ AkPHmrZnQeLPAEVuljDdV+sL6ik08+zQL7PazIYHsaSKKC0MGQptRwcri8PLRAKE KPBAhVhleq2rAZ/ntprSN52F4Af6rpFTrPIWuN8Bqdbc9dy5094LT0mpOOWYvgr3 /DLvvAPuLemwyIQkjWknVKBRUAQcmNPC+BY3J8K3LRaiNhekGqOFan46BfqP+k2J 6DWu0Qrp2yWt4BMOeEToZR5rA6v5suUAMIBu8PRZIDkINXQMlIxHfGjZyNm0rVfw 7edNri966yus9OdzwPa32MIG3oC6PnVAwYCJAjjBMNS8sSIkp7wgHLkgWN4UFe2H K/e6z8TLF4UQ+zFM0aGI5WZ+9QqWkTWEDF3R3OhdFpGrznna0gxmkOeV2YvtsgxY cbS0vV9Zj73o+bYzgBKJsw/dAjyLdXoHUGvus26VLQ78S/VGunVKtItwoxBAYmZo krW964qcC89YofzSi8RSKLHuEWtNWZbVm8YXr75u6jpr5GhMBu0CYefLs+BuZcxy dw8c69cGneVbGZmY2J3rBhDkchbuICl8vdUPatGrOJAoaFdYKuw= =ELpe -----END PGP SIGNATURE----- Merge tag 'net-next-5.18' of git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/netdev/net-next Pull networking updates from Jakub Kicinski: "The sprinkling of SPI drivers is because we added a new one and Mark sent us a SPI driver interface conversion pull request. asm-generic updates for 5.18
There are three sets of updates for 5.18 in the asm-generic tree: - The set_fs()/get_fs() infrastructure gets removed for good. This was already gone from all major architectures, but now we can finally remove it everywhere, which loses some particularly tricky and error-prone code. There is a small merge conflict against a parisc cleanup, the solution is to use their new version. - The nds32 architecture ends its tenure in the Linux kernel. The hardware is still used and the code is in reasonable shape, but the mainline port is not actively maintained any more, as all remaining users are thought to run vendor kernels that would never be updated to a future release. There are some obvious conflicts against changes to the removed files. - A series from Masahiro Yamada cleans up some of the uapi header files to pass the compile-time checks. -----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE----- iQIzBAABCgAdFiEEo6/YBQwIrVS28WGKmmx57+YAGNkFAmI69BsACgkQmmx57+YA GNn/zA//f4d5VTT0ThhRxRWTu9BdThGHoB8TUcY7iOhbsWu0X/913NItRC3UeWNl IdmisaXgVtirg1dcC2pWUmrcHdoWOCEGfK4+Zr2NhSWfuZDWvODHK9pGWk4WLnhe cQgUNBvIuuAMryGtrOBwHPO4TpfCyy2ioeVP36ZfcsWXdDxTrqfaq/56mk3sxIP6 sUTk1UEjut9NG4C9xIIvcSU50R3l6LryQE/H9kyTLtaSvfvTOvprcVYCq0GPmSzo DtQ1Wwa9zbJ+4EqoMiP5RrgQwWvOTg2iRByLU8ytwlX3e/SEF0uihvMv1FQbL8zG G8RhGUOKQSEhaBfc3lIkm8GpOVPh0uHzB6zhn7daVmAWtazRD2Nu59BMjipa+ims a8Z58iHH7jRAnKeEkVZqXKb1CEiUxaQx/IeVPzN4QlwMhDtwrI76LY7ZJ1zCqTGY ENG0yRLav1XselYBslOYXGtOEWcY5EZPWqLyWbp4P9vz2g0Fe0gZxoIOvPmNQc89 QnfXpCt7vm/DGkyO255myu08GOLeMkisVqUIzLDB9avlym5mri7T7vk9abBa2YyO CRpTL5gl1/qKPWuH1UI5mvhT+sbbBE2SUHSuy84btns39ZKKKynwCtdu+hSQkKLE h9pV30Gf1cLTD4JAE0RWlUgOmbBLVp34loTOexQj4MrLM1noOnw= =vtCN -----END PGP SIGNATURE----- Merge tag 'asm-generic-5.18' of git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/arnd/asm-generic Pull asm-generic updates from Arnd Bergmann: "There are three sets of updates for 5.18 in the asm-generic tree: - The set_fs()/get_fs() infrastructure gets removed for good. We need to use this function in common code, so define it for architectures and/or configrations that miss it. The result of pmd_pfn() will only be used if TRANSPARENT_HUGEPAGE is enabled, but a function or macro called pmd_pfn() must be defined, even on machines with two level page tables. a.out: Stop building a.out/osf1 support on alpha and m68k
There has been repeated discussion on removing a.out support, the most recent was[1]. Having read through a bunch of the discussion it looks like no one has see any reason why we need to keep a.out support. The m68k maintainer has even come out in favor of removing a.out support[2]. At a practical level with only two rarely used architectures building a.out support, it gets increasingly hard to test and to care about. Which means the code will almost certainly bit-rot. Let's see if anyone cares about a.out support on the last two architectures that build it, by disabling the build of the support in Kconfig. If anyone cares, this can be easily reverted, and we can then have a discussion about what it is going to take to support a.out binaries in the long term. Merge branch 'set_fs-4' of git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/arnd/asm-generic into asm-generic
Christoph Hellwig and a few others spent a huge effort on removing set_fs() from most of the important architectures, but about half the other architectures were never completed even though most of them don't actually use set_fs() at all. I did a patch for microblaze at some point, which turned out to be fairly generic, and now ported it to most other architectures, using new generic implementations of access_ok() and __{get,put}_kernel_nocheck(). Three architectures (sparc64, ia64, and sh) needed some extra work, which I also completed. * 'set_fs-4' of git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/arnd/asm-generic: uaccess: remove CONFIG_SET_FS ia64: remove CONFIG_SET_FS support sh: remove CONFIG_SET_FS support sparc64: remove CONFIG_SET_FS support lib/test_lockup: fix kernel pointer check for separate address spaces uaccess: generalize access_ok() uaccess: fix type mismatch warnings from access_ok() arm64: simplify access_ok() m68k: fix access_ok for coldfire MIPS: use simpler access_ok() MIPS: Handle address errors for accesses above CPU max virtual user address uaccess: add generic __{get,put}_kernel_nofault nios2: drop access_ok() check from __put_user() x86: use more conventional access_ok() definition x86: remove __range_not_ok() sparc64: add __{get,put}_kernel_nofault() nds32: fix access_ok() checks in get/put_user uaccess: fix nios2 and microblaze get_user_8() uaccess: fix integer overflow on access_ok() |

uaccess: remove CONFIG_SET_FS
There are no remaining callers of set_fs(), so CONFIG_SET_FS can be removed globally, along with the thread_info field and any references to it. This turns access_ok() into a cheaper check against TASK_SIZE_MAX. As CONFIG_SET_FS is now gone, drop all remaining references to set_fs()/get_fs(), mm_segment_t, user_addr_max() and uaccess_kernel(). uaccess: generalize access_ok()
There are many different ways that access_ok() is defined across architectures, but in the end, they all just compare against the user_addr_max() value or they accept anything. Provide one definition that works for most architectures, checking against TASK_SIZE_MAX for user processes or skipping the check inside of uaccess_kernel() sections. For architectures without CONFIG_SET_FS(), this should be the fastest check, as it comes down to a single comparison of a pointer against a compile-time constant, while the architecture specific versions tend to do something more complex for historic reasons or get something wrong. Type checking for __user annotations is handled inconsistently across architectures, but this is easily simplified as well by using an inline function that takes a 'const void __user *' argument. A handful of callers need an extra __user annotation for this. Some architectures had trick to use 33-bit or 65-bit arithmetic on the addresses to calculate the overflow, however this simpler version uses fewer registers, which means it can produce better object code in the end despite needing a second (statically predicted) branch. treewide: Replace zero-length arrays with flexible-array members
There is a regular need in the kernel to provide a way to declare having a dynamically sized set of trailing elements in a structure. lib/xor: make xor prototypes more friendly to compiler vectorization
Modern compilers are perfectly capable of extracting parallelism from the XOR routines, provided that the prototypes reflect the nature of the input accurately, in particular, the fact that the input vectors are expected not to overlap. This is not documented explicitly, but is implied by the interchangeability of the various C routines, some of which use temporary variables while others don't: this means that these routines only behave identically for non-overlapping inputs. So let's decorate these input vectors with the __restrict modifier, which informs the compiler that there is no overlap. While at it, make the input-only vectors pointer-to-const as well. Pull signal/exit/ptrace updates from Eric Biederman: "This set of changes deletes some dead code, makes a lot of cleanups which hopefully make the code easier to follow, and fixes bugs found along the way. The end-game which I have not yet reached yet is for fatal signals that generate coredumps to be short-circuit deliverable from complete_signal, for force_siginfo_to_task not to require changing userspace configured signal delivery state, and for the ptrace stops to always happen in locations where we can guarantee on all architectures that the all of the registers are saved and available on the stack. Removal of profile_task_ext, profile_munmap, and profile_handoff_task are the big successes for dead code removal this round. A bunch of small bug fixes are included, as most of the issues reported were small enough that they would not affect bisection so I simply added the fixes and did not fold the fixes into the changes they were fixing. There was a bug that broke coredumps piped to systemd-coredump. I dropped the change that caused that bug and replaced it entirely with something much more restrained. Unfortunately that required some rebasing. Some successes after this set of changes: There are few enough calls to do_exit to audit in a reasonable amount of time. The lifetime of struct kthread now matches the lifetime of struct task, and the pointer to struct kthread is no longer stored in set_child_tid. The flag SIGNAL_GROUP_COREDUMP is removed. The field group_exit_task is removed. Issues where task->exit_code was examined with signal->group_exit_code should been examined were fixed. rtc: Check return value from mc146818_get_time()
There are 4 users of mc146818_get_time() and none of them was checking the return value from this function. Change this. Print the appropriate warnings in callers of mc146818_get_time() instead of in the function mc146818_get_time() itself, in order not to add strings to rtc-mc146818-lib.c, which is kind of a library. The callers of alpha_rtc_read_time() and cmos_read_time() may use the contents of (struct rtc_time *) even when the functions return a failure code. Therefore, set the contents of (struct rtc_time *) to 0x00, which looks more sensible then 0xff and aligns with the (possibly stale?) comment in cmos_read_time: /* * If pm_trace abused the RTC for storage, set the timespec to 0, * which tells the caller that this RTC value is unusable. */ For consistency, do this in mc146818_get_time(). Note: hpet_rtc_interrupt() may call mc146818_get_time() many times a second. It is very unlikely, though, that the RTC suddenly stops working and mc146818_get_time() would consistently fail. Only compile-tested on alpha. exit: Add and use make_task_dead.
There are two big uses of do_exit. The first is it's design use to be the guts of the exit(2) system call. The second use is to terminate a task after something catastrophic has happened like a NULL pointer in kernel code. Add a function make_task_dead that is initialy exactly the same as do_exit to cover the cases where do_exit is called to handle catastrophic failure. In time this can probably be reduced to just a light wrapper around do_task_dead. For now keep it exactly the same so that there will be no behavioral differences introducing this new concept. Replace all of the uses of do_exit that use it for catastraphic task cleanup with make_task_dead to make it clear what the code is doing. As part of this rename rewind_stack_do_exit rewind_stack_and_make_dead. Signed-off-by: "Eric W. Biederman" <ebiederm@xmission.com> |

locking: Allow to include asm/spinlock_types.h from linux/spinlock_types_raw.h
The printk header file includes ratelimit_types.h for its __ratelimit() based usage. It is required for the static initializer used in printk_ratelimited(). It uses a raw_spinlock_t and includes the spinlock_types.h. PREEMPT_RT substitutes spinlock_t with a rtmutex based implementation and so its spinlock_t implmentation (provided by spinlock_rt.h) includes rtmutex.h and atomic.h which leads to recursive includes where defines are missing. By including only the raw_spinlock_t defines it avoids the atomic.h related includes at this stage. alpha: Snapshot thread flags
Some thread flags can be set remotely, and so even when IRQs are disabled, the flags can change under our feet. Generally this is unlikely to cause a problem in practice, but it is somewhat unsound, and KCSAN will legitimately warn that there is a data race. To avoid such issues, a snapshot of the flags has to be taken prior to using them. Some places already use READ_ONCE() for that, others do not. Convert them all to the new flag accessor helpers. memblock: use memblock_free for freeing virtual pointers

alpha: move __udiv_qrnnd library function to arch/alpha/lib/
We already had the implementation for __udiv_qrnnd (unsigned divide for multi-precision arithmetic) as part of the alpha math emulation code. But you can disable the math emulation code - even if you shouldn't - and then the MPI code that actually wants this functionality (and is needed by various crypto functions) will fail to build. So move the extended-precision divide code to be a regular library function, just like all the regular division code is. That way ie is available regardless of math-emulation. alpha: mark 'Jensen' platform as no longer broken
Ok, it almost certainly is still broken on actual hardware, but the
immediate reason for it having been marked BROKEN was a build error that
is fixed by just making sure the low-level IO header file is included
sufficiently early that the __EXTERN_INLINE hackery takes effect.
This was marked broken back in 2017 by commit
|
||
Linus Torvalds

alpha: make 'Jensen' IO functions build again
The Jensen IO functions are overly copmplicated because some of the IO addresses refer to special 'local IO' ports, and they get accessed differently. That then makes gcc not actually inline them, and since they were marked "extern inline" when included through the regular <asm/io.h> path, and then only marked "inline" when included from sys_jensen.c, you never necessarily got a body for the IO functions at all. The intent of the sys_jensen.c code is to actually get the non-inlined copy generated, so remove the 'inline' from the magic macro that is supposed to sort this all out. Also, do not mix 'extern inline' functions (that may or may not be inlined and will not generate a function body if they are not) with 'static inline' (that _will_ generate a function body when not inlined). Because gcc will complain about this situation: error: ‘jensen_bus_outb’ is static but used in inline function ‘jensen_outb’ which is not static because gcc basically doesn't know whether to generate a body for that static inline function or not for that call site. So make all of these use that __EXTERN_INLINE marker. Gcc will generally not inline these things on use, and then generate the function body out-of-line in sys_jensen.c. This makes the core IO functions build for the alpha Jensen config. Not that the rest then builds, because it turns out Jensen also doesn't enable PCI, which then makes other drievrs very unhappy, but that's a separate issue. asm-generic changes for 5.15
The main content for 5.15 is a series that cleans up the handling of strncpy_from_user() and strnlen_user(), removing a lot of slightly incorrect versions of these in favor of the lib/strn*.c helpers that implement these correctly and more efficiently. The only architectures that retain a private version now are mips, ia64, um and parisc. I had offered to convert those at all, but Thomas Bogendoerfer wanted to keep the mips version for the moment until he had a chance to do regression testing. The branch also contains two patches for bitops and for ffs(). Merge branch 'exit-cleanups-for-v5.15' of git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/ebiederm/user-namespace
Pull exit cleanups from Eric Biederman: "In preparation of doing something about PTRACE_EVENT_EXIT I have started cleaning up various pieces of code related to do_exit. Most of that code I did not manage to get tested and reviewed before the merge window opened but a handful of very useful cleanups are ready to be merged. The first change is simply the removal of the bdflush system call. The code has now been disabled long enough that even the oldest userspace working userspace setups anyone can find to test are fine with the bdflush system call being removed. Changing m68k fsp040_die to use force_sigsegv(SIGSEGV) instead of calling do_exit directly is interesting only in that it is nearly the most difficult of the incorrect uses of do_exit to remove. The change to the seccomp code to simply send a signal instead of calling do_coredump directly is a very nice little cleanup made possible by realizing the existing signal sending helpers were missing a little bit of functionality that is easy to provide" * 'exit-cleanups-for-v5.15' of git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/ebiederm/user-namespace: signal/seccomp: Dump core when there is only one live thread signal/seccomp: Refactor seccomp signal and coredump generation signal/m68k: Use force_sigsegv(SIGSEGV) in fpsp040_die exit/bdflush: Remove the deprecated bdflush system call |

alpha: return error code from alpha_pci_map_sg()
The .map_sg() op now expects an error code instead of zero on failure. pci_map_single_1() can fail for different reasons, but since the only supported type of error return is DMA_MAPPING_ERROR, we coalesce those errors into EIO. ENOMEM is returned when no page tables can be allocated. sock: allow reading and changing sk_userlocks with setsockopt
SOCK_SNDBUF_LOCK and SOCK_RCVBUF_LOCK flags disable automatic socket buffers adjustment done by kernel (see tcp_fixup_rcvbuf() and tcp_sndbuf_expand()). If we've just created a new socket this adjustment is enabled on it, but if one changes the socket buffer size by setsockopt(SO_{SND,RCV}BUF*) it becomes disabled. CRIU needs to call setsockopt(SO_{SND,RCV}BUF*) on each socket on restore as it first needs to increase buffer sizes for packet queues restore and second it needs to restore back original buffer sizes. So after CRIU restore all sockets become non-auto-adjustable, which can decrease network performance of restored applications significantly. CRIU need to be able to restore sockets with enabled/disabled adjustment to the same state it was before dump, so let's add special setsockopt for it. Let's also export SOCK_SNDBUF_LOCK and SOCK_RCVBUF_LOCK flags to uAPI so that using these interface one can reenable automatic socket buffer adjustment on their sockets.
