mm: remove kern_addr_valid() completely
Most architectures (except arm64/x86/sparc) simply return 1 for kern_addr_valid(), which is only used in read_kcore(), and it calls copy_from_kernel_nofault() which could check whether the address is a valid kernel address. So as there is no need for kern_addr_valid(), let's remove it. hugetlb: simplify hugetlb handling in follow_page_mask
During discussions of this series [1], it was suggested that hugetlb handling code in follow_page_mask could be simplified. At the beginning of follow_page_mask, there currently is a call to follow_huge_addr which 'may' handle hugetlb pages. ia64 is the only architecture which provides a follow_huge_addr routine that does not return error. Instead, at each level of the page table a check is made for a hugetlb entry. If a hugetlb entry is found, a call to a routine associated with that entry is made. Currently, there are two checks for hugetlb entries at each page table level. The first check is of the form: if (p?d_huge()) page = follow_huge_p?d(); the second check is of the form: if (is_hugepd()) page = follow_huge_pd(). We can replace these checks, as well as the special handling routines such as follow_huge_p?d() and follow_huge_pd() with a single routine to handle hugetlb vmas. A new routine hugetlb_follow_page_mask is called for hugetlb vmas at the beginning of follow_page_mask. hugetlb_follow_page_mask will use the existing routine huge_pte_offset to walk page tables looking for hugetlb entries. huge_pte_offset can be overwritten by architectures, and already handles special cases such as hugepd entries. arch: Introduce CONFIG_FUNCTION_ALIGNMENT
Generic function-alignment infrastructure. Architectures can select FUNCTION_ALIGNMENT_xxB symbols; the FUNCTION_ALIGNMENT symbol is then set to the largest such selected size, 0 otherwise. From this the -falign-functions compiler argument and __ALIGN macro are set. This incorporates the DEBUG_FORCE_FUNCTION_ALIGN_64B knob and future alignment requirements for x86_64 (later in this series) into a single place. NOTE: also removes the 0x90 filler byte from the generic __ALIGN primitive, that value makes no sense outside of x86. NOTE: .balign 0 reverts to a no-op. linux-next for a couple of months without, to my knowledge, any negative reports (or any positive ones, come to that). - Also the Maple Tree from Liam R. Howlett. An overlapping range-based tree for vmas. It it apparently slight more efficient in its own right, but is mainly targeted at enabling work to reduce mmap_lock contention. Liam has identified a number of other tree users in the kernel which could be beneficially onverted to mapletrees. kbuild: remove head-y syntax
Kbuild puts the objects listed in head-y at the head of vmlinux. Conventionally, we do this for head*.S, which contains the kernel entry point. A counter approach is to control the section order by the linker script. Actually, the code marked as __HEAD goes into the ".head.text" section, which is placed before the normal ".text" section. I do not know if both of them are needed. From the build system perspective, head-y is not mandatory. If you can achieve the proper code placement by the linker script only, it would be cleaner. I collected the current head-y objects into head-object-list.txt. It is a whitelist. My hope is it will be reduced in the long run. kbuild: use obj-y instead extra-y for objects placed at the head
The objects placed at the head of vmlinux need special treatments: - arch/$(SRCARCH)/Makefile adds them to head-y in order to place them before other archives in the linker command line. - arch/$(SRCARCH)/kernel/Makefile adds them to extra-y instead of obj-y to avoid them going into built-in.a. This commit gets rid of the latter. Create vmlinux.a to collect all the objects that are unconditionally linked to vmlinux. The objects listed in head-y are moved to the head of vmlinux.a by using 'ar m'. With this, arch/$(SRCARCH)/kernel/Makefile can consistently use obj-y for builtin objects. There is no *.o that is directly linked to vmlinux. Drop unneeded code in scripts/clang-tools/gen_compile_commands.py. $(AR) mPi needs 'T' to workaround the llvm-ar bug. ia64: fix clock_getres(CLOCK_MONOTONIC) to report ITC frequency
clock_gettime(CLOCK_MONOTONIC, &tp) is very precise on ia64 as it uses ITC (similar to rdtsc on x86). It's not quite a hrtimer as it is a few times slower than 1ns. Usually 2-3ns. clock_getres(CLOCK_MONOTONIC, &res) never reflected that fact and reported 0.04s precision (1/HZ value). In https://bugs.gentoo.org/596382 gstreamer's test suite failed loudly when it noticed precision discrepancy. Before the change: clock_getres(CLOCK_MONOTONIC, &res) reported 250Hz precision. After the change: clock_getres(CLOCK_MONOTONIC, &res) reports ITC (400Mhz) precision. The patch is based on matoro's fix. I added a bit of explanation why we need to special-case arch-specific clock_getres(). All non-UAPI asm/termios.h consist of include of UAPI counterpart and, possibly, include of linux/uaccess.h The latter can't be simply removed, even though nothing in linux/termios.h doesn't depend upon it anymore - there are several places that rely upon that indirect chain of includes to pull linux/uaccess.h. So the include needs to be lifted out of there - we lift into tty_driver.h, serdev.h and places that pull asm/termios.h, but none of * linux/uaccess.h (obvious) * net/sock.h (pulls uaccess.h) * linux/{tty,tty_driver,serdev}.h (tty.h pulls tty_driver.h) That leaves us just with the include of UAPI asm/termios.h, which is what <asm/termios.h> will resolve to if we simply remove non-UAPI header. EFI efivars sysfs interface removal
Remove the obsolete 'efivars' sysfs based interface to the EFI variable store, now that all users have moved to the efivarfs pseudo file system, which was created ~10 years ago to address some fundamental shortcomings in the sysfs based driver. profile: setup_profiling_timer() is moslty not implemented
The setup_profiling_timer() is mostly un-implemented by many architectures. In many places it isn't guarded by CONFIG_PROFILE which is needed for it to be used. Make it a weak symbol in kernel/profile.c and remove the 'return -EINVAL' implementations from the kenrel. There are a couple of architectures which do return 0 from the setup_profiling_timer() function but they don't seem to do anything else with it. To keep the /proc compatibility for now, leave these for a future update or removal. PCI: Remove pci_get_legacy_ide_irq() and asm-generic/pci.h
pci_get_legacy_ide_irq() is only used on platforms that support PNP, so many architectures define it but never use it. Replace uses of it with ATA_PRIMARY_IRQ() and ATA_SECONDARY_IRQ(), which provide the same functionality. Some architectures and irqchip drivers modify the cpumask returned by irq_data_get_affinity_mask, usually by copying in to it. This is problematic for uniprocessor configurations, where the affinity mask should be constant, as it is known at compile time. Add and use a setter for the affinity mask, following the pattern of irq_data_update_effective_affinity. This allows the getter function to return a const cpumask pointer. bitops: unify non-atomic bitops prototypes across architectures
Currently, there is a mess with the prototypes of the non-atomic bitops across the different architectures: ret bool, int, unsigned long nr int, long, unsigned int, unsigned long addr volatile unsigned long *, volatile void * Thankfully, it doesn't provoke any bugs, but can sometimes make the compiler angry when it's not handy at all. Adjust all the prototypes to the following standard: ret bool retval can be only 0 or 1 nr unsigned long native; signed makes no sense addr volatile unsigned long * bitmaps are arrays of ulongs Next, some architectures don't define 'arch_' versions as they don't support instrumentation, others do. To make sure there is always the same set of callables present and to ease any potential future changes, make them all follow the rule: * architecture-specific files define only 'arch_' versions; * non-prefixed versions can be defined only in asm-generic files; and place the non-prefixed definitions into a new file in asm-generic to be included by non-instrumented architectures. Finally, add some static assertions in order to prevent people from making a mess in this room again. I also used the %__always_inline attribute consistently, so that they always get resolved to the actual operations. ia64, processor: fix -Wincompatible-pointer-types in ia64_get_irr()
test_bit(), as any other bitmap op, takes `unsigned long *` as a
second argument (pointer to the actual bitmap), as any bitmap
itself is an array of unsigned longs. However, the ia64_get_irr()
code passes a ref to `u64` as a second argument.
This works with the ia64 bitops implementation due to that they
have `void *` as the second argument and then cast it later on.
This works with the bitmap API itself due to that `unsigned long`
has the same size on ia64 as `u64` (`unsigned long long`), but
from the compiler PoV those two are different.
Define @irr as `unsigned long` to fix that. That implies no
functional changes. Has been hidden for 16 years!

arch/*/: remove CONFIG_VIRT_TO_BUS
All architecture-independent users of virt_to_bus() and bus_to_virt() have been fixed to use the dma mapping interfaces or have been removed now. This means the definitions on most architectures, and the CONFIG_VIRT_TO_BUS symbol are now obsolete and can be removed. The only exceptions to this are a few network and scsi drivers for m68k Amiga and VME machines and ppc32 Macintosh. These drivers work correctly with the old interfaces and are probably not worth changing. On alpha and parisc, virt_to_bus() were still used in asm/floppy.h. alpha can use isa_virt_to_bus() like x86 does, and parisc can just open-code the virt_to_phys() here, as this is architecture specific code. I tried updating the bus-virt-phys-mapping.rst documentation, which started as an email from Linus to explain some details of the Linux-2.0 driver interfaces. The bits about virt_to_bus() were declared obsolete backin 2000, and the rest is not all that relevant any more, so in the end I just decided to remove the file completely. mm: avoid unnecessary page fault retires on shared memory types
I observed that for each of the shared file-backed page faults, we're very likely to retry one more time for the 1st write fault upon no page. It's because we'll need to release the mmap lock for dirty rate limit purpose with balance_dirty_pages_ratelimited() (in fault_dirty_shared_page()). Then after that throttling we return VM_FAULT_RETRY. We did that probably because VM_FAULT_RETRY is the only way we can return to the fault handler at that time telling it we've released the mmap lock. However that's not ideal because it's very likely the fault does not need to be retried at all since the pgtable was well installed before the throttling, so the next continuous fault (including taking mmap read lock, walk the pgtable, etc.) could be in most cases unnecessary. It's not only slowing down page faults for shared file-backed, but also add more mmap lock contention which is in most cases not needed at all. To observe this, one could try to write to some shmem page and look at "pgfault" value in /proc/vmstat, then we should expect 2 counts for each shmem write simply because we retried, and vm event "pgfault" will capture that. To make it more efficient, add a new VM_FAULT_COMPLETED return code just to show that we've completed the whole fault and released the lock. It's also a hint that we should very possibly not need another fault immediately on this page because we've just completed it. This patch provides a ~12% perf boost on my aarch64 test VM with a simple program sequentially dirtying 400MB shmem file being mmap()ed and these are the time it needs: Before: 650.980 ms (+-1.94%) After: 569.396 ms (+-1.38%) I believe it could help more than that. We need some special care on GUP and the s390 pgfault handler (for gmap code before returning from pgfault), the rest changes in the page fault handlers should be relatively straightforward. Another thing to mention is that mm_account_fault() does take this new fault as a generic fault to be accounted, unlike VM_FAULT_RETRY. I explicitly didn't touch hmm_vma_fault() and break_ksm() because they do not handle VM_FAULT_RETRY even with existing code, so I'm literally keeping them as-is. While looking at the ptrace problems with PREEMPT_RT and the problems
of Peter Zijlstra was encountering with ptrace in his freezer rewrite I identified some cleanups to ptrace_stop that make sense on their own and move make resolving the other problems much simpler. The biggest issue is the habbit of the ptrace code to change task->__state from the tracer to suppress TASK_WAKEKILL from waking up the tracee. No other code in the kernel does that and it is straight forward to update signal_wake_up and friends to make that unnecessary. Peter's task freezer sets frozen tasks to a new state TASK_FROZEN and then it stores them by calling "wake_up_state(t, TASK_FROZEN)" relying on the fact that all stopped states except the special stop states can tolerate spurious wake up and recover their state. The state of stopped and traced tasked is changed to be stored in task->jobctl as well as in task->__state. This makes it possible for the freezer to recover tasks in these special states, as well as serving as a general cleanup. With a little more work in that direction I believe TASK_STOPPED can learn to tolerate spurious wake ups and become an ordinary stop state. The TASK_TRACED state has to remain a special state as the registers for a process are only reliably available when the process is stopped in the scheduler. Fundamentally ptrace needs acess to the saved register values of a task. There are bunch of semi-random ptrace related cleanups that were found while looking at these issues. arch/ia64: replace cpumask_weight with cpumask_empty where appropriate
setup_arch() calls cpumask_weight() to check if any bit of a given cpumask is set. We can do it more efficiently with cpumask_empty() because cpumask_empty() stops traversing the cpumask as soon as it finds first set bit, while cpumask_weight() counts all bits unconditionally. Patch series "Fix CONT-PTE/PMD size hugetlb issue when unmapping or migrating", v4. presently, migrating a hugetlb page or unmapping a poisoned hugetlb page, we'll use ptep_clear_flush() and set_pte_at() to nuke the page table entry and remap it, and this is incorrect for CONT-PTE or CONT-PMD size hugetlb page, which will cause potential data consistent issue. This patch set will change to use hugetlb related APIs to fix this issue. kbuild: factor out the common installation code into scripts/install.sh
Many architectures have similar install.sh scripts. The first half is really generic; it verifies that the kernel image and System.map exist, then executes ~/bin/${INSTALLKERNEL} or /sbin/${INSTALLKERNEL} if available. The second half is kind of arch-specific; it copies the kernel image and System.map to the destination, but the code is slightly different. Factor out the generic part into scripts/install.sh. fork: Generalize PF_IO_WORKER handling
Add fn and fn_arg members into struct kernel_clone_args and test for them in copy_thread (instead of testing for PF_KTHREAD | PF_IO_WORKER). This allows any task that wants to be a user space task that only runs in kernel mode to use this functionality. The code on x86 is an exception and still retains a PF_KTHREAD test because x86 unlikely everything else handles kthreads slightly differently than user space tasks that start with a function. The functions that created tasks that start with a function have been updated to set ".fn" and ".fn_arg" instead of ".stack" and ".stack_size". The architectures ia64 and parisc have special handling for the idle thread in copy_process. Add a flag named idle to kernel_clone_args and use it to explicity test if an idle process is being created. Fullfill the expectations of the rest of the copy_thread implemetations and pass a function pointer in .stack from fork_idle(). This makes what is happening in copy_thread better defined, and is useful to make idle threads less special. Patch series "Convert vmcore to use an iov_iter", v5. For some reason several people have been sending bad patches to fix compiler warnings in vmcore recently. Here's how it should be done. Compile-tested only on x86. As noted in the first patch, s390 should take this conversion a bit further, but I'm not inclined to do that work myself. This patch (of 3): Instead of passing in a 'buf' and 'userbuf' argument, pass in an iov_iter. s390 needs more work to pass the iov_iter down further, or refactor, but I'd be more comfortable if someone who can test on s390 did that work. It's more convenient to convert the whole of read_from_oldmem() to take an iov_iter at the same time, so rename it to read_from_oldmem_iter() and add a temporary read_from_oldmem() wrapper that creates an iov_iter. Pass a boolean flag to indicate if swiotlb needs to be enabled based on the addressing needs, and replace the verbose argument with a set of flags, including one to force enable bounce buffering. ptrace: Cleanups for v5.18
This set of changes removes tracehook.h, moves modification of all of the ptrace fields inside of siglock to remove races, adds a missing permission check to ptrace.c The removal of tracehook.h is quite significant as it has been a major source of confusion in recent years. Much of that confusion was around task_work and TIF_NOTIFY_SIGNAL (which I have now decoupled making the semantics clearer). For people who don't know tracehook.h is a vestiage of an attempt to implement uprobes like functionality that was never fully merged, and was later superseeded by uprobes when uprobes was merged. For many years now we have been removing what tracehook functionaly a little bit at a time. To the point where now anything left in tracehook.h is some weird strange thing that is difficult to understand. Eric W. asm-generic updates for 5.18
There are three sets of updates for 5.18 in the asm-generic tree: - The set_fs()/get_fs() infrastructure gets removed for good. This was already gone from all major architectures, but now we can finally remove it everywhere, which loses some particularly tricky and error-prone code. There is a small merge conflict against a parisc cleanup, the solution is to use their new version. - The nds32 architecture ends its tenure in the Linux kernel. The hardware is still used and the code is in reasonable shape, but the mainline port is not actively maintained any more, as all remaining users are thought to run vendor kernels that would never be updated to a future release. drivers/base/node: consolidate node device subsystem initialization in node_dev_init()
... and call node_dev_init() after memory_dev_init() from driver_init(), so before any of the existing arch/subsys calls. All online nodes should be known at that point: early during boot, arch code determines node and zone ranges and sets the relevant nodes online; usually this happens in setup_arch(). This is in line with memory_dev_init(), which initializes the memory device subsystem and creates all memory block devices. Similar to memory_dev_init(), panic() if anything goes wrong, we don't want to continue with such basic initialization errors. The important part is that node_dev_init() gets called after memory_dev_init() and after cpu_dev_init(), but before any of the relevant archs call register_cpu() to register the new cpu device under the node device. The latter should be the case for the current users of topology_init(). mm, memory_hotplug: drop arch_free_nodedata
Prior to "mm: handle uninitialized numa nodes gracefully" memory hotplug used to allocate pgdat when memory has been added to a node (hotadd_init_pgdat) arch_free_nodedata has been only used in the failure path because once the pgdat is exported (to be visible by NODA_DATA(nid)) it cannot really be freed because there is no synchronization available for that. pgdat is allocated for each possible nodes now so the memory hotplug doesn't need to do the ever use arch_free_nodedata so drop it. This patch doesn't introduce any functional change. mm: handle uninitialized numa nodes gracefully
We have had several reports [1][2][3] that page allocator blows up when an allocation from a possible node is requested. The underlying reason is that NODE_DATA for the specific node is not allocated. NUMA specific initialization is arch specific and it can vary a lot. E.g. x86 tries to initialize all nodes that have some cpu affinity (see init_cpu_to_node) but this can be insufficient because the node might be cpuless for example. One way to address this problem would be to check for !node_online nodes when trying to get a zonelist and silently fall back to another node. That is unfortunately adding a branch into allocator hot path and it doesn't handle any other potential NODE_DATA users. This patch takes a different approach (following a lead of [3]) and it pre allocates pgdat for all possible nodes in an arch indipendent code - free_area_init. All uninitialized nodes are treated as memoryless nodes. node_state of the node is not changed because that would lead to other side effects - e.g. sysfs representation of such a node and from past discussions [4] it is known that some tools might have problems digesting that. Newly allocated pgdat only gets a minimal initialization and the rest of the work is expected to be done by the memory hotplug - hotadd_new_pgdat (renamed to hotadd_init_pgdat). generic_alloc_nodedata is changed to use the memblock allocator because neither page nor slab allocators are available at the stage when all pgdats are allocated. Hotplug doesn't allocate pgdat anymore so we can use the early boot allocator. The only arch specific implementation is ia64 and that is changed to use the early allocator as well. Patch series "mm, memory_hotplug: handle unitialized numa node gracefully". The core of the fix is patch 2 which also links existing bug reports. The high level goal is to have all possible numa nodes have their pgdat allocated and initialized so for_each_possible_node(nid) NODE_DATA(nid) will never return garbage. This has proven to be problem in several places when an offline numa node is used for an allocation just to realize that node_data and therefore allocation fallback zonelists are not initialized and such an allocation request blows up. There were attempts to address that by checking node_online in several places including the page allocator. This patchset approaches the problem from a different perspective and instead of special casing, which just adds a runtime overhead, it allocates pglist_data for each possible node. This can add some memory overhead for platforms with high number of possible nodes if they do not contain any memory. This should be a rather rare configuration though. How to test this? - Reduce the amount of work to release a task stack in context switch. There is no real reason to do cgroup accounting and memory freeing in this performance sensitive context. Aside of this the invoked functions cannot be called from this preemption disabled context on PREEMPT_RT enabled kernels. Solve this by moving the accounting into do_exit() and delaying the freeing of the stack unless the vmap stack can be cached. - Provide a mechanism to delay raising signals from atomic context on PREEMPT_RT enabled kernels as sighand::lock cannot be acquired. arch: Add pmd_pfn() where it is missing
We need to use this function in common code, so define it for architectures and/or configrations that miss it. The result of pmd_pfn() will only be used if TRANSPARENT_HUGEPAGE is enabled, but a function or macro called pmd_pfn() must be defined, even on machines with two level page tables. resume_user_mode: Move to resume_user_mode.h
Move set_notify_resume and tracehook_notify_resume into resume_user_mode.h. While doing that rename tracehook_notify_resume to resume_user_mode_work. Update all of the places that included tracehook.h for these functions to include resume_user_mode.h instead. Update all of the callers of tracehook_notify_resume to call resume_user_mode_work. uaccess: generalize access_ok()
There are many different ways that access_ok() is defined across architectures, but in the end, they all just compare against the user_addr_max() value or they accept anything. Provide one definition that works for most architectures, checking against TASK_SIZE_MAX for user processes or skipping the check inside of uaccess_kernel() sections. For architectures without CONFIG_SET_FS(), this should be the fastest check, as it comes down to a single comparison of a pointer against a compile-time constant, while the architecture specific versions tend to do something more complex for historic reasons or get something wrong. Type checking for __user annotations is handled inconsistently across architectures, but this is easily simplified as well by using an inline function that takes a 'const void __user *' argument. A handful of callers need an extra __user annotation for this. Some architectures had trick to use 33-bit or 65-bit arithmetic on the addresses to calculate the overflow, however this simpler version uses fewer registers, which means it can produce better object code in the end despite needing a second (statically predicted) branch. fork, IA64: Provide alloc_thread_stack_node() for IA64
Provide a generic alloc_thread_stack_node() for IA64 and CONFIG_ARCH_THREAD_STACK_ALLOCATOR which returns stack pointer and sets task_struct::stack so it behaves exactly like the other implementations. Rename IA64's alloc_thread_stack_node() and add the generic version to the fork code so it is in one place _and_ to drastically lower the chances of fat fingering the IA64 code. Do the same for free_thread_stack().
