724ba8b30b console/dummy: leave .con_font_get set to NULL
When this method is set, the caller expects struct console_font fields
to be properly initialized when it returns. Leave it unset otherwise
nonsensical (leaked kernel stack) values are returned to user space.

c82084117f vgacon: Set VGA struct resource types
Set the resource type when we reserve VGA-related I/O port resources.

The resource code doesn't actually look at the type, so it inserts
resources without a type in the tree correctly even without this change.
But if we ever print a resource without a type, it looks like this:

  vga+ [??? 0x000003c0-0x000003df flags 0x0]

Setting the type means it will be printed correctly as:

  vga+ [io 0x000003c0-0x000003df]

b24413180f License cleanup: add SPDX GPL-2.0 license identifier to files with no license
Many source files in the tree are missing licensing information, which
makes it harder for compliance tools to determine the correct license.

By default all files without license information are under the default
license of the kernel, which is GPL version 2.

Update the files which contain no license information with the 'GPL-2.0'
SPDX license identifier. The SPDX identifier is a legally binding
shorthand, which can be used instead of the full boiler plate text.

This patch is based on work done by Thomas Gleixner and Kate Stewart and
Philippe Ombredanne.

How this work was done:

Patches were generated and checked against linux-4.14-rc6 for a subset of
the use cases:
 - file had no licensing information it it.
 - file was a */uapi/* one with no licensing information in it,
 - file was a */uapi/* one with existing licensing information,

Further patches will be generated in subsequent months to fix up cases
where non-standard license headers were used, and references to license
had to be inferred by heuristics based on keywords.

The analysis to determine which SPDX License Identifier to be applied to
a file was done in a spreadsheet of side by side results from of the
output of two independent scanners (ScanCode & Windriver) producing SPDX
tag:value files created by Philippe Ombredanne. Philippe prepared the
base worksheet, and did an initial spot review of a few 1000 files.

The 4.13 kernel was the starting point of the analysis with 60,537 files
assessed. Kate Stewart did a file by file comparison of the scanner
results in the spreadsheet to determine which SPDX license identifier(s)
to be applied to the file. She confirmed any determination that was not
immediately clear with lawyers working with the Linux Foundation.

Criteria used to select files for SPDX license identifier tagging was:
 - Files considered eligible had to be source code files.
 - Make and config files were included as candidates if they contained >5
   lines of source
 - File already had some variant of a license header in it (even if <5
   lines).

All documentation files were explicitly excluded.

The following heuristics were used to determine which SPDX license
identifiers to apply.

 - when both scanners couldn't find any license traces, file was
considered to have no license information in it, and the top level
   COPYING file license applied.

For non */uapi/* files that summary was:

   SPDX license identifier # files
   ---------------------------------------------------|-------
   GPL-2.0 11139

and resulted in the first patch in this series.

If that file was a */uapi/* path one, it was "GPL-2.0 WITH
Linux-syscall-note" otherwise it was "GPL-2.0". Results of that was:

   SPDX license identifier # files
   ---------------------------------------------------|-------
   GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note 930

and resulted in the second patch in this series.

 - if a file had some form of licensing information in it, and was one
of the */uapi/* ones, it was denoted with the Linux-syscall-note if
any GPL family license was found in the file or had no licensing in
it (per prior point). Results summary:

   SPDX license identifier # files
   ---------------------------------------------------|------
   GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note 270
   GPL-2.0+ WITH Linux-syscall-note 169
   ((GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note) OR BSD-2-Clause) 21
   ((GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note) OR BSD-3-Clause) 17
   LGPL-2.1+ WITH Linux-syscall-note 15
   GPL-1.0+ WITH Linux-syscall-note 14
   ((GPL-2.0+ WITH Linux-syscall-note) OR BSD-3-Clause) 5
   LGPL-2.0+ WITH Linux-syscall-note 4
   LGPL-2.1 WITH Linux-syscall-note 3
   ((GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note) OR MIT) 3
   ((GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note) AND MIT) 1

and that resulted in the third patch in this series.

 - when the two scanners agreed on the detected license(s), that became
   the concluded license(s).

 - when there was disagreement between the two scanners (one detected a
license but the other didn't, or they both detected different
licenses) a manual inspection of the file occurred.

 - In most cases a manual inspection of the information in the file
resulted in a clear resolution of the license that should apply (and
which scanner probably needed to revisit its heuristics).

 - When it was not immediately clear, the license identifier was
confirmed with lawyers working with the Linux Foundation.

 - If there was any question as to the appropriate license identifier,
the file was flagged for further research and to be revisited later
   in time.

In total, over 70 hours of logged manual review was done on the
spreadsheet to determine the SPDX license identifiers to apply to the
source files by Kate, Philippe, Thomas and, in some cases, confirmation
by lawyers working with the Linux Foundation.

Kate also obtained a third independent scan of the 4.13 code base from
FOSSology, and compared selected files where the other two scanners
disagreed against that SPDX file, to see if there was new insights. The
Windriver scanner is based on an older version of FOSSology in part, so
they are related.

Thomas did random spot checks in about 500 files from the spreadsheets
for the uapi headers and agreed with SPDX license identifier in the
files he inspected. For the non-uapi files Thomas did random spot checks
in about 15000 files.

In initial set of patches against 4.14-rc6, 3 files were found to have
copy/paste license identifier errors, and have been fixed to reflect the
correct identifier.

Additionally Philippe spent 10 hours this week doing a detailed manual
inspection and review of the 12,461 patched files from the initial patch
version early this week with:
 - a full scancode scan run, collecting the matched texts, detected
   license ids and scores
 - reviewing anything where there was a license detected (about 500+
files) to ensure that the applied SPDX license was correct
 - reviewing anything where there was no detection but the patch license
was not GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note to ensure that the applied
   SPDX license was correct

This produced a worksheet with 20 files needing minor correction. This
worksheet was then exported into 3 different .csv files for the
different types of files to be modified.

These .csv files were then reviewed by Greg. Thomas wrote a script to
parse the csv files and add the proper SPDX tag to the file, in the
format that the file expected. This script was further refined by Greg
based on the output to detect more types of files automatically and to
distinguish between header and source .c files (which need different
comment types.) Finally Greg ran the script using the .csv files to
generate the patches.

6104c37094 fbcon: Make fbcon a built-time depency for fbdev
There's a bunch of folks who're trying to make printk less
contended and faster, but there's a problem: printk uses the
console_lock, and the console lock has become the BKL for all things
fbdev/fbcon, which in turn pulled in half the drm subsystem under that
lock. That's awkward.

There reasons for that is probably just a historical accident:

- fbcon is a runtime option of fbdev, i.e. at runtime you can pick
whether your fbdev driver instances are used as kernel consoles.
Unfortunately this wasn't implemented with some module option, but
through some module loading magic: As long as you don't load
fbcon.ko, there's no fbdev console support, but loading it (in any
order wrt fbdev drivers) will create console instances for all fbdev
  drivers.

- This was implemented through a notifier chain. fbcon.ko enumerates
all fbdev instances at load time and also registers itself as
listener in the fbdev notifier. The fbdev core tries to register new
fbdev instances with fbcon using the notifier.

- On top of that the modifier chain is also used at runtime by the
fbdev subsystem to e.g. control backlights for panels.

- The problem is that the notifier puts a mutex locking context
between fbdev and fbcon, which mixes up the locking contexts for
both the runtime usage and the register time usage to notify fbcon.
And at runtime fbcon (through the fbdev core) might call into the
notifier from a printk critical section while console_lock is held.

- This means console_lock must be an outer lock for the entire fbdev
subsystem, which also means it must be acquired when registering a
new framebuffer driver as the outermost lock since we might call
into fbcon (through the notifier) which would result in a locking
inversion if fbcon would acquire the console_lock from its notifier
callback (which it needs to register the console).

- console_lock can be held anywhere, since printk can be called
anywhere, and through the above story, plus drm/kms being an fbdev
driver, we pull in a shocking amount of locking hiercharchy
underneath the console_lock. Which makes cleaning up printk really
hard (not even splitting console_lock into an rwsem is all that
  useful due to this).

There's various ways to address this, but the cleanest would be to
make fbcon a compile-time option, where fbdev directly calls the fbcon
register functions from register_framebuffer, or dummy static inline
versions if fbcon is disabled. Maybe augmented with a runtime knob to
disable fbcon, if that's needed (for debugging perhaps).

But this could break some users who rely on the magic "loading
fbcon.ko enables/disables fbdev framebuffers at runtime" thing, even
if that's unlikely. Hence we must be careful:

1. Create a compile-time dependency between fbcon and fbdev in the
least minimal way. This is what this patch does.

2. Wait at least 1 year to give possible users time to scream about
how we broke their setup. Unlikely, since all distros make fbcon
compile-in, and embedded platforms only compile stuff they know they
need anyway. But still.

3. Convert the notifier to direct functions calls, with dummy static
inlines if fbcon is disabled. We'll still need the fb notifier for the
other uses (like backlights), but we can probably move it into the fb
core (atm it must be built-into vmlinux).

4. Push console_lock down the call-chain, until it is down in
console_register again.

5. Finally start to clean up and rework the printk/console locking.

For context of this saga see

plus the pile of commits on top that tried to make this all work
without terminally upsetting lockdep. We've uncovered all this when
console_lock lockdep annotations where added in

commit daee779718
Author: Daniel Vetter <daniel.vetter@ffwll.ch>

console: implement lockdep support for console_lock

On the patch itself:
- Switch CONFIG_FRAMEBUFFER_CONSOLE to be a boolean, using the overall
CONFIG_FB tristate to decided whether it should be a module or
  built-in.

- At first I thought I could force the build depency with just a dummy
symbol that fbcon.ko exports and fb.ko uses. But that leads to a
module depency cycle (it works fine when built-in).

Since this tight binding is the entire goal the simplest solution is
to move all the fbcon modules (and there's a bunch of optinal
source-files which are each modules of their own, for no good
reason) into the overall fb.ko core module. That's a bit more than
what I would have liked to do in this patch, but oh well.

734f13b11d mdacon: make mda_vram_base u16 *
Given every user of mda_vram_base expects a pointer, let
mda_vram_base be a pointer to u16.

The offset calculation in mda_detect had to be adjusted by / 2 (due to
different pointer arithmetic now).

We introduce a cast to a value returned from VGA_MAP_MEM. But I will
change VGA_MAP_MEM to return a pointer later too. But vgacon needs a
similar change first.

aabd31c421 console: Add persistent scrollback buffers for all VGA consoles
Add a scrollback buffers for each VGA console. The benefit is that
the scrollback history is not flushed when switching between consoles
but is persistent.
The buffers are allocated on demand when a new console is opened.

This breaks tools like clear_console that rely on flushing the
scrollback history by switching back and forth between consoles
which is why this feature is disabled by default.
Use the escape sequence \e[3J instead for flushing the buffer.

This new callback is in preparation for persistent scrollback buffer

With a single scrollback buffer for all consoles, we could flush the

8aac7f3436 fbcon: Fix vc attr at deinit
fbcon can deal with vc_hi_font_mask (the upper 256 chars) and adjust
the vc attrs dynamically when vc_hi_font_mask is changed at
fbcon_init(). When the vc_hi_font_mask is set, it remaps the attrs in
the existing console buffer with one bit shift up (for 9 bits), while
it remaps with one bit shift down (for 8 bits) when the value is
cleared. It works fine as long as the font gets updated after fbcon
was initialized.

However, we hit a bizarre problem when the console is switched to
another fb driver (typically from vesafb or efifb to drmfb). At
switching to the new fb driver, we temporarily rebind the console to
the dummy console, then rebind to the new driver. During the
switching, we leave the modified attrs as is. Thus, the new fbcon
takes over the old buffer as if it were to contain 8 bits chars
(although the attrs are still shifted for 9 bits), and effectively
this results in the yellow color texts instead of the original white
color, as found in the bugzilla entry below.

An easy fix for this is to re-adjust the attrs before leaving the
fbcon at con_deinit callback. Since the code to adjust the attrs is
already present in the current fbcon code, in this patch, we simply
factor out the relevant code, and call it from fbcon_deinit().

d705ff3818 tty: vt, cleanup and document con_scroll
Scrolling helpers scrup and scrdown both accept 'top' and 'bottom' as
unsigned int. Number of lines 'nr' is accepted as int, but all callers
pass down unsigned too. So change the type of 'nr' to unsigned too.
Now, promote unsigned int from the helpers up to the con_scroll
hook which actually accepted all those as signed int.

Next, the 'dir' parameter can have only two values and we define
constants for that: SM_UP and SM_DOWN. Switch them to enum and do
proper type checking on 'dir' too.

Finally, document the behaviour of the hook.

a1e533ec07 fbcon: set a default value to blink interval
Since commit 27a4c827c3
fbcon: use the cursor blink interval provided by vt

two attempts have been made at fixing a possible hang caused by
cursor_timer_handler. That function registers a timer to be triggered at
"jiffies + fbcon_ops.cur_blink_jiffies".

A new case had been encountered during initialisation of clcd-pl11x:

    fbcon_fb_registered
    do_fbcon_takeover

    ->  do_register_con_driver
        fbcon_startup
    (A) add_cursor_timer (with cur_blink_jiffies = 0)

    ->  do_bind_con_driver
        visual_init
        fbcon_init
    (B) cur_blink_jiffies = msecs_to_jiffies(vc->vc_cur_blink_ms);

If we take an softirq anywhere between A and B (and we do),
cursor_timer_handler executes indefinitely.

Instead of patching all possible paths that lead to this case one at a
time, fix the issue at the source and initialise cur_blink_jiffies to
200ms when allocating fbcon_ops. This was its default value before
aforesaid commit. fbcon_cursor or fbcon_init will refine this value
downstream.

031e29b587 drivers/video/concole: add negative dependency for VGA_CONSOLE on ARC
Architectures which support VGA console must define screen_info
structurture from "uapi/linux/screen_info.h". Otherwise undefined
symbol error occurs. Usually it's defined in "setup.c" for each
architecture.

If an architecture does not support VGA console (ARC's case) there are 2
ways: define a dummy instance of screen_info or add a negative
dependency for VGA_CONSOLE in to prevent selecting this option.

I've implemented the second way. However the best solution is to add
HAVE_VGA_CONSOLE option for targets which support VGA console. Then
turn off VGA_CONSOLE by default and add dependency to HAVE_VGA_CONSOLE.
But right now it's better to just add a negative dependency for ARC and
then consider how to collaborate about this issue with maintainers of
other architectures.

a5edce4218 fbcon: Avoid deleting a timer in IRQ context
Commit 27a4c827c3 ("fbcon: use the cursor blink interval provided by
vt") unconditionally removes the cursor blink timer. Unfortunately that
wreaks havoc under some circumstances. An easily reproducible way is to
use both the framebuffer console and a debug serial port as the console
output for kernel messages (e.g. "console=ttyS0 console=tty1" on the
kernel command-line. Upon boot this triggers a warning from within the
del_timer_sync() function because it is called from IRQ context:

37773c4e7f fbcon: Fix option parsing control flow in fb_console_setup
Since strsep is used to tokenize the options string, after each option
match the code should use "continue" to get the next token from strsep.
This patch applies this pattern consistently.

Previously, for "scrollback:" and "map:" the parse code would return
(unconditionally: strsep ensures *options != ','), causing any
following option to be ignored, while for "vc:" the parse code would
go on to parse further options within the same token, which could lead
to invalid input being accepted.

f74a289b94 framebuffer: fix border color
The framebuffer code uses the current background color to fill the border
when switching consoles, however, this results in inconsistent behavior.
For example:
- start Midnigh Commander
- the border is black
- switch to another console and switch back
- the border is cyan
- type something into the command line in mc
- the border is cyan
- switch to another console and switch back
- the border is black
- press F9 to go to menu
- the border is black
- switch to another console and switch back
- the border is dark blue

When switching to a console with Midnight Commander, the border is random
color that was left selected by the slang subsystem.

This patch fixes this inconsistency by always using black as the
background color when switching consoles.

a4de05268e drm/i915: Kick out vga console
Touching the VGA resources on an IVB EFI machine causes hard hangs when
we then kick out the efifb. Ouch.

Apparently this also prevents unclaimed register errors on hsw and
hard machine hangs on my i855gm when trying to unbind fbcon.

Also, we want this to make I915_FBDEV=n safe.

v2: Rebase and pimp commit message.

v3: We also need to unregister the vga console, otherwise the unbind
of the fb console before module unload might resurrect it again.

v4: Ignore errors when the vga console is already unregistered - this
can happen when e.g. reloading i915.ko.
