serial8250_startup() doesn't disable interrupts while taking the &up->port.lock
which might race against the interrupt handler serial8250_interrupt(), which
when entered, will deadlock waiting for the lock to be released.

This patch introduces baudrate setting support via the generic clock API.
When present the optional device tree clock property is used instead of
fsl-cpm-brg. Platforms can then define complex clock schemes, to output
the serial clock on an external pin for instance.

This patch replaces the get_mctrl/set_mctrl stubs with modem control line
read/write access through the GPIO lib.
Available modem control lines are described in the device tree using GPIO
bindings. The driver expect a GPIO pin for each of the CTS, RTS, DCD, DSR,
DTR and RI signals. Unused control lines can be left out.

SH7763 has 3 SCIF device. Current code supports SCIF0 and 1.
SCIF0 and 1 are same register constitution, but only SCIF2 is different.
I added support of SCIF2.

Before setting STOP_TX, set _brkcr to 0 so the SMC does not send a break
character. The driver appears to properly re-initialize _brkcr when the
SMC is restarted.
Do not interrupt RX/TX when the termios is being adjusted; it results in
corrupted characters appearing on the line.

Changes to the generic console support code that happened a while ago
introduced a scenario where the initial console is used in parallel with
the final console during a brief period when switching between the two is
in progress. During that time a message about the switch-over is printed.
With some combinations of chips, firmware and drivers, such as the DEC
DZ11 clone used with the DECstation, a hang may happen because the
firmware used for the initial console may not expect the state of the chip
after it has been initialised by the driver.
This is a workaround for the DZ11 which reuses the power-management
callback to keep the transmitter of the line associated with the console
enabled. It reflects the consensus reached in a discussion a while ago.

Intel 82571 has a "Serial Over LAN" feature that doesn't properly
implements the receiving of break characters. When a break is received,
it doesn't set UART_LSR_DR and unless another character is received, the
break won't be received by the application.

Trying to compile the v850 port brings many compile errors, one of them exists
since at least kernel 2.6.19.
There also seems to be noone willing to bring this port back into a usable
state.
This patch therefore removes the v850 port.
If anyone ever decides to revive the v850 port the code will still be
available from older kernels, and it wouldn't be impossible for the port to
reenter the kernel if it would become actively maintained again.

With SMP kernels _irqsave spinlock disables only local interrupts, while
the shared serial interrupt could be assigned to the CPU that is not
currently starting up the serial port.
This might cause issues because serial8250_startup() routine issues
IRQ-triggering operations before registering the port in the IRQ chain
(though, this is fine to do and done explicitly because we don't want to
process any interrupts on the port startup).
With RT kernels and preemptable hardirqs, _irqsave spinlock does not
disable local hardirqs, and the bug could be reproduced much easily:

After this, all serial ports on the given IRQ are non-functional.
To fix the issue we should explicitly disable shared IRQ before
issuing any IRQ-triggering operations.
I also changed spin_lock_irqsave to the ordinary spin_lock, since it
seems to be safe: chain does not contain new port (yet), thus nobody
will interfere us from the ISRs.

Serial drivers using DMA (like the atmel_serial driver) tend to get very
confused when the xmit buffer is flushed and nobody told them. They
also tend to spew a lot of garbage since the DMA engine keeps running
after the buffer is flushed and possibly refilled with unrelated data.
This patch adds a new flush_buffer operation to the uart_ops struct,
along with a call to it from uart_flush_buffer() right after the xmit
buffer has been cleared. The driver can implement this in order to
syncronize its internal DMA state with the xmit buffer when the buffer
is flushed.

As part of a heuristic to identify modem devices, 8250_pnp.c
checks to see whether a device can be configured at any of the
legacy COM port addresses.
This patch moves the code that traverses the PNP "possible resource
options" from 8250_pnp.c to the PNP subsystem. This encapsulation
is important because a future patch will change the implementation
of those resource options.

Set port->fifosize to the software FIFO size, and update the port timeout
when the baud rate is modified. SCC ports have an optional 32 byte hardware
FIFO which is currently not taken into account, as there is no documented way
to check when the FIFO becomes empty.

Fix CPM serial port corruption when running with CONFIG_PREEMPT_RT.
Userland usage of console, and kernel printf's were stepping on each others toes.
Also only take lock if not in an oops.

I had 8250.nr_uarts=16 in the boot line of a test kernel and I had a weird
mysterious crash in sysfs. After taking an in-depth look I realized that
CONFIG_SERIAL_8250_NR_UARTS was set to 4 and I was walking off the end of
the serial8250_ports array.
Ouch!!!
Don't let this happen to someone else.

We assumed a 16MHz reference frequency for the UART. While this
is true for i.MX1 most of the time it is not true for MX27/MX31.
Also, add handling for the ONEMS register which is present on
newer versions of the chip and pass a sane minimum baudrate to
uart_get_baud_rate().

As reported by Vipul Gandhi, the current serial_match_port() doesn't work
for tty-devices using dynamic major number allocation. Fix it.
It oopses if you suspend a serial port with _dynamic_ major number. ATM,
I think, there's only the drivers/serial/jsm/jsm_driver.c driver, that
does it in-tree.

The S3C2410 serial driver in drivers/serial/s3c2410.c has been
growing bigger with the addition of more variants of this hardware
with the growing Samsung SoCs range. As such, it would be
easier to split this code up into a core and per-cpu drivers to
make driver addition easier, and the core smaller.

Add attribute to show the current clock source for the serial
driver and remove old and annoying debug output.
Note, this only currently shows the current source with a
"* " prefix to indicate that it is the current source. Future
code will list all the clock sources, with the non-selected
one with " " prefix.

Funny things may happen if we stop the USART clock before the shifter is
empty. Prevent this from happening by waiting until the shifter is
completely drained before allowing suspend to continue.

AVR32 doesn't have at91_suspend_entering_slow_clock(). Just assume the
clock will keep running for now.
David has a better solution for this, but this works for now. Leaving
the USART clock running won't prevent the PM code from entering deep
power-down modes anyway.

I made a change to u-boot that used the FP (Fractional Part) field of BRGR
to achieve more accurate baud rate generation. Unfortunately, the
atmel_serial driver looks at the whole BRGR register when trying to detect
the baud rate that the port is currently running at, so setting FP to a
nonzero value breaks the baud rate detection.
I'll sit on the u-boot patch for a while longer, but this is clearly a
bug in the atmel_serial driver which should be fixed.

This patch fixes two drivers that are using "serial" for driver_name and

Commit 64e9159f5d ("serial_core:
uart_set_ldisc infrastructure") introduced the ability for low-level
serial drivers to be informed when the tty ldisc changes.
However, the actual tty-layer function that does this callback for
serial devices was declared with the wrong type, having a spurious and
unused 'ldisc' argument.
This fixed the resulting compiler warning by just removing it.

The tty layer provides a callback that is used when the line discipline
is changed. Some hardware uses this to configure hardware specific
features such as IrDA mode on serial ports. Unfortunately the serial
layer does not provide this feature or pass it down to drivers.
Blackfin used to hack around this by rewriting the tty ops, but those are
now properly shared and const so the hack fails. Instead provide the
proper operations.
This change plus a follow up from the Blackfin guys is needed to avoid
blackfin losing features in this release.

enable_irq_wake() and disable_irq_wake() need to be balanced. However,
serial_core.c calls these for different conditions during the suspend and
resume functions...
This is causing a regular WARN_ON() as found at

Fix a potential issue in mpc52xx uart driver

mpc52xx_uart_int and __uart_put_char both try to acquire the
port->lock. Therefore the function sequence of:
mpc52xx_uart_int--> ...-->flush_to_ldisc-->...-->__uart_put_char
can potentially trigger a deadlock. To avoid this deadlock a fix
similar to that found in the 8250.c serial driver is applied. The
deadlock is avoided by releasing the lock before pushing a buffer
and reacquiring it when completed.

- Stop drivers calling their own flush method indirectly, it obfuscates code
and it will change soon anyway
- A few more lock_kernel paths temporarily needed in some driver internal
waiting code
- Remove private put_char method that does a write call for one char - we
have that anyway
- Most but not yet all of the termios copy under lock fixing (some has other
dependencies to follow)
- Note a few locking bugs in drivers found in the process
- Kill remaining [ab]users of TIOCG/SSOFTCAR in the driver, these must go to
fix the termios locking

Instead of checking for the BKL in these methods, take it ourselves. That

Thomas Koeller had reported an issue where a device that had been making use
of the UART_BUG_TXEN code in the 8250 driver was mistakenly being caught by
the backup timer test, causing the device to work improperly.
To fix this, tighten the test requirements to enable the backup timer
workaround.
The backup timer is really meant to catch UARTs that don't re-assert the THRE
interrupt. The expectation is that they do initially assert THRE. This patch
clarifies the test.

Russell King noticed this one: We have to avoid replacing B0 when we pick a
baud rate for a "hung up" port. Ugly but the proper fix is in the tty layer
and means changing the tty<->serial interfaces so we will defer that for now.

We try and write the correct speed back but the serial midlayer already
mangles the speed on us and that means if we request B0 we report back B9600
when we should not. For now we'll hack around this in the drivers and serial
code, pending a better long term solution.

The Xilinx 16550 uart core is not a standard 16550 because it uses
word-based addressing rather than byte-based addressing. With
additional properties it is compatible with the open firmware
'ns16550' compatible binding.
This code updates the of_serial driver to handle the reg-offset
and reg-shift properties to enable this core to be used.

I have a sparcstation 20 clone with a lot of on board serial ports.
The serial core code assumes that uarts are assigned contiguously
and that may not be the case when there are multiple zs devices
present. This patch insures that uart chips are placed in front of
keyboard/mouse chips in the port table.

Fixed trivial conflict in include/linux/memory.h due to semaphore header
file change (made irrelevant by the change to mutex).
This patch (as1059) fixes a mistake in the way the serial core
initializes a device's wakeup settings. It should use the accessor
routine instead of relying on a macro producing an lvalue.

None of these files use any of the functionality promised by
asm/semaphore.h. It's possible that they rely on it dragging in some
unrelated header file, but I can't build all these files, so we'll have
fix any build failures as they come up.

Do not use the URXD_CHARRDY bit for polling for new characters. This works
on i.MX1, but on MX31 the datasheet states that this bit should not be
used for polling. On MX27 it is even worse, here we get a bus error when
we access the read FIFO when no character is present.
Instead, use USR2_RDR (receive data ready) bit.

This patch allocates parameter RAM for SMC serial ports without relying on
previous initialisation by a boot loader or a wrapper layer.
SMC parameter RAM on CPM2-based platforms can be allocated anywhere in the
general-purpose areas of the dual-port RAM. The current code relies on the
boot loader to allocate a section of general-purpose CPM RAM and gets the
section address from the device tree.
This patch modifies the device tree address usage to reference the SMC
parameter RAM base pointer instead of a pre-allocated RAM section and
allocates memory from the CPM dual-port RAM when initialising the SMC port.
CPM1-based platforms are not affected.

Since 43cc71eed1, the platform modalias is
prefixed with "platform:". Add MODULE_ALIAS() to the hotpluggable serial
platform drivers, to re-enable auto loading.
NOTE that Kconfig for some of these drivers doesn't allow modular builds, and
thus doesn't match the driver source's unload support. Presumably their
unload code is buggy and/or weakly tested...

The of_serial driver queries the current-speed property and attempts
to use it to register the custom_divisor property of the uart_port.
However, if current-speed is not set, then this code will dereference
a bad pointer. The fix is to only set custom_divisor when a
current-speed property appears in the device tree.

Strange chars appear on the serial port when a printk and a printf
happens at the same time. This is caused by the pdc sending chars while
atmel_console_write (called from printk) is executing
Concurent access of uart and console to the same port leads to corrupted
data to be transmitted, so disable tx dma (PDC) while writing to the
console.

I found a problem related to losing data during pdc transmission in
atmel_serial: connect ttyS1 with ttyS2 using a loopback cable, send 30
byte of packet from one to the other and waiting for 30 byte. On the
other side just read and echo the data received.
We always call atmel_tx_dma() from the tasklet regardless of what interrupt
triggered it.

strikes again"), a bug was fixed that involved converting !x & y to !(x
& y). The code below shows the same pattern, and thus should perhaps be
fixed in the same way.
This is not tested and clearly changes the semantics, so it is only

This header is needed on other architectures as well (namely h8300),
which currently fails to build without this in place. Rather than
duplicating the port definition completely there, just move this to a
common location instead.
This should get h8300 working again for 2.6.25, in addition to the
changes already pushed by Sato-san in -rc2.

This patch is based on the DMA-patch by Chip Coldwell for the AT91/AT32 serial
USARTS, with some tweaks to make it apply neatly on top of the other patches
in this series.
The RX and TX code has been moved to a tasklet and reworked a bit. Instead of
depending on the ENDRX and TIMEOUT bits in CSR, we simply grab as much data as
we can from the DMA buffers. I think this closes a race where the ENDRX bit
is set after we read CSR but before we read RPR, although I haven't confirmed
this.
Similarly, the two TX handlers (ENDTX and TXBUFE) have been combined into one.
Since the current code only uses a single TX buffer, there's no point in
handling those interrupts separately.
This also fixes a DMA sync bug in the original patch.

Split up the interrupt handler of the serial port into a interrupt top-half
and a tasklet.
The goal is to get the interrupt top-half as short as possible to minimize
latencies on interrupts. But the old code also does some calls in the
interrupt handler that are not allowed on preempt-RT in IRQF_NODELAY context.
This handler is executed in this context because of the interrupt sharing with
the timer interrupt. The timer interrupt on Preempt-RT runs in IRQF_NODELAY
context.
The tasklet takes care of handling control status changes, pushing incoming
characters to the tty layer, handling break and other errors. It also handles
pushing TX data into the data register.
Reading the complete receive queue is still done in the top-half because we
never want to miss any incoming character.

When an error happens in probe(), the clocks should be disabled, but
only if the port isn't already used as a console.
In remove(), the port struct shouldn't be freed because it's defined
statically.

If BRGR is zero, the baud rate generator isn't running, so the boot loader
can't have initialized the port.

Replace two instances of barrier() with cpu_relax() since that's the right
thing to do when busy-waiting. This does not actually change anything since
cpu_relax() is defined as barrier() on both ARM and AVR32.

This is a set of changes to implement proper resource management in the
driver, including iomem space reservation and operating on physical
addresses ioremap()ped appropriately using accessory functions rather than
unportable direct assignments.
Some adjustments to code are made to reflect the architecture of the
interface, which is a centrally controlled multiport (or, as referred to
from DEC documentation, a serial line multiplexer, going up to 8 lines
originally) rather than a bundle of separate ports.
Types are changed, where applicable, to specify the width of hardware
registers explicitly. The interrupt handler is now managed in the
->startup() and ->shutdown() calls for consistency with other drivers and
also in preparation to handle the handover from the initial firmware-based
console gracefully.
