0f776dc377 Some big changes this month, headlined by the addition of a new formatted
documentation mechanism based on the Sphinx system. The objectives here
are to make it easier to create better-integrated (and more attractive)
documents while (eventually) dumping our one-of-a-kind, cobbled-together
system for something that is widely used and maintained by others. There's
a fair amount of information what's being done, why, and how to use it in:

   https://lwn.net/Articles/692704/
   https://lwn.net/Articles/692705/

Closer to home, Documentation/kernel-documentation.rst describes how it
 works.

For now, the new system exists alongside the old one; you should soon see
the GPU documentation converted over in the DRM pull and some significant
media conversion work as well. Once all the docs have been moved over and
we're convinced that the rough edges (of which are are a few) have been
smoothed over, the DocBook-based stuff should go away.

Primary credit is to Jani Nikula for doing the heavy lifting to make this
stuff actually work; there has also been notable effort from Markus Heiser,
Daniel Vetter, and Mauro Carvalho Chehab.

Expect a couple of conflicts on the new index.rst file over the course of
the merge window; they are trivially resolvable. That file may be a bit of
a conflict magnet in the short term, but I don't expect that situation to
last for any real length of time.

Beyond that, of course, we have the usual collection of tweaks, updates,
 and typo fixes.

e6e9c9b238 [media] docs-rst: Fix some typos
Those fixes came from patchs from Andrea for the old DocBook
documentation.

As we're removing it on Kernel 4.8, it doesn't make sense to
apply the original patches, but, as the typos were ported
to ReST, let's fix the issues there.

547218864a doc-rst: add an option to ignore DocBooks when generating docs
Sometimes, we want to do a partial build, instead of building
everything. However, right now, if one wants to build just
Sphinx books, it will build also the DocBooks.

Add an option to allow to ignore all DocBooks when building
documentation.

bcdb9040df [media] DocBook: mention the memory type to be set for all streaming I/O
The DMA buffer importing streaming I/O section mentions the memory type
value that has to be set when calling the VIDIOC_REQBUFS ioctl but this
isn't mentioned in neither the Memory Mapping nor User Pointer sections.

A user can know the values by looking at the examples but it's better
to explicitly mention in the documentation, and also makes all sections
about streaming I/O methods more consistent.

bf1ecd2105 cfg80211: Allow cfg80211_connect_result() errors to be distinguished
Previously, the status parameter to cfg80211_connect_result() was
documented as using WLAN_STATUS_UNSPECIFIED_FAILURE (1) when the real
status code for the failure is not known. This value can be used by an
AP (and often is) and as such, user space cannot distinguish between
explicitly rejected authentication/association and not being able to
even try to associate or not receiving a response from the AP.

Add a new inline function, cfg80211_connect_timeout(), to be used when
the driver knows that the connection attempt failed due to a reason
where connection could not be attempt or no response was received from
the AP. The internal functions now allow a negative status value (-1) to
be used as an indication of this special case. This results in the
NL80211_ATTR_TIMED_OUT to be added to the NL80211_CMD_CONNECT event to
allow user space to determine this case was hit. For backwards
compatibility, NL80211_STATUS_CODE with the value
WLAN_STATUS_UNSPECIFIED_FAILURE is still indicated in the event in such
a case.

22cba31bae Documentation/sphinx: add basic working Sphinx configuration and build
Add basic configuration and makefile to build documentation from any
.rst files under Documentation using Sphinx. For starters, there's just
the placeholder index.rst.

At the top level Makefile, hook Sphinx documentation targets alongside
(but independent of) the DocBook toolchain, having both be run on the
various 'make *docs' targets.

All Sphinx processing is placed into Documentation/Makefile.sphinx. Both
that and the Documentation/DocBook/Makefile are now expected to handle
all the documentation targets, explicitly ignoring them if they're not
relevant for that particular toolchain. The changes to the existing
DocBook Makefile are kept minimal.

There is graceful handling of missing Sphinx and rst2pdf (which is
needed for pdf output) by checking for the tool and python module,
respectively, with informative messages to the user.

If the Read the Docs theme (sphinx_rtd_theme) is available, use it, but
otherwise gracefully fall back to the Sphinx default theme, with an
informative message to the user, and slightly less pretty HTML output.

Sphinx can now handle htmldocs, pdfdocs (if rst2pdf is available),
epubdocs and xmldocs targets. The output documents are written into per
output type subdirectories under Documentation/output.

Finally, you can pass options to sphinx-build using the SPHINXBUILD make
variable. For example, 'make SPHINXOPTS=-v htmldocs' for more verbose
output from Sphinx.

This is based on the original work by Jonathan Corbet, but he probably
wouldn't recognize this as his own anymore.

b3daa5ef52 drm: Add helper for DP++ adaptors
Add a helper which aids in the identification of DP dual mode
(aka. DP++) adaptors. There are several types of adaptors
specified: type 1 DVI, type 1 HDMI, type 2 DVI, type 2 HDMI

Type 1 adaptors have a max TMDS clock limit of 165MHz, type 2 adaptors
may go as high as 300MHz and they provide a register informing the
source device what the actual limit is. Supposedly also type 1 adaptors
may optionally implement this register. This TMDS clock limit is the
main reason why we need to identify these adaptors.

Type 1 adaptors provide access to their internal registers and the sink
DDC bus through I2C. Type 2 adaptors provide this access both via I2C
and I2C-over-AUX. A type 2 source device may choose to implement either
of these methods. If a source device implements the I2C-over-AUX
method, then the driver will obviously need specific support for such
adaptors since the port is driven like an HDMI port, but DDC
communication happes over the AUX channel.

This helper should be enough to identify the adaptor type (some
type 1 DVI adaptors may be a slight exception) and the maximum TMDS
clock limit. Another feature that may be available is control over
the TMDS output buffers on the adaptor, possibly allowing for some
power saving when the TMDS link is down.

Other user controllable features that may be available in the adaptors
are downstream i2c bus speed control when using i2c-over-aux, and
some control over the CEC pin. I chose not to provide any helper
functions for those since I have no use for them in i915 at this time.
The rest of the registers in the adaptor are mostly just information,
eg. IEEE OUI, hardware and firmware revision, etc.

v2: Pass adaptor type to helper functions to ease driver implementation
Fix a bunch of typoes (Paulo)
Add DRM_DP_DUAL_MODE_UNKNOWN for the case where we don't (yet) know
    the type (Paulo)
    Reject 0x00 and 0xff DP_DUAL_MODE_MAX_TMDS_CLOCK values (Paulo)
    Adjust drm_dp_dual_mode_detect() type2 vs. type1 detection to
    ease future LSPCON enabling
    Remove the unused DP_DUAL_MODE_LAST_RESERVED define
v3: Fix kernel doc function argument descriptions (Jani)
    s/NONE/UNKNOWN/ in drm_dp_dual_mode_detect() docs
Add kernel doc for enum drm_dp_dual_mode_type
    Actually build the docs
    Fix more typoes
v4: Adjust code indentation of type2 adaptor detection (Shashank)
Add debug messages for failurs cases (Shashank)
v5: EXPORT_SYMBOL(drm_dp_dual_mode_read) (Paulo)

2f37dd131c Staging and IIO driver update for 4.7-rc1
Here's the big staging and iio driver update for 4.7-rc1.

I think we almost broke even with this release, only adding a few more
lines than we removed, which isn't bad overall given that there's a
bunch of new iio drivers added. The Lustre developers seem to have
woken up from their sleep and have been doing a great job in cleaning up
the code and pruning unused or old cruft, the filesystem is almost
 readable :)

Other than that, just a lot of basic coding style cleanups in the churn.
All have been in linux-next for a while with no reported issues.

e705498945 cfg80211: Add option to report the bss entry in connect result
Since cfg80211 maintains separate BSS table entries for APs if the same
BSSID, SSID pair is seen on multiple channels, it is possible that it
can map the current_bss to a BSS entry on the wrong channel. This
current_bss will not get flushed unless disconnected and cfg80211
reports a wrong channel as the associated channel.

Fix this by introducing a new cfg80211_connect_bss() function which is
similar to cfg80211_connect_result(), but it includes an additional
parameter: the bss the STA is connected to. This allows drivers to
provide the exact bss entry that matches the BSS to which the connection
was completed.

c5c6314167 [media] vidioc-dv-timings-cap.xml: explicitly state that pad and reserved should be zeroed
The DV_TIMINGS_CAP documentation didn't state clearly that the pad and
reserved fields should be zeroed by the application. For subdev pad can
be other values as well.

It also mistakenly said that only drivers would have to zero the reserved
field, that's not correct.

57fbcce37b cfg80211: remove enum ieee80211_band
This enum is already perfectly aliased to enum nl80211_band, and
the only reason for it is that we get IEEE80211_NUM_BANDS out of
it. There's no really good reason to not declare the number of
bands in nl80211 though, so do that and remove the cfg80211 one.

We've been accumulating code across the driver that depends on the VBT

5488dc16fd drm: introduce pipe color correction properties
Patch based on a previous series by Shashank Sharma.

This introduces optional properties to enable color correction at the
pipe level. It relies on 3 transformations applied to every pixels
displayed. First a lookup into a degamma table, then a multiplication
of the rgb components by a 3x3 matrix and finally another lookup into
a gamma table.

The following properties can be added to a pipe :
  - DEGAMMA_LUT : blob containing degamma LUT
  - DEGAMMA_LUT_SIZE : number of elements in DEGAMMA_LUT
  - CTM : transformation matrix applied after the degamma LUT
  - GAMMA_LUT : blob containing gamma LUT
  - GAMMA_LUT_SIZE : number of elements in GAMMA_LUT

DEGAMMA_LUT_SIZE and GAMMA_LUT_SIZE are read only properties, set by
the driver to tell userspace applications what sizes should be the
lookup tables in DEGAMMA_LUT and GAMMA_LUT.

A helper is also provided so legacy gamma correction is redirected
through these new properties.

v2: Register LUT size properties as range

v3: Fix round in drm_color_lut_get_value() helper
More docs on how degamma/gamma properties are used

v4: Update contributors

v5: Rename CTM_MATRIX property to CTM (Doh!)
    Add legacy gamma_set atomic helper
Describe CTM/LUT acronyms in the kernel doc

156d7d4120 vga_switcheroo: Add handler flags infrastructure
Allow handlers to declare their capabilities and allow clients to
obtain that information. So far we have these use cases:

* If the handler is able to switch DDC separately, clients need to
probe EDID with drm_get_edid_switcheroo(). We should allow them
to detect a capable handler to ensure this function only gets
  called when needed.

* Likewise if the handler is unable to switch AUX separately, the active
client needs to communicate link training parameters to the inactive
client, which may then skip the AUX handshake and set up its output
with these pre-calibrated values (DisplayPort specification v1.1a,
section 2.5.3.3). Clients need a way to recognize such a situation.

The flags for the radeon_atpx_handler and amdgpu_atpx_handler are
initially set to 0, this can later on be amended with
  handler_flags |= VGA_SWITCHEROO_CAN_SWITCH_DDC;
when a ->switch_ddc callback is added.

06131932c1 [media] media.h: add support for IF-PLL video/sound decoder
Very old hardware may have an analog stage tuner. Those hardware
consists of a PLL that converts a RF signal into IF signals.

Depending on the hardware, those video IF signal can be
decoded directly by the bridge chipset. Most Conexant
chips (bt8x8, cx2388x, etc) have internally the decoders
for that. Yet, even on such hardware, the tuner may have
internally its own TV multi-standard decoder like tda9887.

The same happens with the audio IF signal, where some bridges
are capable of receiving it, while others require an external
IF-PLL sound decoder, like msp3400.

Those external IF-PLL audio and video decoders have their own
I2C address, and use different drivers to handle them. So, they're
mapped as different subdevices on Linux.

Thankfully, all modern hardware comes with an IC chip that
has both the RF and the IF stages on it, being capable of
decoding audio and video IF signals internally.

Yet, as we need to support drivers that can work with either
analog or silicon tuners, we need to add two entity types
for those old hardware.

6aad127d37 [media] v4l2-mc.h: move tuner PAD definitions to this new header
The customer PC hardware can be shipped with lots of different
configurations, as vendors use to replace some of the chips on
their hardware along the time. All drivers that support such
devices are prepared to handle the hardware differences, using
their own auto-probing logic.

They do it in a way that number of inputs and outputs for a given
hardware type doesn't change.

Now that we're adding media controller capabilities to those drivers,
we need to standardize the number of inputs and outputs for each
hardware type, as we want to have a generic function at the V4L2
core that would create the links for the entities that are expected
on such hardware.

Such standard is already there for tuners, but tuner.h is not the
best place to store such data, as we'll need to add definitions also
for analog TV demodulators.

Also, we'll need a place to put a set of MC handling functions. So,
let's create a v4l2-mc.h to store such kind of definitions.

a016af2e70 sound updates for 4.5-rc1
We've had quite busy weeks in this cycle. Looking at ALSA core, the
significant changes are a few fixes wrt timer and sequencer ioctls
that have been revealed by fuzzer recently. Other than that, ASoC
core got a few updates about DAI link handling, but these are rather
 straightforward refactoring.

In drivers scene, ASoC received quite lots of new drivers in addition
to bunch of updates for still ongoing Intel Skylake support and
topology API. HD-audio gained a new HDMI/DP hotplug notification via
component. FireWire got a pile of code refactoring/updates with
 SCS.1x driver integration.

 More highlights are shown below.

[NOTE: this contains also many commits for DRM. This is due to the
pull of drm stable branch into sound tree, as the base of i915 audio
component work for HD-audio. The highlights below don't contain
these DRM changes, as these are supposed to be pulled via drm tree in
  anyway sooner or later.]

 Core
  - Handful fixes to harden ALSA timer and sequencer ioctls against
    races reported by syzkaller fuzzer
  - Irq description string can be unique to each card; only for
    HD-audio for now

 ASoC
  - Conversion of the array of DAI links to a list for supporting
dynamically adding and removing DAI links
  - Topology API enhancements to make everything more component based
and being able to specify PCM links via topology
  - Some more fixes for the topology code, though it is still not final
and ready for enabling in production; we really need to get to the
point where that can be done
  - A pile of changes for Intel SkyLake drivers which hopefully deliver
some useful initial functionality for systems with this chipset,
though there is more work still to come
  - Lots of new features and cleanups for the Renesas drivers
  - ANC support for WM5110
  - New drivers: Imagination Technologies IPs, Atmel class D speaker,
    Cirrus CS47L24 and WM1831, Dialog DA7128, Realtek RT5659 and
RT56156, Rockchip RK3036, TI PC3168A, and AMD ACP
  - Rename PCM1792a driver to be generic pcm179x

 HD-Audio
  - Use audio component for i915 HDMI/DP hotplug handling
  - On-demand binding with i915 driver
  - bdl_pos_adj parameter adjustment for Baytrail controllers
  - Enable power_save_node for CX20722; this shouldn't lead to
    regression, hopefully
  - Kabylake HDMI/DP codec support
  - Quirks for Lenovo E50-80, Dell Latitude E-series, and other Dell
    machines
  - A few code refactoring

 FireWire
  - Lots of code cleanup and refactoring
  - Integrate the support of SCS.1x devices into snd-oxfw driver;
    snd-scs1x driver is obsoleted

 USB-audio
  - Fix possible NULL dereference at disconnection
  - A regression fix for Native Instruments devices

 Misc
  - A few code cleanups of fm801 driver

Merge tag 'sound-4.5-rc1' of git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/tiwai/sound

Pull sound updates from Takashi Iwai:
"We've had quite busy weeks in this cycle.

[ NOTE: this contains also many commits for DRM. This is due to the
pull of drm stable branch into sound tree, as the base of i915 audio
component work for HD-audio. The highlights below don't contain
these DRM changes, as these are supposed to be pulled via drm tree
in anyway sooner or later. ]

  Core:
   - Handful fixes to harden ALSA timer and sequencer ioctls against
     races reported by syzkaller fuzzer
   - Irq description string can be unique to each card; only for
     HD-audio for now

  ASoC:

  HD-Audio:
   - Use audio component for i915 HDMI/DP hotplug handling
   - On-demand binding with i915 driver
   - bdl_pos_adj parameter adjustment for Baytrail controllers
   - Enable power_save_node for CX20722; this shouldn't lead to
     regression, hopefully
   - Kabylake HDMI/DP codec support
   - Quirks for Lenovo E50-80, Dell Latitude E-series, and other Dell
     machines
   - A few code refactoring

  FireWire:
   - Lots of code cleanup and refactoring
   - Integrate the support of SCS.1x devices into snd-oxfw driver;
     snd-scs1x driver is obsoleted

  USB-audio:
   - Fix possible NULL dereference at disconnection
   - A regression fix for Native Instruments devices

  Misc:
   - A few code cleanups of fm801 driver"

e535d74bc5 A relatively boring cycle in the docs tree. There's a few kernel-doc
fixes and various document tweaks.

One patch reaches out of the documentation subtree to fix a comment in
init/do_mounts_rd.c. There didn't seem to be anybody more appropriate to
take that one, so I accepted it.
