Here is the big staging and IIO driver update for 4.18-rc1.
It was delayed as I wanted to make sure the final driver deletions did
not cause any major merge issues, and all now looks good.
There are a lot of patches here, just over 1000. The diffstat summary
shows the major changes here:
1007 files changed, 16828 insertions(+), 227770 deletions(-)
Because of this, we might be close to shrinking the overall kernel
source code size for two releases in a row.
There was loads of work in this release cycle, primarily:
- tons of ks7010 driver cleanups
- lots of mt7621 driver fixes and cleanups
- most driver cleanups
- wilc1000 fixes and cleanups
- lots and lots of IIO driver cleanups and new additions
- debugfs cleanups for all staging drivers
- lots of other staging driver cleanups and fixes, the shortlog
has the full details.
but the big user-visable things here are the removal of 3 chunks of
code:
- ncpfs and ipx were removed on schedule, no one has cared about
this code since it moved to staging last year, and if it needs
to come back, it can be reverted.
- lustre file system is removed. I've ranted at the lustre
developers about once a year for the past 5 years, with no
real forward progress at all to clean things up and get the
code into the "real" part of the kernel. Given that the
lustre developers continue to work on an external tree and try
to port those changes to the in-kernel tree every once in a
while, this whole thing really really is not working out at
all. So I'm deleting it so that the developers can spend the
time working in their out-of-tree location and get things
cleaned up properly to get merged into the tree correctly at a
later date.
Because of these file removals, you will have merge issues on some of
these files (2 in the ipx code, 1 in the ncpfs code, and 1 in the
atomisp driver). Just delete those files, it's a simple merge :)

One of the more common cases of allocation size calculations is finding
the size of a structure that has a zero-sized array at the end, along
with memory for some number of elements for that array. For example:

When calling debugfs functions, there is no need to ever check the
return value. The function can work or not, but the code logic should
never do something different based on this.
Clean up the greybus camera driver by not caring about the value of
debugfs calls. This ends up removing a number of lines of code that
are not needed.

The next patch from Al will sort out the final differences, and we
should be all done.

Here is the "big" staging and IIO driver update for 4.15-rc1.
Lots and lots of little changes, almost all minor code cleanups as the
Outreachy application process happened during this development cycle.
Also happened was a lot of IIO driver activity, and the typec USB code
moving out of staging to drivers/usb (same commits are in the USB tree
on a persistent branch to not cause merge issues.)
Overall, it's a wash, I think we added a few hundred more lines than
removed, but really only a few thousand were modified at all.
All of these have been in linux-next for a while. There might be a
merge issue with Al's vfs tree in the pi433 driver (take his changes,
they are always better), and the media tree with some of the odd atomisp
cleanups (take the media tree's version).

Now that the SPDX tag is in all greybus files, that identifies the
license in a specific and legally-defined manner. So the extra GPL text
wording can be removed as it is no longer needed at all.
This is done on a quest to remove the 700+ different ways that files in
the kernel describe the GPL license text. And there's unneeded stuff
like the address (sometimes incorrect) for the FSF which is never
needed.
No copyright headers or other non-license-description text was removed.

It's good to have SPDX identifiers in all files to make it easier to
audit the kernel tree for correct licenses.
Update the drivers/staging/greybus files files with the correct SPDX
license identifier based on the license text in the file itself. The
SPDX identifier is a legally binding shorthand, which can be used
instead of the full boiler plate text.

Loopback has its own internal method for tracking and timing out
asynchronous operations however previous patches make it possible to use
functionality provided by operation.c to do this instead. Using the code in
operation.c means we can completely subtract the timer, the work-queue, the
kref and the cringe-worthy 'pending' flag. The completion callback
triggered by operation.c will provide an authoritative result code -
including -ETIMEDOUT for asynchronous operations.

Asynchronous operation completion handler's lives are made easier if there
is a generic pointer that can store private data associated with the
operation. This patch adds a pointer field to struct gb_operation and
get/set methods to access that pointer.

Commit 12927835d2 ("greybus: loopback: Add asynchronous bi-directional
support") does what it says on the tin - namely, adds support for
asynchronous bi-directional loopback operations.
What it neglects to do though is increment the per-connection
gb->iteration_count on an asynchronous operation error. This patch fixes
that omission.

Commit d9fb3754ec ("greybus: loopback: Relax locking during loopback
operations") changes the holding of the per-connection mutex to be less
restrictive because at the time of that commit per-connection mutexes were
encapsulated by a per-driver level gb_dev.mutex.
Commit 8e1d6c336d ("greybus: loopback: drop bus aggregate calculation")
on the other hand subtracts the driver level gb_dev.mutex but neglects to
move the mutex back to the place it was prior to commit d9fb3754ec
("greybus: loopback: Relax locking during loopback operations"), as a
result several members of the per connection struct gb_loopback are racy.
The solution is restoring the old location of mutex_unlock(&gb->mutex) as
it was in commit d9fb3754ec ("greybus: loopback: Relax locking during
loopback operations").

This driver is the only one using the deprecated timeval_to_ns()
helper. Changing it from do_gettimeofday() to ktime_get() makes
the code more efficient, more robust against concurrent
settimeofday(), more accurate and lets us get rid of that helper
in the future.

Remove erroneous spi_master_put() after controller deregistration which
would access the already freed spi controller.

Many source files in the tree are missing licensing information, which
makes it harder for compliance tools to determine the correct license.
By default all files without license information are under the default
license of the kernel, which is GPL version 2.
Update the files which contain no license information with the 'GPL-2.0'
SPDX license identifier. The SPDX identifier is a legally binding
shorthand, which can be used instead of the full boiler plate text.
This patch is based on work done by Thomas Gleixner and Kate Stewart and
Philippe Ombredanne.
How this work was done:
Patches were generated and checked against linux-4.14-rc6 for a subset of
the use cases:
- file had no licensing information it it.
- file was a */uapi/* one with no licensing information in it,

Further patches will be generated in subsequent months to fix up cases
where non-standard license headers were used, and references to license
had to be inferred by heuristics based on keywords.
The analysis to determine which SPDX License Identifier to be applied to
a file was done in a spreadsheet of side by side results from of the
output of two independent scanners (ScanCode & Windriver) producing SPDX
tag:value files created by Philippe Ombredanne. Philippe prepared the
base worksheet, and did an initial spot review of a few 1000 files.
The 4.13 kernel was the starting point of the analysis with 60,537 files
assessed. Kate Stewart did a file by file comparison of the scanner
results in the spreadsheet to determine which SPDX license identifier(s)
to be applied to the file. She confirmed any determination that was not
immediately clear with lawyers working with the Linux Foundation.
Criteria used to select files for SPDX license identifier tagging was:
- Files considered eligible had to be source code files.
- Make and config files were included as candidates if they contained >5
lines of source
- File already had some variant of a license header in it (even if <5
lines).
All documentation files were explicitly excluded.
The following heuristics were used to determine which SPDX license
identifiers to apply.
- when both scanners couldn't find any license traces, file was
considered to have no license information in it, and the top level
COPYING file license applied.
For non */uapi/* files that summary was:

- when the two scanners agreed on the detected license(s), that became
the concluded license(s).
- when there was disagreement between the two scanners (one detected a
license but the other didn't, or they both detected different
licenses) a manual inspection of the file occurred.
- In most cases a manual inspection of the information in the file
resulted in a clear resolution of the license that should apply (and
which scanner probably needed to revisit its heuristics).
- When it was not immediately clear, the license identifier was
confirmed with lawyers working with the Linux Foundation.
- If there was any question as to the appropriate license identifier,
the file was flagged for further research and to be revisited later
in time.
In total, over 70 hours of logged manual review was done on the
spreadsheet to determine the SPDX license identifiers to apply to the
source files by Kate, Philippe, Thomas and, in some cases, confirmation
by lawyers working with the Linux Foundation.
Kate also obtained a third independent scan of the 4.13 code base from
FOSSology, and compared selected files where the other two scanners
disagreed against that SPDX file, to see if there was new insights. The
Windriver scanner is based on an older version of FOSSology in part, so
they are related.
Thomas did random spot checks in about 500 files from the spreadsheets
for the uapi headers and agreed with SPDX license identifier in the
files he inspected. For the non-uapi files Thomas did random spot checks
in about 15000 files.
In initial set of patches against 4.14-rc6, 3 files were found to have
copy/paste license identifier errors, and have been fixed to reflect the
correct identifier.
Additionally Philippe spent 10 hours this week doing a detailed manual
inspection and review of the 12,461 patched files from the initial patch
version early this week with:
- a full scancode scan run, collecting the matched texts, detected
license ids and scores
- reviewing anything where there was a license detected (about 500+
files) to ensure that the applied SPDX license was correct
- reviewing anything where there was no detection but the patch license
was not GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note to ensure that the applied
SPDX license was correct
This produced a worksheet with 20 files needing minor correction. This
worksheet was then exported into 3 different .csv files for the
different types of files to be modified.
These .csv files were then reviewed by Greg. Thomas wrote a script to
parse the csv files and add the proper SPDX tag to the file, in the
format that the file expected. This script was further refined by Greg
based on the output to detect more types of files automatically and to
distinguish between header and source .c files (which need different
comment types.) Finally Greg ran the script using the .csv files to
generate the patches.

The V4L2 flash interface allows controlling multiple LEDs through a single
sub-devices if, and only if, these LEDs are of different types. This
approach scales badly for flash controllers that drive multiple flash LEDs
or for LED specific associations. Essentially, the original assumption of a
LED driver chip that drives a single flash LED and an indicator LED is no
longer valid.
Address the matter by registering one sub-device per LED.

We are allocating memory for the v4l2 flash configuration structure and
leak it in the normal path. Just use the stack for this as we do not
use it outside of this function.
Also use IS_ERR() instead of IS_ERR_OR_NULL() to check return value from
v4l2_flash_init() for it never returns NULL.

The cport_quiesce() method is mandatory in the case of
the es2 Greybus hd controller to shutdown the cports on
the es2 controller.
In order to add support of another controller which may not
need to shutdown its cports, make the cport_quiesce() optional,
and check if the controller implement it before to use it.

Change array index from the loop bound variable to loop index.
If a poll file fails to open for any intermediate device, all poll files with
fds of devices from 0 upto that device must be closed in the open_poll_files()

All the device names were being always leaked. Also,
illegal free was being called upon namelist[n] which
was coincidentally NULL. The pointer to dirent structures
must be individually freed before freeing the pointer array.

Add a struct timer_list to struct gb_operation and use that to implement
generic operation timeouts.
This simplifies the synchronous operation handling somewhat while also
providing a generic timeout mechanism that drivers can use for
asynchronous operations.

The loopback driver allows the user to set a minimum delay of up to one
second to be inserted between test iterations (i.e. request
submissions). The delay is currently specified in microseconds and is
implemented using udelay.
Busy looping for long periods is not just anti-social; udelay must not
be used for delays longer than a few milliseconds due to the risk of
integer overflow.
Replace the broken udelay with a usleep_range with a 100 us range for
short delays (< 20 ms) and otherwise revert to using msleep.

Currently we already have two pin configuration related callbacks
available for GPIO chips .set_single_ended() and .set_debounce(). In
future we expect to have even more, which does not scale well if we need
to add yet another callback to the GPIO chip structure for each possible
configuration parameter.
Better solution is to reuse what we already have available in the
generic pinconf.
To support this, we introduce a new .set_config() callback for GPIO
chips. The callback takes a single packed pin configuration value as
parameter. This can then be extended easily beyond what is currently
supported by just adding new types to the generic pinconf enum.
If the GPIO driver is backed up by a pinctrl driver the GPIO driver can
just assign gpiochip_generic_config() (introduced in this patch) to
.set_config and that will take care configuration requests are directed
to the pinctrl driver.
We then convert the existing drivers over .set_config() and finally
remove the .set_single_ended() and .set_debounce() callbacks.

Dummy codec register were initially added while populating dummy codec
mixer controls until module topology parser was available. Now, these
dummy registers are nowhere used and thus can be safely removed.
Since ASoC framework requires a valid callback for both read & write
register APIS, currently empty placeholders are kept to avoid panic.
Later, register mapping logic can be defined:
1. Assuming fixed number of maximum modules connected and register bits
corresponds to basic info of each module OR
2. With a logic to dynamically grow register_cache_size based on codec
modules added/removed.

Uninitialized variable sig_bits was used while configuring stream params
for codec module. These params are used to configure PCM settings for
APBridgeA.
Usually, this is dependent on codec capability and thus populated via
codec dai_driver definition. In our case, it is fixed to 16 based on the
data format, container supported.

mixer control->info call back function checks for -ve values to rebase
min and max values. However, le32 variable is used to fetch values from
GB module FW. Thus negative value checking is not required. Fix this!!

While the timesync protocol was a great idea, it never ended up getting
implemented by any known hardware devices. It's also a bit
"interesting" in how it ties into the platform controller.
So, just remove it for now. It's not needed, no one uses it, and it's a
stumbling block in getting the greybus core code merged out of the
staging tree. If anyone wants it in the future, reverting this patch is
a great place to start from.

Add sanity checks for cport_quiesce and cport_clear before invoking the
callbacks as these function pointers are not required during the host
device registration. This follows the logic implemented elsewhere for
various other function pointers.

Currently the greybus-loopback thread logic spins around waiting for
send_count == iteration_max which on real hardware doesn't make a
difference to us but in simulation is excruciatingly slow, anti-social and
bad manners. Use the existing gb_loopback_async_wait_all() function to gate
continuing when the send_count == iteration_max and go to sleep until
there's something worthwhile to-do.

A system configured without CONFIG_CPUFREQ will return 0 for cpufreq_get().
greybus-timesync can subsequently then do a divide-by-zero as result. This
patch fixes by checking for a zero return value from cpufreq_get() and
setting to a default value of 19.2MHz.

Currently, if info is null, the dev_err message is dereferencing an
uninitialized module pointer. Instead, it should use codec->dev pointer
in dev_err call and better align with other err msg in this function.
Also, ret variable might be used uninitialized in a specific case.
Avoid using it this way.
