Currently support for 64-bit sector_t and blkcnt_t is optional on 32-bit
architectures. These types are required to support block device and/or
file sizes larger than 2 TiB, and have generally defaulted to on for
a long time. Enabling the option only increases the i386 tinyconfig
size by 145 bytes, and many data structures already always use
64-bit values for their in-core and on-disk data structures anyway,
so there should not be a large change in dynamic memory usage either.
Dropping this option removes a somewhat weird non-default config that
has cause various bugs or compiler warnings when actually used.

so additional error logging isn't useful.

The documentation for Co-developed-by is a bit light on details, e.g. it
doesn't explicitly state that:
- Multiple Co-developed-by tags are perfectly acceptable
- Co-developed-by and Signed-off-by must be paired together
- SOB ordering should still follow standard sign-off procedure
Lack of explicit direction has resulted in developers taking a variety
of approaches, often lacking any intent whatsoever, e.g. scattering SOBs
willy-nilly, collecting them all at the end or the beginning, etc...
Tweak the wording to make it clear that multiple co-authors are allowed,
and document the expectation that standard sign-off procedures are to
be followed.
The use of "original author" has also led to confusion as many patches
don't have just one "original" author, e.g. when multiple developers
are involved from the genesis of the patch. Remove all usage of
"original" and instead call out that Co-developed-by is simply a way to
provide attribution in addition to the From tag, i.e. neither tag is
intended to imply anything with regard to who did what.
Provide examples to (hopefully) eliminate any ambiguity.

The instructions for generating patches are given as shell commands
with variables as placeholders. They use the syntax "SRCTREE= linux",
which is wrong for the Bourne shell family (it runs the command
"linux" with the variable "SRCTREE" set to the empty string).
Remove the spaces to avoid confusion. This breaks the pretty alignment
but helps new contributors who try to run the commands as written.

...and use a commit with an obnoxiously long summary in the example to
make it abundantly clear that keeping the tag on a single line takes
priority over wrapping at 75 columns. Without the explicit exemption,
one might assume splitting the tag is acceptable, even encouraged, e.g.
due to being conditioned by checkpatch's line length warning.
Per Stephen's scripts[1] and implied by commit bf4daf12a9 ("checkpatch:
avoid some commit message long line warnings"), splitting the 'Fixes:'
tag across multiple lines is a no-no, presumably because parsing multi-
line tags is unnecessarily painful.

The original MODULE_LICENSE string for kernel modules licensed under the
GPL v2 (only / or later) was simply "GPL", which was - and still is -
completely sufficient for the purpose of module loading and checking
whether the module is free software or proprietary.
In January 2003 this was changed with commit 3344ea3ad4b7 ("[PATCH]
MODULE_LICENSE and EXPORT_SYMBOL_GPL support"). This commit can be found in
the history git repository which holds the 1:1 import of Linus' bitkeeper
repository:

The main intention of the patch was to refuse linking proprietary modules
against symbols exported with EXPORT_SYMBOL_GPL() at module load time.
As a completely undocumented side effect it also introduced the distinction
between "GPL" and "GPL v2" MODULE_LICENSE() strings:
* "GPL" [GNU Public License v2 or later]
* "GPL v2" [GNU Public License v2]
* "GPL and additional rights" [GNU Public License v2 rights and more]
* "Dual BSD/GPL" [GNU Public License v2
* or BSD license choice]
* "Dual MPL/GPL" [GNU Public License v2
* or Mozilla license choice]
This distinction was and still is wrong in several aspects:
1) It broke all modules which were using the "GPL" string in the
MODULE_LICENSE() already and were licensed under GPL v2 only.
A quick license scan over the tree at that time shows that at least 480
out of 1484 modules have been affected by this change back then. The
number is probably way higher as this was just a quick check for
clearly identifiable license information.
There was exactly ONE instance of a "GPL v2" module license string in
the kernel back then - drivers/net/tulip/xircom_tulip_cb.c which
otherwise had no license information at all. There is no indication
that the change above is any way related to this driver. The change
happend with the 2.4.11 release which was on Oct. 9 2001 - so quite
some time before the above commit. Unfortunately there is no trace on
the intertubes to any discussion of this.
2) The dual licensed strings became ill defined as well because following
the "GPL" vs. "GPL v2" distinction all dual licensed (or additional
rights) MODULE_LICENSE strings would either require those dual licensed
modules to be licensed under GPL v2 or later or just be unspecified for
the dual licensing case. Neither choice is coherent with the GPL
distinction.
Due to the lack of a proper changelog and no real discussion on the patch
submission other than a few implementation details, it's completely unclear
why this distinction was introduced at all. Other than the comment in the
module header file exists no documentation for this at all.
From a license compliance and license scanning POV this distinction is a
total nightmare.
As of 5.0-rc2 2873 out of 9200 instances of MODULE_LICENSE() strings are
conflicting with the actual license in the source code (either SPDX or
license boilerplate/reference). A comparison between the scan of the
history tree and a scan of current Linus tree shows to the extent that the
git rename detection over Linus tree grafted with the history tree is
halfways complete that almost none of the files which got broken in 2003
have been cleaned up vs. the MODULE_LICENSE string. So subtracting those
480 known instances from the conflicting 2800 of today more than 25% of the
module authors got it wrong and it's a high propability that a large
portion of the rest just got it right by chance.
There is no value for the module loader to convey the detailed license
information as the only decision to be made is whether the module is free
software or not.
The "and additional rights", "BSD" and "MPL" strings are not conclusive
license information either. So there is no point in trying to make the GPL
part conclusive and exact. As shown above it's already non conclusive for
dual licensing and incoherent with a large portion of the module source.
As an unintended side effect this distinction causes a major headache for
license compliance, license scanners and the ongoing effort to clean up the
license mess of the kernel.
Therefore remove the well meant, but ill defined, distinction between "GPL"
and "GPL v2" and document that:
- "GPL" and "GPL v2" both express that the module is licensed under GPLv2
(without a distinction of 'only' and 'or later') and is therefore kernel
license compliant.
- None of the MODULE_LICENSE strings can be used for expressing or
determining the exact license
- Their sole purpose is to decide whether the module is free software or
not.
Add a MODULE_LICENSE subsection to the license rule documentation as well.

In emacs 23.1 support for directory-local variables was added (see also
https://lists.gnu.org/archive/html/info-gnu-emacs/2009-07/msg00000.html).
Simplify the settings in coding-style.rst by using that feature.
Additionally, do not inherit any settings from emacs' linux coding style
to minimize dependencies on the version of emacs that is being used.
I have verified with several large and nontrivial kernel source files
that the new settings format code according to what checkpatch expects.

This series should also help the efforts to support compiling the kernel

As it was originally worded, this paragraph requires maintainers to
enforce the code of conduct, or face potential repercussions. It sends
the wrong message, when really we just want maintainers to be part of
the solution and not violate the code of conduct themselves.
Removing it doesn't limit our ability to enforce the code of conduct,
and we can still encourage maintainers to help maintain high standards
for the level of discourse in their subsystem.

There was a typo in adding-syscalls.rst that could mislead developers
to add a C filename in a makefile instead of an object filename.
This error, while not keeping developers from contributing could slow

guidelines have demonstrated success in other projects and other areas
of the kernel.

Meelis Roos reported a {menu,n}config regression:
"I have libncurses devel package installed in the default system
location (as do 99%+ on actual developers probably) and in this
case, pkg-config is useless. pkg-config is needed only when
libraries and headers are installed in non-default locations but
it is bad to require installation of pkg-config on all the machines
where make menuconfig would be possibly run."
For {menu,n}config, do not use pkg-config if it is not installed.
For {g,x}config, keep checking pkg-config since we really rely on it
for finding the installation paths of the required packages.

The documentation and TOCs are organized in a manner of a tree. Adding a TOC to
the root, which refers to a file which is located in a subfolder forms a
grid. Those TOCs are a bit confusing and thats why we get additional error
messages while building partial documentation::

Various architectures fail to build properly with older versions of the
gcc compiler.

Each of 'make {menu,n,g,x}config' uses (needs) pkg-config to make sure
that other required files are present and to determine build flags
settings, but none of these check that pkg-config itself is present.
Add a check for all 4 of these targets and update
Documentation/process/changes.rst to mention 'pkg-config'.

Small tweaks to the Maintainer PGP guide:
- Use --quick-addkey command that is compatible between GnuPG-2.2 and
GnuPG-2.1 (which many people still have)
- Add a note about the Nitrokey program
- Warn that some devices can't change the passphrase before there are
keys on the card (specifically, Nitrokeys)
- Link to the GnuPG wiki page about gpg-agent forwarding over ssh

clang-format is a tool to format C/C++/... code according to a set of
rules and heuristics. Like most tools, it is not perfect nor covers
every single case, but it is good enough to be helpful.
In particular, it is useful for quickly re-formatting blocks of code
automatically, for reviewing full files in order to spot coding style
mistakes, typos and possible improvements. It is also handy for sorting
``#includes``, for aligning variables and macros, for reflowing text and
other similar tasks. It also serves as a teaching tool/guide for
newcomers.
The tool itself has been already included in the repositories of popular
Linux distributions for a long time. The rules in this file are
intended for clang-format >= 4, which is easily available in most
distributions.
This commit adds the configuration file that contains the rules that the
tool uses to know how to format the code according to the kernel coding
style. This gives us several advantages:
* clang-format works out of the box with reasonable defaults;
avoiding that everyone has to re-do the configuration.
* Everyone agrees (eventually) on what is the most useful default
configuration for most of the kernel.
* If it becomes commonplace among kernel developers, clang-format
may feel compelled to support us better. They already recognize
the Linux kernel and its style in their documentation and in one
of the style sub-options.
Some of clang-format's features relevant for the kernel are:
* Uses clang's tooling support behind the scenes to parse and rewrite
the code. It is not based on ad-hoc regexps.
* Supports reasonably well the Linux kernel coding style.
* Fast enough to be used at the press of a key.
* There are already integrations (either built-in or third-party)
for many common editors used by kernel developers (e.g. vim,
emacs, Sublime, Atom...) that allow you to format an entire file
or, more usefully, just your selection.
* Able to parse unified diffs -- you can, for instance, reformat
only the lines changed by a git commit.
* Able to reflow text comments as well.
* Widely supported and used by hundreds of developers in highly
complex projects and organizations (e.g. the LLVM project itself,
Chromium, WebKit, Google, Mozilla...). Therefore, it will be
supported for a long time.

Tidy the naming convention for compat syscall subs. Hints which describe
the purpose of the stub go in front and receive a double underscore to
denote that they are generated on-the-fly by the COMPAT_SYSCALL_DEFINEx()
macro.
For the generic case, this means:

Incremental linking is gone, so rename built-in.o to built-in.a, which
is the usual extension for archive files.
This patch does two things, first is a simple search/replace:
git grep -l 'built-in\.o' | xargs sed -i 's/built-in\.o/built-in\.a/g'
The second is to invert nesting of nested text manipulations to avoid
filtering built-in.a out from libs-y2:

The syscall entry points to the kernel defined by SYSCALL_DEFINEx()
and COMPAT_SYSCALL_DEFINEx() should only be called from userspace
through kernel entry points, but not from the kernel itself. This
will allow cleanups and optimizations to the entry paths *and* to
the parts of the kernel code which currently need to pretend to be
userspace in order to make use of syscalls.

With the addition of SPDX patchset, the contents of COPYING file
is now duplicated at two other files under LICENSE:
LICENSES/preferred/GPL-2.0
LICENSES/exceptions/Linux-syscall-note
It is easy to check that the contents of the licence written on
those files are identical with COPYING using:

and parser of Kconfig are now built from real .l and .y sources.
So, flex and bison are the requirement for building the kernel.
Both of them (unlike gperf) have been stable for a long time. This
change has been tested several weeks in linux-next, and I did not
receive any problem report about this.

This guide is an adapted version of the more general "Protecting Code
Integrity" guide written and maintained by The Linux Foundation IT for
use with open-source projects. It provides the oft-lacking guidance on
the following topics:
- how to properly protect one's PGP keys to minimize the risks of them
being stolen and used maliciously to impersonate a kernel developer
- how to configure Git to properly use GnuPG
- when and how to use PGP with Git
- how to verify fellow Linux Kernel developer identities
I believe this document should live with the rest of the documentation
describing proper processes one should follow when participating in
kernel development. Placing it in a wiki on some place like kernel.org
would be insufficient for a number of reasons -- primarily, because only
a relatively small subset of maintainers have accounts on kernel.org,
but also because even those who do rarely remember that such wiki
exists. Keeping it with the rest of in-kernel docs should hopefully give
it more visibility, but also help keep it up-to-date as tools and
processes evolve.

In Linux build system convention, pre-generated files are version-
controlled with a "_shipped" suffix. During the kernel building,
they are simply shipped (copied) removing the suffix.
This approach can reduce external tool dependency for the kernel build,
but it is tedious to manually regenerate such artifacts from developers'
point of view. (We need to do "make REGENERATE_PARSERS=1" every time
we touch real source files such as *.l, *.y)
Some months ago, I sent out RFC patches to run flex, bison, and gperf
during the build.
In the review and test, Linus noticed gperf-3.1 had changed the lookup
function prototype. Then, the use of gperf in kernel was entirely
removed by commit bb3290d916 ("Remove gperf usage from toolchain").
This time, I tested several versions of flex and bison, and I was not
hit by any compatibility issue except a flaw in flex-2.6.3; if you
generate lexer for dtc and genksyms with flex-2.6.3, you will see
"yywrap redefined" warning. This was not intentional, but a bug,
fixed by flex-2.6.4. Otherwise, both flex and bison look fairly
stable for a long time.
This commit prepares some build rules to remove the _shipped files.
Also, document minimal requirement for flex and bison.
Rationale for the minimal version:
The -Wmissing-prototypes option of GCC warns "no previous prototype"
for lexers generated by flex-2.5.34 or older, so I chose 2.5.35 as the
required version for flex. Flex-2.5.35 was released in 2008. Bison
looks more stable. I did not see any problem with bison-2.0, released
in 2004. I did not test bison-1.x, but bison-2.0 should be old enough.
