Like many i2c-hid touchscreen controllers, the Elan eKTH6915 has a
reset GPIO hooked up to it. According to the datasheet, the way we're
supposed to turn the touchscreen on is:
1. Turn on the 3.3V supply.
2. Turn on the IO supply. It's OK if this is hardwired to the 3.3V
supply, but if it's not then it must be turned on _after_ the 3.3V
supply.
3. Wait >= 1 ms.
4. Deassert the reset GPIO (reset GPIO is active low, so there would
be a leakage path if this was deasserted _before_ the IO supply).
5. Wait 300 ms.
Much of the above can be handled by the generic i2c-hid-of driver, but
the "reset" GPIO is not supported by that driver. Thus we'll do the
same as we did for Goodix and add a new tiny driver that uses the
i2c-hid core.
NOTE: support for this new touchscreen could theorically fit into the
Goodix driver. I've made it a separate driver because the Elan driver
supports _two_ regulators and it's unclear exactly how that would fit
in with commit 18eeef46d3 ("HID: i2c-hid: goodix: Tie the reset line
to true state of the regulator").

5.18-rc1. For the most part it's been a quiet development cycle for the
USB core, but there are the usual "hot spots" of development activity.
Included in here are:
- Thunderbolt driver updates:
- fixes for devices without displayport adapters
- lane bonding support and improvements
- other minor changes based on device testing
- dwc3 gadget driver changes. It seems this driver will never
be finished given that the IP core is showing up in zillions
of new devices and each implementation decides to do something
different with it...
- uvc gadget driver updates as more devices start to use and
rely on this hardware as well
- usb_maxpacket() api changes to remove an unneeded and unused
parameter.
- usb-serial driver device id updates and small cleanups
- typec cleanups and fixes based on device testing
- device tree updates for usb properties
- lots of other small fixes and driver updates.
All of these have been in linux-next for weeks with no reported

Keychron's C-series and K-series of keyboards copy the vendor and
product IDs of an Apple keyboard, but only behave like that device when
set to "Mac" mode. In "Windows" mode, the Fn key doesn't generate a
scancode, so it's impossible to use the F1-F12 keys when fnmode is set
to its default value of 1.
To fix this, make fnmode default to the new value of 3, which behaves
like fnmode=2 for Keychron keyboards and like fnmode=1 for actual Apple
keyboards. This way, Keychron devices are fully usable in both "Windows"
and "Mac" modes, while behavior is unchanged for everything else.

The third argument of usb_maxpacket(): in_out has been deprecated
because it could be derived from the second argument (e.g. using
usb_pipeout(pipe)).
N.B. function usb_maxpacket() was made variadic to accommodate the
transition from the old prototype with three arguments to the new one
with only two arguments (so that no renaming is needed). The variadic
argument is to be removed once all users of usb_maxpacket() get
migrated.

We need to support parsing the HID device in both the Vivaldi and the
Hammer drivers so that we can properly expose the function row physmap
to userspace when a hammer device uses a vivaldi keyboard layout for the
function row keys. Extract the feature mapping logic from the vivaldi
driver into an hid specific vivaldi library so we can use it from both
HID drivers.
To allow more code sharing we mandate that vivaldi data must be placed
at the very beginning of the driver data attached to the HID device
instance.

HID_QUIRK_INVERT is kind of complex to deal with and was bogus.
Furthermore, it didn't make sense to use a global per struct hid_device
quirk for something dynamic as the current state.
Store the current tool information in the report itself, and re-order
the processing of the fields to enforce having all the tablet "state"
fields before getting to In Range and other input fields.
This way, we now have all the information whether a tool is present
or not while processing In Range.
This new behavior enforces that only one tool gets forwarded to userspace
at the same time, and that if either eraser or invert is set, we enforce
BTN_TOOL_RUBBER.
Note that the release of the previous tool now happens in its own EV_SYN
report so userspace doesn't get confused by having 2 tools.
These changes are tested in the following hid-tools regression tests:

Now that we have a list of fields/usages by priority order,
walk through that list to process the inputs instead of using the
order provided by the manufacturer.
Note that this changes the way we update the values in the struct
hid_field:
Previously, once a field was processed, we updated the new values.
Now we need to wait for the entire report to be processed to update
the values.
I don't think it will be an issue: because we were relying on the device
ordering, there were no guarantees to have a field stored before an other.
Which is why we introduced .report() in drivers to have those values
updated.

we build a list of input fields (and usage_index) that is ordered based
on a usage priority.
Changing the usage priority allows to re-order the processed list, meaning
that we can enforce some usages to be process before others.
For instance, before processing InRange in the HID tablets, we need to
know if we are using the eraser (side or button). Enforcing a higher
(lower number) priority for Invert allows to force the input stack to
process that field before.

example when device is disconnected.
To fix it let's switch to managed version of adding sysfs attributes which
will ensure that they are destroyed when the driver is unbound.

The function key mapping for the Magic Keyboard first generation (2007,

one was used instead.
This caused two main issues:
- The F5 and F6 keys were sending KEY_KBDILLUMDOWN and KEY_KBDILLUMUP;
however, the keyboard is not backlited.
- The keyboard has the APPLE_NUMLOCK_EMULATION quirk with F6 set as
the KEY_NUMLOCK key by "powerbook_numlock_keys". However, because F6
was mapped to KEY_KBDILLUMUP by the default mapping it was not
possible to switch the numlock status.

not possible to disable it without connecting another keyboard.

For the same reason we should skip the first byte of the buffer when

formatting the transfer buffer based on its separate report ID argument

I'm was on the receiving end of a lockdep splat from this driver and after
scratching my head I couldn't be entirely sure it was a false positive
given we would also have to think about whether the regulator locking is
safe (since the notifier is called whilst holding regulator locks which
are also needed for regulator_is_enabled() ).
Regardless of whether it is a real bug or not, the mutex isn't needed.
We can use reference counting tricks instead to avoid races with the
notifier calls.
The observed splat follows:
------------------------------------------------------
kworker/u16:3/127 is trying to acquire lock:
ffff00008021fb20 (&ihid_goodix->regulator_mutex){+.+.}-{4:4}, at: ihid_goodix_vdd_notify+0x30/0x94
but task is already holding lock:
ffff0000835c60c0 (&(&rdev->notifier)->rwsem){++++}-{4:4}, at: blocking_notifier_call_chain+0x30/0x70
which lock already depends on the new lock.
the existing dependency chain (in reverse order) is:
-> #1 (&(&rdev->notifier)->rwsem){++++}-{4:4}:

Seeing as all of the standalone Apple ISO keyboards since about 2008

If we ever see a touch report with contact count data we initialize
several variables used to read the contact count in the pre-report
phase. These variables are never reset if we process a report which
doesn't contain a contact count, however. This can cause the pre-
report function to trigger a read of arbitrary memory (e.g. NULL
if we're lucky) and potentially crash the driver.
This commit restores resetting of the variables back to default
"none" values that were used prior to the commit mentioned
below.

AES hardware may internally re-classify a contact that it thought was
intentional as a palm. Intentional contacts are reported as "down" with
the confidence bit set. When this re-classification occurs, however, the
state transitions to "up" with the confidence bit cleared. This kind of
transition appears to be legal according to Microsoft docs, but we do
not handle it correctly. Because the confidence bit is clear, we don't
call `wacom_wac_finger_slot` and update userspace. This causes hung
touches that confuse userspace and interfere with pen arbitration.
This commit adds a special case to ignore the confidence flag if a contact
is reported as removed. This ensures we do not leave a hung touch if one
of these re-classification events occured. Ideally we'd have some way to
also let userspace know that the touch has been re-classified as a palm
and needs to be canceled, but that's not possible right now :)

These two values go hand-in-hand and must be valid for the driver to
behave correctly. We are currently lazy about updating the values and
rely on the "expected" code flow to take care of making sure they're
valid at the point they're needed. The "expected" flow changed somewhat
with commit f8b6a74719 ("HID: wacom: generic: Support multiple tools
per report"), however. This led to problems with the DTH-2452 due (in
part) to *all* contacts being fully processed -- even those past the
expected contact count. Specifically, the received count gets reset to
0 once all expected fingers are processed, but not the expected count.
The rest of the contacts in the report are then *also* processed since
now the driver thinks we've only processed 0 of N expected contacts.
Later commits such as 7fb0413baa (HID: wacom: Use "Confidence" flag to
prevent reporting invalid contacts) worked around the DTH-2452 issue by
skipping the invalid contacts at the end of the report, but this is not
a complete fix. The confidence flag cannot be relied on when a contact
is removed (see the following patch), and dealing with that condition
re-introduces the DTH-2452 issue unless we also address this contact
count laziness. By resetting expected and received counts at the same
time we ensure the driver understands that there are 0 more contacts
expected in the report. Similarly, we also make sure to reset the
received count if for some reason we're out of sync in the pre-report
phase.

uhid has to run hid_add_device() from workqueue context while allowing
parallel use of the userspace API (which is protected with ->devlock).
But hid_add_device() can fail. Currently, that is handled by immediately
destroying the associated HID device, without using ->devlock - but if
there are concurrent requests from userspace, that's wrong and leads to
NULL dereferences and/or memory corruption (via use-after-free).
Fix it by leaving the HID device as-is in the worker. We can clean it up
later, either in the UHID_DESTROY command handler or in the ->release()

Untangling it all requres a lot of changes in HID, so for now let's

Currently, the table that stores information about the connected hidraw
devices has a mutex to prevent concurrent hidraw users to manipulate the
hidraw table (e.g. delete an entry) while someone is trying to use
the table (e.g. issuing an ioctl to the device), preventing the kernel
to referencing a NULL pointer. However, since that every user that wants
to access the table for both manipulating it and reading it content,
this prevents concurrent access to the table for read-only operations
for different or the same device (e.g. two hidraw ioctls can't happen at
the same time, even if they are completely unrelated).
This proves to be a bottleneck and gives performance issues when using
multiple HID devices at same time, like VR kits where one can have two
controllers, the headset and some tracking sensors.
To improve the performance, replace the table mutex with a read-write
semaphore, enabling multiple threads to issue parallel syscalls to
multiple devices at the same time while protecting the table for
concurrent modifications.

before allowing a driver that makes this assumption to claim it.

The wacom driver accepts devices of more than just USB types, but some
code paths can cause problems if the device being controlled is not a
USB device due to a lack of checking. Add the needed checks to ensure
that the USB device accesses are only happening on a "real" USB device,
and not one on some other bus.

A number of HID drivers already call hid_is_using_ll_driver() but only
for the detection of if this is a USB device or not. Make this more
obvious by creating hid_is_usb() and calling the function that way.
Also converts the existing hid_is_using_ll_driver() functions to use the
new call.

Add a HID_QUIRK_NO_INIT_REPORTS quirk for the
Microsoft Surface 3 (non pro) type-cover.
Trying to init the reports seems to confuse the type-cover and
causes 2 issues:
1. Despite hid-multitouch sending the command to switch the
touchpad to multitouch mode, it keeps sending events on the
mouse emulation interface.
2. The touchpad completely stops sending events after a reboot.
Adding the HID_QUIRK_NO_INIT_REPORTS quirk fixes both issues.

In hid_magicmouse, if the user has set scroll_speed to a value between
55 and 63 and scrolls seven times in quick succession, the
step_hr variable in the magicmouse_emit_touch function becomes 0.
That causes a division by zero further down in the function when
it does `step_x_hr /= step_hr`.
To reproduce, create `/etc/modprobe.d/hid_magicmouse.conf` with the
following content:
```
options hid_magicmouse scroll_acceleration=1 scroll_speed=55
```
Then reboot, connect a Magic Mouse and scroll seven times quickly.
The system will freeze for a minute, and after that `dmesg` will
confirm that a division by zero occurred.
Enforce a minimum of 1 for the variable so the high resolution
step count can never reach 0 even at maximum scroll acceleration.

When a scancode is manually remapped that previously was not handled as
key, then the old usage type was incorrectly reused.
This caused issues on a "04b3:301b IBM Corp. SK-8815 Keyboard" which has
marked some of its keys with an invalid HID usage. These invalid usage
keys are being ignored since support for USB programmable buttons was
added.
The scancodes are however remapped explicitly by the systemd hwdb to the
keycodes that are printed on the physical buttons. During this mapping
step the existing usage is retrieved which will be found with a default
type of 0 (EV_SYN) instead of EV_KEY.
The events with the correct code but EV_SYN type are not forwarded to
userspace.
This also leads to a kernel oops when trying to print the report descriptor
via debugfs. hid_resolv_event() tries to resolve a EV_SYN event with an
EV_KEY code which leads to an out-of-bounds access in the EV_SYN names
array.

The HID descriptor of many of Wacom's touch input devices include a
"Confidence" usage that signals if a particular touch collection contains
useful data. The driver does not look at this flag, however, which causes
even invalid contacts to be reported to userspace. A lucky combination of
kernel event filtering and device behavior (specifically: contact ID 0 ==
invalid, contact ID >0 == valid; and order all data so that all valid
contacts are reported before any invalid contacts) spare most devices from
any visibly-bad behavior.
The DTH-2452 is one example of an unlucky device that misbehaves. It uses
ID 0 for both the first valid contact and all invalid contacts. Because
we report both the valid and invalid contacts, the kernel reports that
contact 0 first goes down (valid) and then goes up (invalid) in every
report. This causes ~100 clicks per second simply by touching the screen.
This patch inroduces new `confidence` flag in our `hid_data` structure.
The value is initially set to `true` at the start of a report and can be
set to `false` if an invalid touch usage is seen.

The end goal of the current buffer overflow detection work[0] is to gain
full compile-time and run-time coverage of all detectable buffer overflows
seen via array indexing or memcpy(), memmove(), and memset(). The str*()
family of functions already have full coverage.
While much of the work for these changes have been on-going for many
releases (i.e. 0-element and 1-element array replacements, as well as
avoiding false positives and fixing discovered overflows[1]), this series
contains the foundational elements of several related buffer overflow
detection improvements by providing new common helpers and FORTIFY_SOURCE
changes needed to gain the introspection required for compiler visibility
into array sizes. Also included are a handful of already Acked instances
using the helpers (or related clean-ups), with many more waiting at the
ready to be taken via subsystem-specific trees[2]. The new helpers are:
- struct_group() for gaining struct member range introspection.
- memset_after() and memset_startat() for clearing to the end of structures.
- DECLARE_FLEX_ARRAY() for using flex arrays in unions or alone in structs.
Also included is the beginning of the refactoring of FORTIFY_SOURCE to
support memcpy() introspection, fix missing and regressed coverage under
GCC, and to prepare to fix the currently broken Clang support. Finishing
this work is part of the larger series[0], but depends on all the false
positives and buffer overflow bug fixes to have landed already and those
that depend on this series to land.
As part of the FORTIFY_SOURCE refactoring, a set of both a compile-time
and run-time tests are added for FORTIFY_SOURCE and the mem*()-family
functions respectively. The compile time tests have found a legitimate
(though corner-case) bug[6] already.
Please note that the appearance of "panic" and "BUG" in the
FORTIFY_SOURCE refactoring are the result of relocating existing code,
and no new use of those code-paths are expected nor desired.
Finally, there are two tree-wide conversions for 0-element arrays and
flexible array unions to gain sane compiler introspection coverage that
result in no known object code differences.
After this series (and the changes that have now landed via netdev
and usb), we are very close to finally being able to build with
-Warray-bounds and -Wzero-length-bounds. However, due corner cases in
GCC[3] and Clang[4], I have not included the last two patches that turn
on these options, as I don't want to introduce any known warnings to
the build. Hopefully these can be solved soon.

Merge tag 'overflow-v5.16-rc1' of git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/kees/linux
Pull overflow updates from Kees Cook:
"The end goal of the current buffer overflow detection work[0] is to
gain full compile-time and run-time coverage of all detectable buffer
overflows seen via array indexing or memcpy(), memmove(), and
memset(). The str*() family of functions already have full coverage.
While much of the work for these changes have been on-going for many
releases (i.e. 0-element and 1-element array replacements, as well as
avoiding false positives and fixing discovered overflows[1]), this
series contains the foundational elements of several related buffer
overflow detection improvements by providing new common helpers and
FORTIFY_SOURCE changes needed to gain the introspection required for
compiler visibility into array sizes. Also included are a handful of
already Acked instances using the helpers (or related clean-ups), with
many more waiting at the ready to be taken via subsystem-specific
trees[2].
The new helpers are:
- struct_group() for gaining struct member range introspection
- memset_after() and memset_startat() for clearing to the end of
structures
- DECLARE_FLEX_ARRAY() for using flex arrays in unions or alone in
structs
Also included is the beginning of the refactoring of FORTIFY_SOURCE to
support memcpy() introspection, fix missing and regressed coverage
under GCC, and to prepare to fix the currently broken Clang support.
Finishing this work is part of the larger series[0], but depends on
all the false positives and buffer overflow bug fixes to have landed
already and those that depend on this series to land.
As part of the FORTIFY_SOURCE refactoring, a set of both a
compile-time and run-time tests are added for FORTIFY_SOURCE and the
mem*()-family functions respectively. The compile time tests have
found a legitimate (though corner-case) bug[6] already.
Please note that the appearance of "panic" and "BUG" in the
FORTIFY_SOURCE refactoring are the result of relocating existing code,
and no new use of those code-paths are expected nor desired.
Finally, there are two tree-wide conversions for 0-element arrays and
flexible array unions to gain sane compiler introspection coverage
that result in no known object code differences.
After this series (and the changes that have now landed via netdev and
usb), we are very close to finally being able to build with
-Warray-bounds and -Wzero-length-bounds.
However, due corner cases in GCC[3] and Clang[4], I have not included
the last two patches that turn on these options, as I don't want to
introduce any known warnings to the build. Hopefully these can be
solved soon"

There are a lot of warnings due to unused protocol constants, but I believe
it's good to leave them in the sources for documentation purposes for further
development.
Switch them over from static conts to macros to avoid the warnings.

The wait_for_completion_timeout function returns 0 if timed out or a
positive value if completed. Hence, "less than zero" comparison always
misses timeouts and doesn't kill the URB as it should, leading to
re-sending it while it is active.

The previous commit fixed handling of incomplete packets but broke error
handling: offsetof returns an unsigned value (size_t), but when compared
against the signed return value, the return value is interpreted as if
it were unsigned, so negative return values are never less than the
offset.
To make the code easier to read, calculate the minimal packet length
once and separately, and assign it to a signed int variable to eliminate
unsigned math and the need for type casts. It then becomes immediately
obvious how the actual data length is calculated and why the return
value cannot be less than the minimal length.

The helper function devm_add_action_or_reset() will internally
call devm_add_action(), and if devm_add_action() fails then it will
execute the action mentioned and return the error code. So
use devm_add_action_or_reset() instead of devm_add_action()
to simplify the error handling, reduce the code.

The size of the critical section in this function appears to be larger
than necessary. The `wacom_udev_list_lock` exists to ensure that one
interface cannot begin checking if a shared object exists while a second
interface is doing the same (otherwise both could determine that no
object exists yet and create their own independent objects rather than
sharing just one). It should be safe for the critical section to end
once a fresly-allocated shared object would be found by other threads
(i.e., once it has been added to `wacom_udev_list`, which is looped
over by `wacom_get_hdev_data`).
This commit is a necessary pre-requisite for a later change to swap the
use of `devm_add_action` with `devm_add_action_or_reset`, which would
otherwise deadlock in its error case.
