543ade1fc9 [PATCH] Streamline generic_file_* interfaces and filemap cleanups
This patch cleans up generic_file_*_read/write() interfaces.  Christoph
Hellwig gave me the idea for this clean ups.

In a nutshell, all filesystems should set .aio_read/.aio_write methods and use
do_sync_read/ do_sync_write() as their .read/.write methods.  This allows us
to cleanup all variants of generic_file_* routines.

Final available interfaces:

generic_file_aio_read() - read handler
generic_file_aio_write() - write handler
generic_file_aio_write_nolock() - no lock write handler

__generic_file_aio_write_nolock() - internal worker routine

9361401eb7 [PATCH] BLOCK: Make it possible to disable the block layer [try #6]
Make it possible to disable the block layer.  Not all embedded devices require
it, some can make do with just JFFS2, NFS, ramfs, etc - none of which require
the block layer to be present.

This patch does the following:

 (*) Introduces CONFIG_BLOCK to disable the block layer, buffering and blockdev
     support.

 (*) Adds dependencies on CONFIG_BLOCK to any configuration item that controls
     an item that uses the block layer.  This includes:

     (*) Block I/O tracing.

     (*) Disk partition code.

     (*) All filesystems that are block based, eg: Ext3, ReiserFS, ISOFS.

     (*) The SCSI layer.  As far as I can tell, even SCSI chardevs use the
     	 block layer to do scheduling.  Some drivers that use SCSI facilities -
     	 such as USB storage - end up disabled indirectly from this.

     (*) Various block-based device drivers, such as IDE and the old CDROM
     	 drivers.

     (*) MTD blockdev handling and FTL.

     (*) JFFS - which uses set_bdev_super(), something it could avoid doing by
     	 taking a leaf out of JFFS2's book.

 (*) Makes most of the contents of linux/blkdev.h, linux/buffer_head.h and
     linux/elevator.h contingent on CONFIG_BLOCK being set.  sector_div() is,
     however, still used in places, and so is still available.

 (*) Also made contingent are the contents of linux/mpage.h, linux/genhd.h and
     parts of linux/fs.h.

 (*) Makes a number of files in fs/ contingent on CONFIG_BLOCK.

 (*) Makes mm/bounce.c (bounce buffering) contingent on CONFIG_BLOCK.

 (*) set_page_dirty() doesn't call __set_page_dirty_buffers() if CONFIG_BLOCK
     is not enabled.

 (*) fs/no-block.c is created to hold out-of-line stubs and things that are
     required when CONFIG_BLOCK is not set:

     (*) Default blockdev file operations (to give error ENODEV on opening).

 (*) Makes some /proc changes:

     (*) /proc/devices does not list any blockdevs.

     (*) /proc/diskstats and /proc/partitions are contingent on CONFIG_BLOCK.

 (*) Makes some compat ioctl handling contingent on CONFIG_BLOCK.

 (*) If CONFIG_BLOCK is not defined, makes sys_quotactl() return -ENODEV if
     given command other than Q_SYNC or if a special device is specified.

 (*) In init/do_mounts.c, no reference is made to the blockdev routines if
     CONFIG_BLOCK is not defined.  This does not prohibit NFS roots or JFFS2.

 (*) The bdflush, ioprio_set and ioprio_get syscalls can now be absent (return
     error ENOSYS by way of cond_syscall if so).

 (*) The seclvl_bd_claim() and seclvl_bd_release() security calls do nothing if
     CONFIG_BLOCK is not set, since they can't then happen.

specific.  This is a precursor to being able to disable the block layer.

     (*) The superblock sync stuff moved to fs/super.c.

     (*) do_invalidatepage() moved to mm/truncate.c.

     (*) try_to_release_page() moved to mm/filemap.c.

 (*) Moved some related declarations between header files:

     (*) declarations for do_invalidatepage() and try_to_release_page() moved
     	 to linux/mm.h.

     (*) __set_page_dirty_buffers() moved to linux/buffer_head.h.

50462062a0 [PATCH] fs.h: ifdef security fields
[assuming BSD security levels are deleted]
The only user of i_security, f_security, s_security fields is SELinux,
however, quite a few security modules are trying to get into kernel.
So, wrap them under CONFIG_SECURITY. Adding config option for each
security field is likely an overkill.

Following Stephen Smalley's suggestion, i_security initialization is
moved to security_inode_alloc() to not clutter core code with ifdefs
and make alloc_inode() codepath tiny little bit smaller and faster.

The user of (highly greppable) struct fown_struct::security field is
still to be found. I've checked every "fown_struct" and every "f_owner"
occurence. Additionally it's removal doesn't break i386 allmodconfig
build.

struct inode, struct file, struct super_block, struct fown_struct
become smaller.

P.S. Combined with two reiserfs inode shrinking patches sent to
linux-fsdevel, I can finally suck 12 reiserfs inodes into one page.

ba52de123d [PATCH] inode-diet: Eliminate i_blksize from the inode structure
This eliminates the i_blksize field from struct inode.  Filesystems that want
to provide a per-inode st_blksize can do so by providing their own getattr
routine instead of using the generic_fillattr() function.

Note that some filesystems were providing pretty much random (and incorrect)
values for i_blksize.

8e18e2941c [PATCH] inode_diet: Replace inode.u.generic_ip with inode.i_private
The following patches reduce the size of the VFS inode structure by 28 bytes
on a UP x86.  (It would be more on an x86_64 system).  This is a 10% reduction
in the inode size on a UP kernel that is configured in a production mode
(i.e., with no spinlock or other debugging functions enabled; if you want to
save memory taken up by in-core inodes, the first thing you should do is
disable the debugging options; they are responsible for a huge amount of bloat
in the VFS inode structure).

This patch:

The filesystem or device-specific pointer in the inode is inside a union,
which is pretty pointless given that all 30+ users of this field have been
using the void pointer.  Get rid of the union and rename it to i_private, with
a comment to explain who is allowed to use the void pointer.  This is just a
cleanup, but it allows us to reuse the union 'u' for something something where
the union will actually be used.

349457ccf2 [PATCH] Allow file systems to manually d_move() inside of ->rename()
Some file systems want to manually d_move() the dentries involved in a
rename.  We can do this by making use of the FS_ODD_RENAME flag if we just
have nfs_rename() unconditionally do the d_move().  While there, we rename
the flag to be more descriptive.

OCFS2 uses this to protect that part of the rename operation with a cluster
lock.

Change posix_lock_file_conf(), and flock_lock_file() so that if called

 which on non-lockdep are the same as open_by_devnum(), blkdev_put()
 and blkdev_get().

- a subclass parameter to do_open(). [unused on non-lockdep]

- a subclass parameter to __blkdev_put(), which is a new internal
  function for the main blkdev_put*() functions. [parameter unused
  on non-lockdep kernels, except for two sanity check WARN_ON()s]

these functions carry no semantical difference - they only express
object dependencies towards the lockdep subsystem.

75e1fcc0b1 [PATCH] vfs: add lock owner argument to flush operation
Pass the POSIX lock owner ID to the flush operation.

This is useful for filesystems which don't want to store any locking state
in inode->i_flock but want to handle locking/unlocking POSIX locks
internally.  FUSE is one such filesystem but I think it possible that some
network filesystems would need this also.

Also add a flag to indicate that a POSIX locking request was generated by
close(), so filesystems using the above feature won't send an extra locking
request in this case.

2d1db3b117 [PATCH] page migration cleanup: pass "mapping" to migration functions
Change handling of address spaces.

Pass a pointer to the address space in which the page is migrated to all
migration function.  This avoids repeatedly having to retrieve the address
space pointer from the page and checking it for validity.  The old page
mapping will change once migration has gone to a certain step, so it is less
confusing to have the pointer always available.

Move the setting of the mapping and index for the new page into
migrate_pages().

726c334223 [PATCH] VFS: Permit filesystem to perform statfs with a known root dentry
Give the statfs superblock operation a dentry pointer rather than a superblock
pointer.

This complements the get_sb() patch.  That reduced the significance of
sb->s_root, allowing NFS to place a fake root there.  However, NFS does
require a dentry to use as a target for the statfs operation.  This permits
the root in the vfsmount to be used instead.

linux/mount.h has been added where necessary to make allyesconfig build
successfully.

Interest has also been expressed for use with the FUSE and XFS filesystems.

454e2398be [PATCH] VFS: Permit filesystem to override root dentry on mount
Extend the get_sb() filesystem operation to take an extra argument that
permits the VFS to pass in the target vfsmount that defines the mountpoint.

The filesystem is then required to manually set the superblock and root dentry
pointers.  For most filesystems, this should be done with simple_set_mnt()
which will set the superblock pointer and then set the root dentry to the
superblock's s_root (as per the old default behaviour).

The get_sb() op now returns an integer as there's now no need to return the
superblock pointer.

This patch permits a superblock to be implicitly shared amongst several mount
points, such as can be done with NFS to avoid potential inode aliasing.  In
such a case, simple_set_mnt() would not be called, and instead the mnt_root
and mnt_sb would be set directly.

The patch also makes the following changes:

 (*) the get_sb_*() convenience functions in the core kernel now take a vfsmount
     pointer argument and return an integer, so most filesystems have to change
     very little.

 (*) If one of the convenience function is not used, then get_sb() should
     normally call simple_set_mnt() to instantiate the vfsmount. This will
     always return 0, and so can be tail-called from get_sb().

 (*) generic_shutdown_super() now calls shrink_dcache_sb() to clean up the
     dcache upon superblock destruction rather than shrink_dcache_anon().

     This is required because the superblock may now have multiple trees that
     aren't actually bound to s_root, but that still need to be cleaned up. The
     currently called functions assume that the whole tree is rooted at s_root,
     and that anonymous dentries are not the roots of trees which results in
     dentries being left unculled.

     However, with the way NFS superblock sharing are currently set to be
     implemented, these assumptions are violated: the root of the filesystem is
     simply a dummy dentry and inode (the real inode for '/' may well be
     inaccessible), and all the vfsmounts are rooted on anonymous[*] dentries
     with child trees.

     [*] Anonymous until discovered from another tree.

 (*) The documentation has been adjusted, including the additional bit of
     changing ext2_* into foo_* in the documentation.

c89681ed7d [PATCH] remove steal_locks()
This patch removes the steal_locks() function.

steal_locks() doesn't work correctly with any filesystem that does it's own
lock management, including NFS, CIFS, etc.

In addition it has weird semantics on local filesystems in case tasks
sharing file-descriptor tables are doing POSIX locking operations in
parallel to execve().

The steal_locks() function has an effect on applications doing:

clone(CLONE_FILES)
  /* in child */
  lock
  execve
  lock

POSIX locks acquired before execve (by "child", "parent" or any further
task sharing files_struct) will after the execve be owned exclusively by
"child".

According to Chris Wright some LSB/LTP kind of suite triggers without the
stealing behavior, but there's no known real-world application that would
also fail.

Apps using NPTL are not affected, since all other threads are killed before
execve.

Apps using LinuxThreads are only affected if they

  - have multiple threads during exec (LinuxThreads doesn't kill other
    threads, the app may do it with pthread_kill_other_threads_np())
  - rely on POSIX locks being inherited across exec

Both conditions are documented, but not their interaction.

Apps using clone() natively are affected if they

  - use clone(CLONE_FILES)
  - rely on POSIX locks being inherited across exec

The above scenarios are unlikely, but possible.

If the patch is vetoed, there's a plan B, that involves mostly keeping the
weird stealing semantics, but changing the way lock ownership is handled so
that network and local filesystems work consistently.

That would add more complexity though, so this solution seems to be
preferred by most people.

It's more efficient for sendfile() emulation. Basically we cache an
internal private pipe and just use that as the intermediate area for
pages. Direct splicing is not available from sys_splice(), it is only
meant to be used for sendfile() emulation.

Additional patch from Ingo Molnar to avoid the PIPE_BUFFERS loop at
exit for the normal fast path.

I was grepping through the code and some `grep ganularity -R .` didn't
catch what I thought. Then looking closer I saw the term "granuality"
used in only four places (in comments) and granularity in many more
places describing the same idea. Some other facts:

dictionary.com does not know such a word
define:granuality on google is not found (and pages for granuality are
mostly related to patches to the kernel)
it has not been discussed as a term on LKML, AFAICS (=Can Search)

To be consistent, I think granularity should be used everywhere.

f79e2abb9b [PATCH] sys_sync_file_range()
Remove the recently-added LINUX_FADV_ASYNC_WRITE and LINUX_FADV_WRITE_WAIT
fadvise() additions, do it in a new sys_sync_file_range() syscall instead.
Reasons:

- It's more flexible.  Things which would require two or three syscalls with
  fadvise() can be done in a single syscall.

- Using fadvise() in this manner is something not covered by POSIX.

The patch wires up the syscall for x86.

The sycall is implemented in the new fs/sync.c.  The intention is that we can
move sys_fsync(), sys_fdatasync() and perhaps sys_sync() into there later.

Documentation for the syscall is in fs/sync.c.

A test app (sync_file_range.c) is in
http://www.zip.com.au/~akpm/linux/patches/stuff/ext3-tools.tar.gz.

The available-to-GPL-modules do_sync_file_range() is for knfsd: "A COMMIT can
say NFS_DATA_SYNC or NFS_FILE_SYNC.  I can skip the ->fsync call for
NFS_DATA_SYNC which is hopefully the more common."

Note: the `async' writeout mode SYNC_FILE_RANGE_WRITE will turn synchronous if
the queue is congested.  This is trivial to fix: add a new flag bit, set
wbc->nonblocking.  But I'm not sure that we want to expose implementation
details down to that level.

Note: it's notable that we can sync an fd which wasn't opened for writing.
Same with fsync() and fdatasync()).

Note: the code takes some care to handle attempts to sync file contents
outside the 16TB offset on 32-bit machines.  It makes such attempts appear to
succeed, for best 32-bit/64-bit compatibility.  Perhaps it should make such
requests fail...

Make baby-simple the code for /proc/devices.  Based on the proven design
for /proc/interrupts.

This also fixes the early-termination regression 2.6.16 introduced, as
demonstrated by:

    # dd if=/proc/devices bs=1
    Character devices:
      1 mem
    27+0 records in
    27+0 records out

This should also work (but is untested) when /proc/devices >4096 bytes,
which I believe is what the original 2.6.16 rewrite fixed.

5274f052e7 [PATCH] Introduce sys_splice() system call
This adds support for the sys_splice system call. Using a pipe as a
transport, it can connect to files or sockets (latter as output only).

From the splice.c comments:

   "splice": joining two ropes together by interweaving their strands.

   This is the "extended pipe" functionality, where a pipe is used as
   an arbitrary in-memory buffer. Think of a pipe as a small kernel
   buffer that you can use to transfer data from one end to the other.

   The traditional unix read/write is extended with a "splice()" operation
   that transfers data buffers to or from a pipe buffer.

   Named by Larry McVoy, original implementation from Linus, extended by
   Jens to support splicing to files and fixing the initial implementation
   bugs.

- inode.i_blocks
  Change the type from sector_t to blkcnt_t.

abcb6c9fd1 [PATCH] 2TB files: st_blocks is invalid when calling stat64
This patch series fixes the following problems on 32 bits architecture.

o stat64 returns the lower 32 bits of blocks, although userland st_blocks
  has 64 bits, because i_blocks has only 32 bits.  The ioctl with FIOQSIZE has
  the same problem.

o As Dave Kleikamp said, making >2TB file on JFS results in writing an
  invalid block number to disk inode.  The cause is the same as above too.

o In generic quota code dquot_transfer(), the file usage is calculated from
  i_blocks via inode_get_bytes().  If the file is over 2TB, the change of
  usage is less than expected.  The cause is the same as above too.

o As Trond Myklebust said, statfs64's entries related to blocks are invalid
  on statfs64 for a network filesystem which has more than 2^32-1 blocks with
  CONFIG_LBD disabled.  [PATCH 3/3]

We made patches to fix problems that occur when handling a large filesystem
and a large file.  It was discussed on the mails titled "stat64 for over 2TB
file returned invalid st_blocks".

Lockd and the NFSv4 server both exercise a race condition where
posix_test_lock() is called either before or after posix_lock_file() to
deal with a denied lock request due to a conflicting lock.

Remove the race condition for the NFSv4 server by adding a new conflicting
lock parameter to __posix_lock_file() , changing the name to
__posix_lock_file_conf().

Keep posix_lock_file() interface, add posix_lock_conf() interface, both
call __posix_lock_file_conf().

  being able to install Lustre on an unmodified distro kernel, which seems
  sane.  It should have zero runtime cost.

ebcf28e1c7 [PATCH] fadvise(): write commands
Add two new linux-specific fadvise extensions():

LINUX_FADV_ASYNC_WRITE: start async writeout of any dirty pages between file
offsets `offset' and `offset+len'.  Any pages which are currently under
writeout are skipped, whether or not they are dirty.

LINUX_FADV_WRITE_WAIT: wait upon writeout of any dirty pages between file
offsets `offset' and `offset+len'.

By combining these two operations the application may do several things:

LINUX_FADV_ASYNC_WRITE: push some or all of the dirty pages at the disk.

LINUX_FADV_WRITE_WAIT, LINUX_FADV_ASYNC_WRITE: push all of the currently dirty
pages at the disk.

LINUX_FADV_WRITE_WAIT, LINUX_FADV_ASYNC_WRITE, LINUX_FADV_WRITE_WAIT: push all
of the currently dirty pages at the disk, wait until they have been written.

It should be noted that none of these operations write out the file's
metadata.  So unless the application is strictly performing overwrites of
already-instantiated disk blocks, there are no guarantees here that the data
will be available after a crash.

To complete this suite of operations I guess we should have a "sync file
metadata only" operation.  This gives applications access to all the building
blocks needed for all sorts of sync operations.  But sync-metadata doesn't fit
well with the fadvise() interface.  Probably it should be a new syscall:
sys_fmetadatasync().

The patch also diddles with the meaning of `endbyte' in sys_fadvise64_64().
It is made to represent that last affected byte in the file (ie: it is
inclusive).  Generally, all these byterange and pagerange functions are
inclusive so we can easily represent EOF with -1.

As Ulrich notes, these two functions are somewhat abusive of the fadvise()
concept, which appears to be "set the future policy for this fd".

But these commands are a perfect fit with the fadvise() impementation, and
several of the existing fadvise() commands are synchronous and don't affect
future policy either.   I think we can live with the slight incongruity.

9b04c997b1 [PATCH] vfs: MS_VERBOSE should be MS_SILENT
The meaning of MS_VERBOSE is backwards; if the bit is set, it really means,
"don't be verbose".  This is confusing and counter-intuitive.

In addition, there is also no way to set the MS_VERBOSE flag in the
mount(8) program in util-linux, but interesting, it does define options
which would do the right thing if MS_SILENT were defined, which
unfortunately we do not:

26bcbf965f lockd: stop abusing file_lock_list
Currently lockd directly access the file_lock_list from fs/locks.c.
It does so to mark locks granted or reclaimable.  This is very
suboptimal, because a) lockd needs to poke into locks.c internals, and
b) it needs to iterate over all locks in the system for marking locks
granted or reclaimable.

This patch adds lists for granted and reclaimable locks to the nlm_host
structure instead, and adds locks to those.

nlmclnt_lock:
	now adds the lock to h_granted instead of setting the
	NFS_LCK_GRANTED, still O(1)

nlmclnt_mark_reclaim:
	goes away completely, replaced by a list_splice_init.
	Complexity reduced from O(locks in the system) to O(1)

reclaimer:
	iterates over h_reclaim now, complexity reduced from
	O(locks in the system) to O(locks per nlm_host)

7117bf3dfb lockd: Remove FL_LOCKD flag
Currently lockd identifies its own locks using the FL_LOCKD flag.  This
doesn't scale well to multiple lock managers--if we did this in nfsv4 too,
for example, we'd be left with only one free flag bit.

Instead, we just check whether the file manager ops (fl_lmops) set on this
lock are our own.

The only use for this is in nlm_traverse_locks, which uses it to find locks
that need cleaning up when freeing a host or a file.

In the long run it might be nice to do reference counting instead of
traversing all the locks like this....

8dc7c3115b locks,lockd: fix race in nlmsvc_testlock
posix_test_lock() returns a pointer to a struct file_lock which is unprotected
and can be removed while in use by the caller.  Move the conflicting lock from
the return to a parameter, and copy the conflicting lock.

In most cases the caller ends up putting the copy of the conflicting lock on
the stack.  On i386, sizeof(struct file_lock) appears to be about 100 bytes.
We're assuming that's reasonable.

b4629fe2f0 VFS: New /proc file /proc/self/mountstats
Create a new file under /proc/self, called mountstats, where mounted file
systems can export information (configuration options, performance counters,
and so on).  Use a mechanism similar to /proc/mounts and s_ops->show_options.

This mechanism does not violate namespace security, and is safe to use while
other processes are unmounting file systems.

Thanks to Mike Waychison for his review and comments.

Test-plan:
Test concurrent mount/unmount operations while cat'ing /proc/self/mountstats.

0adb25d2e7 [PATCH] ext3: ext3_symlink should use GFP_NOFS allocations inside
This patch fixes illegal __GFP_FS allocation inside ext3 transaction in
ext3_symlink().  Such allocation may re-enter ext3 code from
try_to_free_pages.  But JBD/ext3 code keeps a pointer to current journal
handle in task_struct and, hence, is not reentrable.

This bug led to "Assertion failure in journal_dirty_metadata()" messages.

I have benchmarked this on an x86_64 NUMA system and see no significant
performance difference on kernbench.  Tested on both x86_64 and powerpc.

The way we do file struct accounting is not very suitable for batched
freeing.  For scalability reasons, file accounting was
constructor/destructor based.  This meant that nr_files was decremented
only when the object was removed from the slab cache.  This is susceptible
to slab fragmentation.  With RCU based file structure, consequent batched
freeing and a test program like Serge's, we just speed this up and end up
with a very fragmented slab -

llm22:~ # cat /proc/sys/fs/file-nr
587730  0       758844

At the same time, I see only a 2000+ objects in filp cache.  The following
patch I fixes this problem.

This patch changes the file counting by removing the filp_count_lock.
Instead we use a separate percpu counter, nr_files, for now and all
accesses to it are through get_nr_files() api.  In the sysctl handler for
nr_files, we populate files_stat.nr_files before returning to user.

Counting files as an when they are created and destroyed (as opposed to
inside slab) allows us to correctly count open files with RCU.

This introduces a new address space operation migratepage() that may be used
by a filesystem to implement its own version of page migration.

A version is provided that migrates buffers attached to pages.  Some
filesystems (ext2, ext3, xfs) are modified to utilize this feature.

The swapper address space operation are modified so that a regular
migrate_page() will occur for anonymous pages without writeback (migrate_pages
forces every anonymous page to have a swap entry).

5590ff0d55 [PATCH] vfs: *at functions: core
Here is a series of patches which introduce in total 13 new system calls
which take a file descriptor/filename pair instead of a single file
name.  These functions, openat etc, have been discussed on numerous
occasions.  They are needed to implement race-free filesystem traversal,
they are necessary to implement a virtual per-thread current working
directory (think multi-threaded backup software), etc.

We have in glibc today implementations of the interfaces which use the
/proc/self/fd magic.  But this code is rather expensive.  Here are some
results (similar to what Jim Meyering posted before).

The test creates a deep directory hierarchy on a tmpfs filesystem.  Then
rm -fr is used to remove all directories.  Without syscall support I get
this:

real    0m31.921s
user    0m0.688s
sys     0m31.234s

With syscall support the results are much better:

real    0m20.699s
user    0m0.536s
sys     0m20.149s

The interfaces are for obvious reasons currently not much used.  But they'll
be used.  coreutils (and Jeff's posixutils) are already using them.
Furthermore, code like ftw/fts in libc (maybe even glob) will also start using
them.  I expect a patch to make follow soon.  Every program which is walking
the filesystem tree will benefit.

Turn noatime and nodiratime into per-mount instead of per-sb flags.

After all the preparations this is a rather trivial patch.  The mount code
needs to treat the two options as per-mount instead of per-superblock, and
touch_atime needs to be changed to check the new MNT_ flags in addition to
the MS_ flags that are kept for filesystems that are always
noatime/nodiratime but not user settable anymore.  Besides that core code
only nfs needed an update because it's leaving atime updates to the server
and thus sets the S_NOATIME flag on every inode, but needs to know whether
it's a real noatime mount for an getattr optimization.

While we're at it I've killed the IS_NOATIME/IS_NODIRATIME macros that were
only used by touch_atime.

struct vfsmount when updating ctime and mtime.  This preparation patch
replaces the inode_update_time routine with a file_update_atime routine so

context anyway).  Also get rid of the unused second argument - we always
want to update the ctime when calling this routine.

a885c8c431 [PATCH] Add block_device_operations.getgeo block device method
HDIO_GETGEO is implemented in most block drivers, and all of them have to
duplicate the code to copy the structure to userspace, as well as getting
the start sector.  This patch moves that to common code [1] and adds a
->getgeo method to fill out the raw kernel hd_geometry structure.  For many
drivers this means ->ioctl can go away now.

[1] the s390 block drivers are odd in this respect.  xpram sets ->start
    to 4 always which seems more than odd, and the dasd driver shifts
    the start offset around, probably because of it's non-standard
    sector size.

4a30131e7d [PATCH] Fix some problems with truncate and mtime semantics.
SUS requires that when truncating a file to the size that it currently
is:
  truncate and ftruncate should NOT modify ctime or mtime
  O_TRUNC SHOULD modify ctime and mtime.

Currently mtime and ctime are always modified on most local
filesystems (side effect of ->truncate) or never modified (on NFS).

With this patch:
  ATTR_CTIME|ATTR_MTIME are sent with ATTR_SIZE precisely when
    an update of these times is required whether size changes or not
    (via a new argument to do_truncate).  This allows NFS to do
    the right thing for O_TRUNC.
  inode_setattr nolonger forces ATTR_MTIME|ATTR_CTIME when the ATTR_SIZE
    sets the size to it's current value.  This allows local filesystems
    to do the right thing for f?truncate.

Also, the logic in inode_setattr is changed a bit so there are two return
points.  One returns the error from vmtruncate if it failed, the other
returns 0 (there can be no other failure).

Finally, if vmtruncate succeeds, and ATTR_SIZE is the only change
requested, we now fall-through and mark_inode_dirty.  If a filesystem did
not have a ->truncate function, then vmtruncate will have changed i_size,
without marking the inode as 'dirty', and I think this is wrong.

If the server receives an NLM cancel call and finds no waiting lock to
 cancel, then chances are the lock has already been applied, and the client
 just hadn't yet processed the NLM granted callback before it sent the
 cancel.

 The Open Group text, for example, perimts a server to return either success
 (LCK_GRANTED) or failure (LCK_DENIED) in this case.  But returning an error
 seems more helpful; the client may be able to use it to recognize that a
 race has occurred and to recover from the race.

 So, modify the relevant functions to return an error in this case.

Here is the patch to implement madvise(MADV_REMOVE) - which frees up a
given range of pages & its associated backing store.  Current
implementation supports only shmfs/tmpfs and other filesystems return
-ENOSYS.

"Some app allocates large tmpfs files, then when some task quits and some
client disconnect, some memory can be released.  However the only way to
release tmpfs-swap is to MADV_REMOVE". - Andrea Arcangeli

Databases want to use this feature to drop a section of their bufferpool
(shared memory segments) - without writing back to disk/swap space.

This feature is also useful for supporting hot-plug memory on UML.

Concerns raised by Andrew Morton:

- "We have no plan for holepunching!  If we _do_ have such a plan (or
  might in the future) then what would the API look like?  I think
  sys_holepunch(fd, start, len), so we should start out with that."

- Using madvise is very weird, because people will ask "why do I need to
  mmap my file before I can stick a hole in it?"

- None of the other madvise operations call into the filesystem in this
  manner.  A broad question is: is this capability an MM operation or a
  filesytem operation?  truncate, for example, is a filesystem operation
  which sometimes has MM side-effects.  madvise is an mm operation and with
  this patch, it gains FS side-effects, only they're really, really
  significant ones."

Comments:

- Andrea suggested the fs operation too but then it's more efficient to
  have it as a mm operation with fs side effects, because they don't
  immediatly know fd and physical offset of the range.  It's possible to
  fixup in userland and to use the fs operation but it's more expensive,
  the vmas are already in the kernel and we can use them.

Short term plan &  Future Direction:

- We seem to need this interface only for shmfs/tmpfs files in the short
  term.  We have to add hooks into the filesystem for correctness and
  completeness.  This is what this patch does.

- In the future, plan is to support both fs and mmap apis also.  This
  also involves (other) filesystem specific functions to be implemented.

- Current patch doesn't support VM_NONLINEAR - which can be addressed in
  the future.

994fc28c7b [PATCH] add AOP_TRUNCATED_PAGE, prepend AOP_ to WRITEPAGE_ACTIVATE
readpage(), prepare_write(), and commit_write() callers are updated to
understand the special return code AOP_TRUNCATED_PAGE in the style of
writepage() and WRITEPAGE_ACTIVATE.  AOP_TRUNCATED_PAGE tells the caller that
the callee has unlocked the page and that the operation should be tried again
with a new page.  OCFS2 uses this to detect and work around a lock inversion in
its aop methods.  There should be no change in behaviour for methods that don't
return AOP_TRUNCATED_PAGE.

WRITEPAGE_ACTIVATE is also prepended with AOP_ for consistency and they are
made enums so that kerneldoc can be used to document their semantics.

8c744fb83d [PATCH] add a file_permission helper
A few more callers of permission() just want to check for a different access
pattern on an already open file.  This patch adds a wrapper for permission()
that takes a file in preparation of per-mount read-only support and to clean
up the callers a little.  The helper is not intended for new code, everything
without the interface set in stone should use vfs_permission()

An unbindable mount does not forward or receive propagation.  Also
unbindable mount disallows bind mounts.  The semantics is as follows.

Bind semantics:
  It is invalid to bind mount an unbindable mount.

Move semantics:
  It is invalid to move an unbindable mount under shared mount.

Clone-namespace semantics:
  If a mount is unbindable in the parent namespace, the corresponding
  cloned mount in the child namespace becomes unbindable too.  Note:
  there is subtle difference, unbindable mounts cannot be bind mounted
  but can be cloned during clone-namespace.

Now that RCU applied on 'struct file' seems stable, we can place f_rcuhead
in a memory location that is not anymore used at call_rcu(&f->f_rcuhead,
file_free_rcu) time, to reduce the size of this critical kernel object.

The trick I used is to move f_rcuhead and f_list in an union called f_u

The callers are changed so that f_rcuhead becomes f_u.fu_rcuhead and f_list
becomes f_u.f_list

   different type for those but for now let's leave them alone.  That,
   BTW, is a case when __nocast use had been actively confusing - it had
   been used in the same code for two different and similar types, with
   no way to catch misuses.  Switch of gfp_t to bitwise had caught that
   immediately...

One tricky bit is left alone to be dealt with later - mapping->flags is
a mix of gfp_t and error indications.  Left alone for now.

ab2af1f500 [PATCH] files: files struct with RCU
Patch to eliminate struct files_struct.file_lock spinlock on the reader side
and use rcu refcounting rcuref_xxx api for the f_count refcounter.  The
updates to the fdtable are done by allocating a new fdtable structure and
setting files->fdt to point to the new structure.  The fdtable structure is
protected by RCU thereby allowing lock-free lookup.  For fd arrays/sets that
are vmalloced, we use keventd to free them since RCU callbacks can't sleep.  A
global list of fdtable to be freed is not scalable, so we use a per-cpu list.
If keventd is already handling the current cpu's work, we use a timer to defer
queueing of that work.

Since the last publication, this patch has been re-written to avoid using
explicit memory barriers and use rcu_assign_pointer(), rcu_dereference()
premitives instead.  This required that the fd information is kept in a
separate structure (fdtable) and updated atomically.

cc314eef01 Fix nasty ncpfs symlink handling bug.
This bug could cause oopses and page state corruption, because ncpfs
used the generic page-cache symlink handlign functions.  But those
functions only work if the page cache is guaranteed to be "stable", ie a
page that was installed when the symlink walk was started has to still
be installed in the page cache at the end of the walk.

We could have fixed ncpfs to not use the generic helper routines, but it
is in many ways much cleaner to instead improve on the symlink walking
helper routines so that they don't require that absolute stability.

We do this by allowing "follow_link()" to return a error-pointer as a
cookie, which is fed back to the cleanup "put_link()" routine.  This
also simplifies NFS symlink handling.

c293621bbf [PATCH] stale POSIX lock handling
I believe that there is a problem with the handling of POSIX locks, which
the attached patch should address.

The problem appears to be a race between fcntl(2) and close(2).  A
multithreaded application could close a file descriptor at the same time as
it is trying to acquire a lock using the same file descriptor.  I would
suggest that that multithreaded application is not providing the proper
synchronization for itself, but the OS should still behave correctly.

SUS3 (Single UNIX Specification Version 3, read: POSIX) indicates that when
a file descriptor is closed, that all POSIX locks on the file, owned by the
process which closed the file descriptor, should be released.

The trick here is when those locks are released.  The current code releases
all locks which exist when close is processing, but any locks in progress
are handled when the last reference to the open file is released.

There are three cases to consider.

One is the simple case, a multithreaded (mt) process has a file open and
races to close it and acquire a lock on it.  In this case, the close will
release one reference to the open file and when the fcntl is done, it will
release the other reference.  For this situation, no locks should exist on
the file when both the close and fcntl operations are done.  The current
system will handle this case because the last reference to the open file is
being released.

The second case is when the mt process has dup(2)'d the file descriptor.
The close will release one reference to the file and the fcntl, when done,
will release another, but there will still be at least one more reference
to the open file.  One could argue that the existence of a lock on the file
after the close has completed is okay, because it was acquired after the
close operation and there is still a way for the application to release the
lock on the file, using an existing file descriptor.

The third case is when the mt process has forked, after opening the file
and either before or after becoming an mt process.  In this case, each
process would hold a reference to the open file.  For each process, this
degenerates to first case above.  However, the lock continues to exist
until both processes have released their references to the open file.  This
lock could block other lock requests.

The changes to release the lock when the last reference to the open file
aren't quite right because they would allow the lock to exist as long as
there was a reference to the open file.  This is too long.

The new proposed solution is to add support in the fcntl code path to
detect a race with close and then to release the lock which was just
acquired when such as race is detected.  This causes locks to be released
in a timely fashion and for the system to conform to the POSIX semantic
specification.

This was tested by instrumenting a kernel to detect the handling locks and
then running a program which generates case #3 above.  A dangling lock
could be reliably generated.  When the changes to detect the close/fcntl
race were added, a dangling lock could no longer be generated.

88bd5121d6 [PATCH] Fix soft lockup due to NTFS: VFS part and explanation
Something has changed in the core kernel such that we now get concurrent
inode write outs, one e.g via pdflush and one via sys_sync or whatever.
This causes a nasty deadlock in ntfs.  The only clean solution
unfortunately requires a minor vfs api extension.

First the deadlock analysis:

Prerequisive knowledge: NTFS has a file $MFT (inode 0) loaded at mount
time.  The NTFS driver uses the page cache for storing the file contents as
usual.  More interestingly this file contains the table of on-disk inodes
as a sequence of MFT_RECORDs.  Thus NTFS driver accesses the on-disk inodes
by accessing the MFT_RECORDs in the page cache pages of the loaded inode
$MFT.

The situation: VFS inode X on a mounted ntfs volume is dirty.  For same
inode X, the ntfs_inode is dirty and thus corresponding on-disk inode,
which is as explained above in a dirty PAGE_CACHE_PAGE belonging to the
table of inodes ($MFT, inode 0).

What happens:

Process 1: sys_sync()/umount()/whatever...  calls __sync_single_inode() for
$MFT -> do_writepages() -> write_page for the dirty page containing the
on-disk inode X, the page is now locked -> ntfs_write_mst_block() which
clears PageUptodate() on the page to prevent anyone else getting hold of it
whilst it does the write out (this is necessary as the on-disk inode needs
"fixups" applied before the write to disk which are removed again after the
write and PageUptodate is then set again).  It then analyses the page
looking for dirty on-disk inodes and when it finds one it calls
ntfs_may_write_mft_record() to see if it is safe to write this on-disk
inode.  This then calls ilookup5() to check if the corresponding VFS inode
is in icache().  This in turn calls ifind() which waits on the inode lock
via wait_on_inode whilst holding the global inode_lock.

Process 2: pdflush results in a call to __sync_single_inode for the same
VFS inode X on the ntfs volume.  This locks the inode (I_LOCK) then calls
write-inode -> ntfs_write_inode -> map_mft_record() -> read_cache_page() of
the page (in page cache of table of inodes $MFT, inode 0) containing the
on-disk inode.  This page has PageUptodate() clear because of Process 1
(see above) so read_cache_page() blocks when tries to take the page lock
for the page so it can call ntfs_read_page().

Thus Process 1 is holding the page lock on the page containing the on-disk
inode X and it is waiting on the inode X to be unlocked in ifind() so it
can write the page out and then unlock the page.

And Process 2 is holding the inode lock on inode X and is waiting for the
page to be unlocked so it can call ntfs_readpage() or discover that
Process 1 set PageUptodate() again and use the page.

Thus we have a deadlock due to ifind() waiting on the inode lock.

The only sensible solution: NTFS does not care whether the VFS inode is
locked or not when it calls ilookup5() (it doesn't use the VFS inode at
all, it just uses it to find the corresponding ntfs_inode which is of
course attached to the VFS inode (both are one single struct); and it uses
the ntfs_inode which is subject to its own locking so I_LOCK is irrelevant)
hence we want a modified ilookup5_nowait() which is the same as ilookup5()
but it does not wait on the inode lock.

Without such functionality I would have to keep my own ntfs_inode cache in
the NTFS driver just so I can find ntfs_inodes independent of their VFS
inodes which would be slow, memory and cpu cycle wasting, and incredibly
stupid given the icache already exists in the VFS.

Below is a patch that does the ilookup5_nowait() implementation in
fs/inode.c and exports it.

ilookup5_nowait.diff:

Introduce ilookup5_nowait() which is basically the same as ilookup5() but
it does not wait on the inode's lock (i.e. it omits the wait_on_inode()
done in ifind()).

This is needed to avoid a nasty deadlock in NTFS.

inotify is intended to correct the deficiencies of dnotify, particularly
its inability to scale and its terrible user interface:

        * dnotify requires the opening of one fd per each directory
          that you intend to watch. This quickly results in too many
          open files and pins removable media, preventing unmount.
        * dnotify is directory-based. You only learn about changes to
          directories. Sure, a change to a file in a directory affects
          the directory, but you are then forced to keep a cache of
          stat structures.
        * dnotify's interface to user-space is awful.  Signals?

inotify provides a more usable, simple, powerful solution to file change
notification:

        * inotify's interface is a system call that returns a fd, not SIGIO.
	  You get a single fd, which is select()-able.
        * inotify has an event that says "the filesystem that the item
          you were watching is on was unmounted."
        * inotify can watch directories or files.

Inotify is currently used by Beagle (a desktop search infrastructure),
Gamin (a FAM replacement), and other projects.

cb2c023375 [PATCH] export generic_drop_inode() to modules
OCFS2 wants to mark an inode which has been orphaned by another node so
that during final iput it takes the correct path through the VFS and can
pass through the OCFS2 delete_inode callback.  Since i_nlink can get out of
date with other nodes, the best way I see to accomplish this is by clearing
i_nlink on those inodes at drop_inode time.  Other than this small amount
of work, nothing different needs to happen, so I think it would be cleanest
to be able to just call generic_drop_inode at the end of the OCFS2
drop_inode callback.

v3).  It provides full process fairness, while giving excellent
aggregate system throughput even for many competing processes.  It
supports io priorities, either inherited from the cpu nice value or set
directly with the ioprio_get/set syscalls.  The latter closely mimic
set/getpriority.

This import is based on my latest from -mm.

eb6fe0c388 [PATCH] xip: reduce code duplication
This patch reworks filemap_xip.c with the goal to reduce code duplication
from mm/filemap.c.  It applies agains 2.6.12-rc6-mm1.  Instead of
implementing the aio functions, this one implements the synchronous
read/write functions only.  For readv and writev, the generic fallback is
used.  For aio, we rely on the application doing the fallback.  Since our
"synchronous" function does memcpy immediately anyway, there is no
performance difference between using the fallbacks or implementing each
operation.

bb93e3a52f [PATCH] block: add unlocked_ioctl support for block devices
This patch allows block device drivers to convert their ioctl functions to
unlocked_ioctl() like character devices and other subsystems.  All
functions that were called with the BKL held before are still used that
way, but I would not be surprised if it could be removed from the ioctl
functions in drivers/block/ioctl.c themselves.

As a side note, I found that compat_blkdev_ioctl() acquires the BKL as
well, which looks like a bug.  I have checked that every user of
disk->fops->compat_ioctl() in the current git tree gets the BKL itself, so
it could easily be removed from compat_blkdev_ioctl().

991114c6fa [PATCH] fix for prune_icache()/forced final iput() races
Based on analysis and a patch from Russ Weight <rweight@us.ibm.com>

There is a race condition that can occur if an inode is allocated and then
released (using iput) during the ->fill_super functions.  The race
condition is between kswapd and mount.

For most filesystems this can only happen in an error path when kswapd is
running concurrently.  For isofs, however, the error can occur in a more
common code path (which is how the bug was found).

The logic here is "we want final iput() to free inode *now* instead of
letting it sit in cache if fs is going down or had not quite come up".  The
problem is with kswapd seeing such inodes in the middle of being killed and
happily taking over.

The clean solution would be to tell kswapd to leave those inodes alone and
let our final iput deal with them.  I.e.  add a new flag
(I_FORCED_FREEING), set it before write_inode_now() there and make
prune_icache() leave those alone.

acaefc25d2 [PATCH] libfs: add simple attribute files
Based on the discussion about spufs attributes, this is my suggestion
for a more generic attribute file support that can be used by both
debugfs and spufs.

Simple attribute files behave similarly to sequential files from
a kernel programmers perspective in that a standard set of file
operations is provided and only an open operation needs to
be written that registers file specific get() and set() functions.

These operations are defined as

void foo_set(void *data, u64 val); and
u64 foo_get(void *data);

where data is the inode->u.generic_ip pointer of the file and the
operations just need to make send of that pointer. The infrastructure
makes sure this works correctly with concurrent access and partial
read calls.

A macro named DEFINE_SIMPLE_ATTRIBUTE is provided to further simplify
using the attributes.

This patch already contains the changes for debugfs to use attributes
for its internal file operations.

4dc3b16ba1 [PATCH] DocBook: changes and extensions to the kernel documentation
I have recompiled Linux kernel 2.6.11.5 documentation for me and our
university students again.  The documentation could be extended for more
sources which are equipped by structured comments for recent 2.6 kernels.  I
have tried to proceed with that task.  I have done that more times from 2.6.0
time and it gets boring to do same changes again and again.  Linux kernel
compiles after changes for i386 and ARM targets.  I have added references to
some more files into kernel-api book, I have added some section names as well.
 So please, check that changes do not break something and that categories are
not too much skewed.

I have changed kernel-doc to accept "fastcall" and "asmlinkage" words reserved
by kernel convention.  Most of the other changes are modifications in the
comments to make kernel-doc happy, accept some parameters description and do
not bail out on errors.  Changed <pid> to @pid in the description, moved some
#ifdef before comments to correct function to comments bindings, etc.

You can see result of the modified documentation build at

Some more sources are ready to be included into kernel-doc generated
documentation.  Sources has been added into kernel-api for now.  Some more
section names added and probably some more chaos introduced as result of quick

1da177e4c3 Linux-2.6.12-rc2
Initial git repository build. I'm not bothering with the full history,
even though we have it. We can create a separate "historical" git
archive of that later if we want to, and in the meantime it's about
3.2GB when imported into git - space that would just make the early
git days unnecessarily complicated, when we don't have a lot of good
infrastructure for it.

Let it rip!
