In smp_85xx_start_cpu() we are passed an address but we're unsure if
it's a real or virtual address, so there's a check to determine that.
The check has an off-by-one in that it tests if the address is greater
than high_memory, but high_memory is the first address of high memory,
so the check should be greater-or-equal.
It seems this has never been a problem in practice, but it also triggers
the DEBUG_VIRTUAL checks in __pa() which we would like to avoid. We can
fix both issues by converting high_memory - 1 to a physical address and
testing against that.

When CONFIG_SMP=y, timebase synchronization is required when the second

arch/powerpc/kernel/smp.c:
int __cpu_up(unsigned int cpu, struct task_struct *tidle)

When CONFIG_HOTPLUG_CPU=n and CONFIG_KEXEC_CORE=n,
smp_85xx_ops.give_timebase is NULL,
smp_85xx_ops.take_timebase is NULL,
As a result, the timebase is not synchronized.

The support was for this was mainlined 13 years ago, in v2.6.25
[0e0fffe887] just around the ppc --> powerpc migration.
I believe the board was introduced a year or two before that, so it
is roughly a 15 year old platform - with the CPU speed and memory size
that was typical for that era.
I haven't had one of these boards for several years, and availability
was discontinued several years before that.
Given that, there is no point in adding a burden to testing coverage
that builds all possible defconfigs, so it makes sense to remove it.
Of course it will remain in the git history forever, for anyone who
happens to find a functional board and wants to tinker with it.

We have smp_ops->cpu_die() and ppc_md.cpu_die(). One of them offlines
the current CPU and one offlines another CPU, can you guess which is
which? Also one is in smp_ops and one is in ppc_md?

it does. And move it into smp_ops where it belongs.

CPU like P4080 has 36bit physical address, its DDR physical
start address can be configured above 4G by LAW registers.
For such systems in which their physical memory start address was
configured higher than 4G, we need also to write addr_h into the spin
table of the target secondary CPU, so that addr_h and addr_l together
represent a 64bit physical address.
Otherwise the secondary core can not get correct entry to start from.

Having to call qe_ic_init() from platform-specific code makes it
awkward to allow building the QE drivers for ARM. It's also a needless
duplication of code, and slightly error-prone: Instead of the caller
needing to know the details of whether the QUICC Engine High and QUICC
Engine Low are actually the same interrupt (see e.g. the machine_is()
in mpc85xx_mds_qeic_init), just let the init function choose the
appropriate handlers after it has parsed the DT and figured it out. If
the two interrupts are distinct, use separate handlers, otherwise use
the handler which first checks the CHIVEC register (for the high
priority interrupts), then the CIVEC.
All existing callers pass 0 for flags, so continue to do that from the
new single caller. Later cleanups will remove that argument
from qe_ic_init and simplify the body, as well as make qe_ic_init into
a proper init function for an IRQCHIP_DECLARE, eliminating the need to
manually look up the fsl,qe-ic node.

There is a config item CONFIG_SIMPLE_GPIO which
provides simple memory mapped GPIOs specific to powerpc.
However, the only platform which selects this option is
mpc5200, and this platform doesn't use it.
There are three boards calling simple_gpiochip_init(), but
as they don't select CONFIG_SIMPLE_GPIO, this is just a nop.
Simple_gpio is just redundant with the generic MMIO GPIO
driver which can be found in driver/gpio/ and selected via
CONFIG_GPIO_GENERIC_PLATFORM, so drop simple_gpio driver.

Since commit 302c059f2e (QE: use subsys_initcall to init qe),
mpc85xx_qe_init() has done nothing apart from possibly emitting a
pr_err(). As part of reducing the amount of QE-related code in
arch/powerpc/ (and eventually support QE on other architectures),
remove this low-hanging fruit.

Notable changes:
- Removal of the NPU DMA code, used by the out-of-tree Nvidia driver, as well
as some other functions only used by drivers that haven't (yet?) made it
upstream.
- A fix for a bug in our handling of hardware watchpoints (eg. perf record -e
mem: ...) which could lead to register corruption and kernel crashes.
- Enable HAVE_ARCH_HUGE_VMAP, which allows us to use large pages for vmalloc
when using the Radix MMU.
- A large but incremental rewrite of our exception handling code to use gas
macros rather than multiple levels of nested CPP macros.
And the usual small fixes, cleanups and improvements.

Move to a scheme closer to what other architectures use (and I dare to
say the intent of the system):
- ZONE_DMA: optionally for memory < 31-bit (64-bit embedded only)
- ZONE_NORMAL: everything addressable by the kernel
- ZONE_HIGHMEM: memory > 32-bit for 32-bit kernels
