05484298cb perf tools: Add support for weight v7 (modified)
perf record has a new option -W that enables weightened sampling.

Add sorting support in top/report for the average weight per sample and the
total weight sum. This allows to both compare relative cost per event
and the total cost over the measurement period.

Add the necessary glue to perf report, record and the library.

v2: Merge with new hist refactoring.
v3: Fix manpage. Remove value check.
Rename global_weight to weight and weight to local_weight.
v4: Readd sort keys to manpage
v5: Move weight to end
v6: Move weight to template
v7: Rename weight key.

Original patch from Andi modified by Stephane Eranian <eranian@google.com>
to include ONLY the weight supporting code and apply to pristine 3.8.0-rc4.

This adds core architecture support for Imagination's Meta processor
cores, followed by some later miscellaneous arch/metag cleanups and
fixes which I kept separate to ease review:

  - Support for basic Meta 1 (ATP) and Meta 2 (HTP) core architecture
  - A few fixes all over, particularly for symbol prefixes
  - A few privilege protection fixes
  - Several cleanups (setup.c includes, split out a lot of metag_ksyms.c)
  - Fix some missing exports
  - Convert hugetlb to use vm_unmapped_area()
  - Copy device tree to non-init memory
  - Provide dma_get_sgtable()

Merge tag 'arc-v3.9-rc1-late' of git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/vgupta/arc

Pull new ARC architecture from Vineet Gupta:
"Initial ARC Linux port with some fixes on top for 3.9-rc1:

I would like to introduce the Linux port to ARC Processors (from
Synopsys) for 3.9-rc1. The patch-set has been discussed on the public
lists since Nov and has received a fair bit of review, specially from
Arnd, tglx, Al and other subsystem maintainers for DeviceTree, kgdb...

The arch bits are in arch/arc, some asm-generic changes (acked by
Arnd), a minor change to PARISC (acked by Helge).

The series is a touch bigger for a new port for 2 main reasons:

   1. It enables a basic kernel in first sub-series and adds
      ptrace/kgdb/.. later

   2. Some of the fallout of review (DeviceTree support, multi-platform-
image support) were added on top of orig series, primarily to
      record the revision history.

This updated pull request additionally contains

   - fixes due to our GNU tools catching up with the new syscall/ptrace
     ABI

   - some (minor) cross-arch Kconfig updates."

0479b8b9cf perf evlist: Make event_copy local to mmaps
I am getting segfaults *after* the time sorting of perf samples where
the event type is off the charts:

(gdb) bt
\#0 0x0807b1b2 in hists__inc_nr_events (hists=0x80a99c4, type=1163281902) at util/hist.c:1225
\#1 0x08070795 in perf_session_deliver_event (session=0x80a9b90, event=0xf7a6aff8, sample=0xffffc318, tool=0xffffc520,
    file_offset=0) at util/session.c:884
\#2 0x0806f9b9 in flush_sample_queue (s=0x80a9b90, tool=0xffffc520) at util/session.c:555
\#3 0x0806fc53 in process_finished_round (tool=0xffffc520, event=0x0, session=0x80a9b90) at util/session.c:645

This is bizarre because the event has already been processed once --
before it was added to the samples queue -- and the event was found to
be sane at that time.

There seem to be 2 causes:

1. perf_evlist__mmap_read updates the read location even though there
are outstanding references to events sitting in the mmap buffers via the
ordered samples queue.

2. There is a single evlist->event_copy for all evlist entries.
event_copy is used to handle an event wrapping at the mmap buffer
boundary.

This patch addresses the second problem - making event_copy local to
each perf_mmap. With this change my highly repeatable use case no longer
fails.

The first problem is much more complicated and will be the subject of a
future patch.

d2709c7ce4 perf: Make perf build for x86 with UAPI disintegration applied
Make perf build for x86 once the UAPI disintegration patches for that arch
have been applied by adding the appropriate -I flags - in the right order -
and then converting some #includes that use ../.. notation to find main kernel
headerfiles to use <asm/foo.h> and <linux/foo.h> instead.

Note that -Iarch/foo/include/uapi is present _before_ -Iarch/foo/include.
This makes sure we get the userspace version of the pt_regs struct. Ideally,
we wouldn't have the latter -I flag at all, but unfortunately we want
asm/svm.h and asm/vmx.h in builtin-kvm.c and these aren't part of the UAPI -
at least not for x86. I wonder if the bits outside of the __KERNEL__ guards
*should* be transferred there.

I note also that perf seems to do its dependency handling manually by listing
all the header files it might want to use in LIB_H in the Makefile. Can this
be changed to use -MD?

Note that to do make this work, we need to export and UAPI disintegrate
linux/hw_breakpoint.h, which I think should've been exported previously so that
perf can access the bits. We have to do this in the same patch to maintain
bisectability.

70cb4e963f perf tools: Add a global variable "const char *input_name"
Currently many perf commands annotate/evlist/report/script/lock etc all
support "-i" option to chose a specific perf data, and all of them
create a local "input_name" to save the file name for that perf data.

Since most of these commands need it, we can add a global variable for
it, also it can some other benefits:

1. When calling script browser inside hists/annotation browser, it needs
to know the perf data file name to run that script.

2. For further feature like runtime switching to another perf data file,
this variable can also help.

26d330226b perf tools: Support for DWARF mode callchain
This patch enables perf to use the DWARF unwind code.

It extends the perf record '-g' option with following arguments:
'fp' - provides framepointer based user
                   stack backtrace
'dwarf[,size]' - provides DWARF (libunwind) based user stack
backtrace. The size specifies the size of the
user stack dump. If omitted it is 8192 by default.

If libunwind is found during the perf build, then the 'dwarf' argument
becomes available for record command. The 'fp' stays as default option
in any case.

Examples: (perf compiled with libunwind)

   perf record -g dwarf ls
      - provides dwarf unwind with 8192 as stack dump size

   perf record -g dwarf,4096 ls
      - provides dwarf unwind with 4096 as stack dump size

   perf record -g -- ls
   perf record -g fp ls
      - provides frame pointer unwind

Linus Torvalds
9c2b957db1 Merge branch 'perf-core-for-linus' of git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/tip/tip
Pull perf events changes for v3.4 from Ingo Molnar:

 - New "hardware based branch profiling" feature both on the kernel and
the tooling side, on CPUs that support it. (modern x86 Intel CPUs
with the 'LBR' hardware feature currently.)

This new feature is basically a sophisticated 'magnifying glass' for
branch execution - something that is pretty difficult to extract from
   regular, function histogram centric profiles.

The simplest mode is activated via 'perf record -b', and the result
looks like this in perf report:

	$ perf record -b any_call,u -e cycles:u branchy

	$ perf report -b --sort=symbol
	    52.34% [.] main [.] f1
	    24.04% [.] f1 [.] f3
	    23.60% [.] f1 [.] f2
	     0.01% [k] _IO_new_file_xsputn [k] _IO_file_overflow
	     0.01% [k] _IO_vfprintf_internal [k] _IO_new_file_xsputn
	     0.01% [k] _IO_vfprintf_internal [k] strchrnul
	     0.01% [k] __printf [k] _IO_vfprintf_internal
	     0.01% [k] main [k] __printf

This output shows from/to branch columns and shows the highest
percentage (from,to) jump combinations - i.e. the most likely taken
branches in the system. "branches" can also include function calls
and any other synchronous and asynchronous transitions of the
instruction pointer that are not 'next instruction' - such as system
   calls, traps, interrupts, etc.

This feature comes with (hopefully intuitive) flat ascii and TUI
   support in perf report.

 - Various 'perf annotate' visual improvements for us assembly junkies.
It will now recognize function calls in the TUI and by hitting enter
you can follow the call (recursively) and back, amongst other
   improvements.

 - Multiple threads/processes recording support in perf record, perf
stat, perf top - which is activated via a comma-list of PIDs:

	perf top -p 21483,21485
	perf stat -p 21483,21485 -ddd
	perf record -p 21483,21485

 - Support for per UID views, via the --uid paramter to perf top, perf
report, etc. For example 'perf top --uid mingo' will only show the
tasks that I am running, excluding other users, root, etc.

 - Jump label restructurings and improvements - this includes the
factoring out of the (hopefully much clearer) include/linux/static_key.h
   generic facility:

	struct static_key key = STATIC_KEY_INIT_FALSE;

	...

	if (static_key_false(&key))
	        do unlikely code
	else
	        do likely code

	...
	static_key_slow_inc();
	...
	static_key_slow_inc();
	...

The static_key_false() branch will be generated into the code with as
little impact to the likely code path as possible. the
static_key_slow_*() APIs flip the branch via live kernel code patching.

This facility can now be used more widely within the kernel to
micro-optimize hot branches whose likelihood matches the static-key
   usage and fast/slow cost patterns.

 - SW function tracer improvements: perf support and filtering support.

 - Various hardenings of the perf.data ABI, to make older perf.data's
smoother on newer tool versions, to make new features integrate more
smoothly, to support cross-endian recording/analyzing workflows
   better, etc.

 - Restructuring of the kprobes code, the splitting out of 'optprobes',
   and a corner case bugfix.

 - Allow the tracing of kernel console output (printk).

 - Improvements/fixes to user-space RDPMC support, allowing user-space
self-profiling code to extract PMU counts without performing any
system calls, while playing nice with the kernel side.

 - 'perf bench' improvements

 - ... and lots of internal restructurings, cleanups and fixes that made
these features possible. And, as usual this list is incomplete as
there were also lots of other improvements

eae7a755ee perf tools, x86: Build perf on older user-space as well
On ancient systems I get this build failure:

util/../../../arch/x86/include/asm/unistd.h:67:29: error: asm/unistd_64.h: No such file or directory

perf.h:170: error: ‘__NR_perf_event_open’ undeclared (first use in this function)

The reason is that this old system does not have the split
unistd.h headers yet, from which to pick up the syscall
definitions.

Add the syscall numbers to the already existing i386 and x86_64
blocks in perf.h, and also provide empty include file stubs.

With this patch perf builds and works fine on 5 years old

bdfebd848f perf record: Add support for sampling taken branch
This patch adds a new option to enable taken branch stack
sampling, i.e., leverage the PERF_SAMPLE_BRANCH_STACK feature
of perf_events.

There is a new option to active this mode: -b.
It is possible to pass a set of filters to select the type of
branches to sample.

The following filters are available:

 - any : any type of branches
 - any_call : any function call or system call
 - any_ret : any function return or system call return
 - any_ind : any indirect branch
 - u: only when the branch target is at the user level
 - k: only when the branch target is in the kernel
 - hv: only when the branch target is in the hypervisor

Filters can be combined by passing a comma separated list
to the option:

$ perf record -b any_call,u -e cycles:u branchy

3e76ac78b0 perf record: Add ability to record event period
The problem is that when SAMPLE_PERIOD is not set, the kernel generates
a number of samples in proportion to an event's period. Number of these
samples may be too big and the kernel throttles all samples above a
defined limit.

E.g.: I want to trace when a process sleeps. I created a process which
sleeps for 1ms and for 4ms. perf got 100 events in both cases.

swapper 0 [000] 1141.371830: sched_stat_sleep: comm=foo pid=1801 delay=1386750 [ns]
swapper 0 [000] 1141.369444: sched_stat_sleep: comm=foo pid=1801 delay=4499585 [ns]

In the first case a kernel want to send 4499585 events and in the second
case it wants to send 1386750 events. perf-reports shows that process
sleeps in both places equal time.

Instead of this we can get only one sample with an attribute period. As
result we have less data transferring between kernel and user-space and
we avoid throttling of samples.

The patch "events: Don't divide events if it has field period" added a
kernel part of this functionality.

fbe96f29ce perf tools: Make perf.data more self-descriptive (v8)
The goal of this patch is to include more information about the host
environment into the perf.data so it is more self-descriptive. Overtime,
profiles are captured on various machines and it becomes hard to track
what was recorded, on what machine and when.

This patch provides a way to solve this by extending the perf.data file
with basic information about the host machine. To add those extensions,
we leverage the feature bits capabilities of the perf.data format. The
change is backward compatible with existing perf.data files.

We define the following useful new extensions:
 - HEADER_HOSTNAME: the hostname
 - HEADER_OSRELEASE: the kernel release number
 - HEADER_ARCH: the hw architecture
 - HEADER_CPUDESC: generic CPU description
 - HEADER_NRCPUS: number of online/avail cpus
 - HEADER_CMDLINE: perf command line
 - HEADER_VERSION: perf version
 - HEADER_TOPOLOGY: cpu topology
 - HEADER_EVENT_DESC: full event description (attrs)
 - HEADER_CPUID: easy-to-parse low level CPU identication

The small granularity for the entries is to make it easier to extend
without breaking backward compatiblity. Many entries are provided as
ASCII strings.

Perf report/script have been modified to print the basic information as
easy-to-parse ASCII strings. Extended information about CPU and NUMA
topology may be requested with the -I option.

Thanks to David Ahern for reviewing and testing the many versions of
this patch.

da7196e1f9 perf, ARM: Modify kuser rmb() call to compile for Thumb-2
The Thumb-2 instruction set does not provide an encoding
for sub pc, r0, #95 as present in the rmb() definition used
by perf. This results in compilation failure when using a
compiler targetting an instruction set other than ARM.

This patch redefines rmb() for ARM by casting the address
of the kuser helper to a function pointer, therefore getting
the compiler to take care of making the call.

Patch taken against tip/master.

cdd6c482c9 perf: Do the big rename: Performance Counters -> Performance Events
Bye-bye Performance Counters, welcome Performance Events!

In the past few months the perfcounters subsystem has grown out its
initial role of counting hardware events, and has become (and is
becoming) a much broader generic event enumeration, reporting, logging,
monitoring, analysis facility.

Naming its core object 'perf_counter' and naming the subsystem
'perfcounters' has become more and more of a misnomer. With pending
code like hw-breakpoints support the 'counter' name is less and
less appropriate.

All in one, we've decided to rename the subsystem to 'performance
events' and to propagate this rename through all fields, variables
and API names. (in an ABI compatible fashion)

The word 'event' is also a bit shorter than 'counter' - which makes
it slightly more convenient to write/handle as well.

Thanks goes to Stephane Eranian who first observed this misnomer and
suggested a rename.

User-space tooling and ABI compatibility is not affected - this patch
should be function-invariant. (Also, defconfigs were not touched to
keep the size down.)

This patch has been generated via the following script:

  FILES=$(find * -type f | grep -vE 'oprofile|[^K]config')

  sed -i \
    -e 's/PERF_EVENT_/PERF_RECORD_/g' \
    -e 's/PERF_COUNTER/PERF_EVENT/g' \
    -e 's/perf_counter/perf_event/g' \
    -e 's/nb_counters/nb_events/g' \
    -e 's/swcounter/swevent/g' \
    -e 's/tpcounter_event/tp_event/g' \
    $FILES

  for N in $(find . -name perf_counter.[ch]); do
    M=$(echo $N | sed 's/perf_counter/perf_event/g')
    mv $N $M
  done

  FILES=$(find . -name perf_event.*)

  sed -i \
    -e 's/COUNTER_MASK/REG_MASK/g' \
    -e 's/COUNTER/EVENT/g' \
    -e 's/\<event\>/event_id/g' \
    -e 's/counter/event/g' \
    -e 's/Counter/Event/g' \
    $FILES

... to keep it as correct as possible. This script can also be
used by anyone who has pending perfcounters patches - it converts
a Linux kernel tree over to the new naming. We tried to time this
change to the point in time where the amount of pending patches
is the smallest: the end of the merge window.

Namespace clashes were fixed up in a preparatory patch - and some
stylistic fallout will be fixed up in a subsequent patch.

( NOTE: 'counters' are still the proper terminology when we deal
with hardware registers - and these sed scripts are a bit
over-eager in renaming them. I've undone some of that, but
in case there's something left where 'counter' would be
better than 'event' we can undo that on an individual basis
instead of touching an otherwise nicely automated patch. )

11d1578f94 perf_counter: Add P6 PMU support
Add basic P6 PMU support. The P6 uses the EVNTSEL0 EN bit to
enable/disable both its counters. We use this for the
global enable/disable, and clear all config bits (except EN)
to disable individual counters.

Actual ia32 hardware doesn't support lfence, so use a locked
op without side-effect to implement a full barrier.

perf stat and perf record seem to function correctly.

Enable -Wextra. This found a few real bugs plus a number
of signed/unsigned type mismatches/uncleanlinesses. It
also required a few annotations

All things considered it was still worth it so lets try with
this enabled for now.

8cb76d99d7 perf_counter tools: Prepare a small callchain framework
We plan to display the callchains depending on some user-configurable
parameters.

To gather the callchains stats from the recorded stream in a fast way,
this patch introduces an ad hoc radix tree adapted for callchains and also
a rbtree to sort these callchains once we have gathered every events
from the stream.

9cffa8d533 perf_counter tools: Define and use our own u64, s64 etc. definitions
On 64-bit powerpc, __u64 is defined to be unsigned long rather than
unsigned long long. This causes compiler warnings every time we
print a __u64 value with %Lx.

Rather than changing __u64, we define our own u64 to be unsigned long
long on all architectures, and similarly s64 as signed long long.
For consistency we also define u32, s32, u16, s16, u8 and s8. These
definitions are put in a new header, types.h, because these definitions
are needed in util/string.h and util/symbol.h.

The main change here is the mechanical change of __[us]{64,32,16,8}
to remove the "__". The other changes are:

* Create types.h
* Include types.h in perf.h, util/string.h and util/symbol.h
* Add types.h to the LIB_H definition in Makefile
* Added (u64) casts in process_overflow_event() and print_sym_table()
  to kill two remaining warnings.

974802eaa1 perf_counter: Add forward/backward attribute ABI compatibility
Provide for means of extending the perf_counter_attr in a 'natural' way.

We allow growing the structure by appending fields at the end by specifying
the full structure size inside it.

When a new kernel sees a smaller (old) structure, it will 0 pad the tail.
When an old kernel sees a larger (new) structure, it will verify the tail
consists of 0s, otherwise fail.

If we fail due to a size-mismatch, we return -E2BIG and write the kernel's
native attribe size back into the provided structure.

Furthermore, add some attribute verification, so that we'll fail counter
creation when unknown bits are present (PERF_SAMPLE, PERF_FORMAT, or in
the __reserved fields).

(This ABI detail is introduced while keeping the existing syscall ABI.)
