User space callchains and user space stack dump were disabled

Catching up with perf and disabling user space callchains and
DWARF unwind (uses user stack dump) for function trace event.

Adding following warnings when callchains are used
for function trace event:

  # perf record -g -e ftrace:function ...
  Disabling user space callchains for function trace event.
  ...

  # ./perf record --call-graph=dwarf -e ftrace:function ...
  Cannot use DWARF unwind for function trace event, falling back to framepointers.
  Disabling user space callchains for function trace event.
  ...

410136f5dd tools/perf/stat: Add event unit and scale support
This patch adds perf stat support for handling event units and
scales as exported by the kernel.

The kernel can export PMU events actual unit and scaling factor
via sysfs:

  $ ls -1 /sys/devices/power/events/energy-*

  /sys/devices/power/events/energy-cores.scale

This patch modifies the pmu event alias code to check
for the presence of the .unit and .scale files to load
the corresponding values. They are then used by perf stat
transparently:

When the event does not have an explicit unit exported by
the kernel, nothing is printed. In csv output mode, there
will be an empty field.

ef503831d8 perf evsel: Remove idx parm from constructor
Most uses of the evsel constructor are followed by a call to
perf_evlist__add with an idex of evlist->nr_entries, so make rename
the current constructor to perf_evsel__new_idx and remove the need
for passing the constructor for the common case.

We still need the new_idx variant because the way groups are handled,
with evsel->nr_members holding the number of entries in an evlist,
partitioning the evlist into sublists inside a single linked list.

This asks for a clarifying refactoring, but for now simplify the non
parser cases, so that tool writers don't have to bother with evsel idx
setting.

4cabc3d1cb tools/perf/stat: Add perf stat --transaction
Add support to perf stat to print the basic transactional execution statistics:
Total cycles, Cycles in Transaction, Cycles in aborted transsactions
using the in_tx and in_tx_checkpoint qualifiers.
Transaction Starts and Elision Starts, to compute the average transaction
length.

This is a reasonable overview over the success of the transactions.

Also support architectures that have a transaction aborted cycles
counter like POWER8. Since that is awkward to handle in the kernel
abstract handle both cases here.

Enable with a new --transaction / -T option.

This requires measuring these events in a group, since they depend on each
other.

This is implemented by using TM sysfs events exported by the kernel

Enable parsing of samples with sample format bit PERF_SAMPLE_IDENTIFIER.
In addition, if the kernel supports it, prefer it to selecting

3c1763115b perf tools: Add 'S' event/group modifier to read sample value
Adding 'S' event/group modifier to specify that the event value/s are
read by PERF_SAMPLE_READ sample type processing, instead of the period
value offered by lower layers.

There's additional behaviour change for 'S' modifier being specified on
event group:

Currently all the events within a group makes samples. If user now
specifies 'S' within group modifier, only the leader will trigger
samples. The rest of events in the group will have sampling disabled.

And same as for single events, values of all events within the group
(including leader) are read by PERF_SAMPLE_READ sample type processing.

Following example will create event group with cycles and cache-misses
events, setting the cycles as group leader and the only event to
actually sample. Both cycles and cache-misses event period values are
read by PERF_SAMPLE_READ sample type processing with PERF_FORMAT_GROUP
read format.

e4caec0d1a perf evsel: Add PERF_SAMPLE_READ sample related processing
For sample with sample type PERF_SAMPLE_READ the period value is stored
in the 'struct sample_read'.

Moreover if the read format has PERF_FORMAT_GROUP, the 'struct
sample_read' contains period values for all events in the group (for
which the sample's event is a leader).

We deliver separated samples for all the values contained within the
'struct sample_read'.

a7e191c376 perf stat: Introduce --repeat forever
The following patch causes 'perf stat --repeat 0' to be interpreted as
'forever', displaying the stats for every run.

We act as if a single run was asked, and reset the stats in each
iteration. In this mode SIGINT is passed to perf to be able to stop the
loop with Ctrl+C.

759ff497e0 perf evsel: Introduce perf_evsel__is_group_event() helper
The perf_evsel__is_group_event function is for checking whether given
evsel needs event group view support or not.  Please note that it's
different to the existing perf_evsel__is_group_leader() which checks
only the given evsel is a leader or a standalone (i.e. non-group) event
regardless of event group feature.

Add a few of group-related field in struct perf_{evlist,evsel} so that
the group information in a evlist can be known easily.  It only counts
groups which have more than 1 members since leader-only groups are
treated as non-group events.

The only fallback right now is for HW cpu-cycles -> SW cpu-clock, that
was done in the same way in both 'top' and 'record'.

7a5a5ca5fe perf evsel: Introduce method to request IDs be used
When mmaping multiple events we need to find the right evsel that
matches an event in the ring buffer.

For that we need to set the PERF_FORMAT_ID bit in
perf_event_attr.read_format so that when we read the event fds we get
that id to then hash it and be able later to use perf_evlist__id2evsel
to find the right evsel.

We also need to set the PERF_SAMPLE_ID bit in
perf_event_attr.sample_type to ask for that id to be stashed in each
sample, so that we can demux it.

So add a perf_evsel__set_sample_id() method to do those two things in
one operation.

7be5ebe876 perf evsel: Update sample_size when setting sample_type bits
We use evsel->sample_size to detect underflows in
perf_evsel__parse_sample, but we were failing to update it after
perf_evsel__init(), i.e. when we decide, after creating an evsel, that
we want some extra field bit set.

Fix it by introducing methods to set a bit that will take care of
correctly adjusting evsel->sample_size.

d2709c7ce4 perf: Make perf build for x86 with UAPI disintegration applied
Make perf build for x86 once the UAPI disintegration patches for that arch
have been applied by adding the appropriate -I flags - in the right order -
and then converting some #includes that use ../.. notation to find main kernel
headerfiles to use <asm/foo.h> and <linux/foo.h> instead.

Note that -Iarch/foo/include/uapi is present _before_ -Iarch/foo/include.
This makes sure we get the userspace version of the pt_regs struct.  Ideally,
we wouldn't have the latter -I flag at all, but unfortunately we want
asm/svm.h and asm/vmx.h in builtin-kvm.c and these aren't part of the UAPI -
at least not for x86.  I wonder if the bits outside of the __KERNEL__ guards
*should* be transferred there.

I note also that perf seems to do its dependency handling manually by listing
all the header files it might want to use in LIB_H in the Makefile.  Can this
be changed to use -MD?

Note that to do make this work, we need to export and UAPI disintegrate
linux/hw_breakpoint.h, which I think should've been exported previously so that
perf can access the bits.  We have to do this in the same patch to maintain
bisectability.

cac2142557 perf tools: Fix attributes for '{}' defined event groups
Fixing events attributes for groups defined via '{}'.

Currently 'enable_on_exec' attribute in record command and both
'disabled ' and 'enable_on_exec' attributes in stat command are set
based on the 'group' option. This eliminates proper setup for '{}'
defined groups as they don't set 'group' option.

Making above attributes values based on the 'evsel->leader' as this is
common to both group definition.

Moving perf_evlist__set_leader call within builtin-record ahead
perf_evlist__config_attrs call, because the latter needs possible group
leader links in place.

efd2b924d3 perf evsel: Provide a new constructor for tracepoints
The existing constructor receives a perf_event_attr filled with the
event type and the config.

To reduce the boilerplate for tracepoints, provide a new constructor,
perf_evsel__newtp() that receives the tracepoint name and will open
the debugfs file, call into libtraceevent new pevent_parse_format file
to fill its ->tp_format member, so that users can then just call
perf_evsel__field() to access its fields.

Putting 'perf diff' command back on track with the 'latest'
evsel hists changes. Each evsel has its own 'hists' object
gathering stats for the particular event.

While currently counts are accumulated for the whole session
regardless of the events diversification within compared
sessions.

The 'perf diff' command now outputs all matching events within
compared sessions (with event name specified). The per event
diff output stays the same.

8ad7013b25 perf test: Add round trip test for sw and hw event names
It basically traverses the hardware and software event name arrays
creating an evlist with all events, then it uses perf_evsel__name to
check that the name is the expected one.

With it I noticed this problem:

[root@sandy ~]# perf test 10
10: roundtrip evsel->name check:invalid or unsupported event: 'CPU-migrations'
Run 'perf list' for a list of valid events
 FAILED!

Changed it to "cpu-migrations" in the software event arrays and it
worked.

This is to catch problems like the one reported by Joel Uckelman in
http://permalink.gmane.org/gmane.linux.kernel.perf.user/1016

Hardware cache events will be checked in the following patch.

f4d834367c perf tools: Fix type for evsel->ids and add size check for ids
Use same type for ids everywhere.

In case of writing to perf.data the size is u32. In pipe mode it is
limited to header.size (less than u16). Adding a size check here.

Size overflow due to casting shouldn't actually happen in practice, but
during development this may cause type missmatch warninngs/errors,
unifying types avoids this.

6a4bb04caa perf tools: Enable grouping logic for parsed events
This patch adds a functionality that allows to create event groups
based on the way they are specified on the command line. Adding
functionality to the '{}' group syntax introduced in earlier patch.

The current '--group/-g' option behaviour remains intact. If you
specify it for record/stat/top command, all the specified events
become members of a single group with the first event as a group
leader.

With the new '{}' group syntax you can create group like:
  # perf record -e '{cycles,faults}' ls

resulting in single event group containing 'cycles' and 'faults'
events, with cycles event as group leader.

All groups are created with regards to threads and cpus. Thus
recording an event group within a 2 threads on server with
4 CPUs will create 8 separate groups.

Examples (first event in brackets is group leader):

  # 1 group (cpu-clock,task-clock)
  perf record --group -e cpu-clock,task-clock ls
  perf record -e '{cpu-clock,task-clock}' ls

  # 2 groups (cpu-clock,task-clock) (minor-faults,major-faults)

over all events in the group and updates each event modifier settings,

f5b1135bf7 perf tools: Add support to update event modifier
Adding support to update already defined event's attribute with
event modifier. This change will allow to use group modifier as
an update to the existing event modifiers.

Adding 'add' parameter to the parse_events__modifier_event function.
Calling it with 'add' = false/true, the event modifier is
initialized/updated respectively.

Added exclude_GH flag to evsel struct, because we need to remember
if one of 'GH' modifiers was used for event. The reason is that the
default settings for exclude_guest is 1 and during the group
modifier processing we have no other way of knowing if it was set
by default or by event modifier.

Keeping the current behaviour, that any event/group modifier reset
the defaults for exclude_host (0) and exclude_guest (1).

fcf65bf149 perf evsel: Cache associated event_format
We already lookup the associated event_format when reading the perf.data
header, so that we can cache the tracepoint name in evsel->name, so do
it a little further and save the event_format itself, so that we can
avoid relookups in tools that need to access it.

Change the tools to take the most obvious advantage, when they were
using pevent_find_event directly. More work is needed for further
removing the need of a pointer to pevent, such as when asking for event
field values ("common_pid" and the other common fields and per
event_format fields).

This is something that was planned but only got actually done when
Andrey Wagin needed to do this lookup at perf_tool->sample() time, when
we don't have access to pevent (session->pevent) to use with
pevent_find_event().
