TP_printk defines a format string that is passed to user space for
converting raw trace event records to something human-readable.
My user space's printf (Oracle Linux 7), however, does not have a
%pI format specifier. The result is that what is supposed to be an
IP address in the output of "trace-cmd report" is just a string that
says the field couldn't be displayed.
To fix this, adopt the same approach as the client: maintain a pre-
formated presentation address for occasions when %pI is not
available.
The location of the trace_svc_send trace point is adjusted so that
rqst->rq_xprt is not NULL when the trace event is recorded.

There doesn't seem to be a lot of value in calling trace_svc_recv
in the failing case.
1. There are two very common cases: one is the transport is not
ready, and the other is shutdown. Neither is terribly interesting.
2. The trace record for the failing case contains nothing but
the status code.
Therefore the trace point call site in the error exit is removed.
Since the trace point is now recording a length instead of a
status, rename the status field and remove the case that records a
zero XID.

Reduce the amount of noise generated by trace_svc_xprt_dequeue by
moving it to the end of svc_get_next_xprt. This generates exactly
one trace event when a ready xprt is found, rather than spurious
events when there is no work to do. The empty events contain no
information that can't be obtained simply by tracing function calls
to svc_xprt_dequeue.
A small additional benefit is simplification of the svc_xprt_event
trace class, which no longer has to handle the case when the @xprt
parameter is NULL.

This removes the entire architecture code for blackfin, cris, frv, m32r,
metag, mn10300, score, and tile, including the associated device drivers.
I have been working with the (former) maintainers for each one to ensure
that my interpretation was right and the code is definitely unused in
mainline kernels. Many had fond memories of working on the respective
ports to start with and getting them included in upstream, but also saw
no point in keeping the port alive without any users.
In the end, it seems that while the eight architectures are extremely
different, they all suffered the same fate: There was one company
in charge of an SoC line, a CPU microarchitecture and a software
ecosystem, which was more costly than licensing newer off-the-shelf
CPU cores from a third party (typically ARM, MIPS, or RISC-V). It seems
that all the SoC product lines are still around, but have not used the
custom CPU architectures for several years at this point. In contrast,
CPU instruction sets that remain popular and have actively maintained
kernel ports tend to all be used across multiple licensees.
The removal came out of a discussion that is now documented at
https://lwn.net/Articles/748074/. Unlike the original plans, I'm not
marking any ports as deprecated but remove them all at once after I made
sure that they are all unused. Some architectures (notably tile, mn10300,
and blackfin) are still being shipped in products with old kernels,
but those products will never be updated to newer kernel releases.
After this series, we still have a few architectures without mainline
gcc support:
- unicore32 and hexagon both have very outdated gcc releases, but the
maintainers promised to work on providing something newer. At least
in case of hexagon, this will only be llvm, not gcc.
- openrisc, risc-v and nds32 are still in the process of finishing their
support or getting it added to mainline gcc in the first place.
They all have patched gcc-7.3 ports that work to some degree, but
complete upstream support won't happen before gcc-8.1. Csky posted
their first kernel patch set last week, their situation will be similar.

pull-request: bpf-next 2018-03-31
The following pull-request contains BPF updates for your *net-next* tree.
The main changes are:
1) Add raw BPF tracepoint API in order to have a BPF program type that
can access kernel internal arguments of the tracepoints in their
raw form similar to kprobes based BPF programs. This infrastructure
also adds a new BPF_RAW_TRACEPOINT_OPEN command to BPF syscall which
returns an anon-inode backed fd for the tracepoint object that allows
for automatic detach of the BPF program resp. unregistering of the
tracepoint probe on fd release, from Alexei.
2) Add new BPF cgroup hooks at bind() and connect() entry in order to
allow BPF programs to reject, inspect or modify user space passed
struct sockaddr, and as well a hook at post bind time once the port
has been allocated. They are used in FB's container management engine
for implementing policy, replacing fragile LD_PRELOAD wrapper
intercepting bind() and connect() calls that only works in limited
scenarios like glibc based apps but not for other runtimes in
containerized applications, from Andrey.
3) BPF_F_INGRESS flag support has been added to sockmap programs for
their redirect helper call bringing it in line with cls_bpf based
programs. Support is added for both variants of sockmap programs,
meaning for tx ULP hooks as well as recv skb hooks, from John.
4) Various improvements on BPF side for the nfp driver, besides others
this work adds BPF map update and delete helper call support from
the datapath, JITing of 32 and 64 bit XADD instructions as well as
offload support of bpf_get_prandom_u32() call. Initial implementation
of nfp packet cache has been tackled that optimizes memory access
(see merge commit for further details), from Jakub and Jiong.
5) Removal of struct bpf_verifier_env argument from the print_bpf_insn()
API has been done in order to prepare to use print_bpf_insn() soon
out of perf tool directly. This makes the print_bpf_insn() API more
generic and pushes the env into private data. bpftool is adjusted
as well with the print_bpf_insn() argument removal, from Jiri.
6) Couple of cleanups and prep work for the upcoming BTF (BPF Type
Format). The latter will reuse the current BPF verifier log as
well, thus bpf_verifier_log() is further generalized, from Martin.
7) For bpf_getsockopt() and bpf_setsockopt() helpers, IPv4 IP_TOS read
and write support has been added in similar fashion to existing
IPv6 IPV6_TCLASS socket option we already have, from Nikita.
8) Fixes in recent sockmap scatterlist API usage, which did not use
sg_init_table() for initialization thus triggering a BUG_ON() in
scatterlist API when CONFIG_DEBUG_SG was enabled. This adds and
uses a small helper sg_init_marker() to properly handle the affected
cases, from Prashant.
9) Let the BPF core follow IDR code convention and therefore use the
idr_preload() and idr_preload_end() helpers, which would also help
idr_alloc_cyclic() under GFP_ATOMIC to better succeed under memory
pressure, from Shaohua.
10) Last but not least, a spelling fix in an error message for the
BPF cookie UID helper under BPF sample code, from Colin.

Btrfs uses 2 different methods to reseve metadata qgroup space.
1) Reserve at btrfs_start_transaction() time
This is quite straightforward, caller will use the trans handler
allocated to modify b-trees.
In this case, reserved metadata should be kept until qgroup numbers
are updated.
2) Reserve by using block_rsv first, and later btrfs_join_transaction()
This is more complicated, caller will reserve space using block_rsv
first, and then later call btrfs_join_transaction() to get a trans
handle.
In this case, before we modify trees, the reserved space can be
modified on demand, and after btrfs_join_transaction(), such reserved
space should also be kept until qgroup numbers are updated.
Since these two types behave differently, split the original "META"
reservation type into 2 sub-types:
META_PERTRANS:
For above case 1)
META_PREALLOC:
For reservations that happened before btrfs_join_transaction() of
case 2)
NOTE: This patch will only convert existing qgroup meta reservation
callers according to its situation, not ensuring all callers are at
correct timing.
Such fix will be added in later patches.

- fix trace_hfi1_ctxt_info() to pass large struct by reference instead of by value
- convert 'type array[]' tracepoint arguments into 'type *array',
since compiler will warn that sizeof('type array[]') == sizeof('type *array')
and later should be used instead
The CAST_TO_U64 macro in the later patch will enforce that tracepoint
arguments can only be integers, pointers, or less than 8 byte structures.
Larger structures should be passed by reference.

In rxrpc and afs, use the debug_ids that are monotonically allocated to
various objects as they're allocated rather than pointers as kernel
pointers are now hashed making them less useful. Further, the debug ids
aren't reused anywhere nearly as quickly.
In addition, allow kernel services that use rxrpc, such as afs, to take
numbers from the rxrpc counter, assign them to their own call struct and
pass them in to rxrpc for both client and service calls so that the trace
lines for each will have the same ID tag.

Here is the big pull request for char/misc drivers for 4.16-rc1.
There's a lot of stuff in here. Three new driver subsystems were added
for various types of hardware busses:
- siox
- slimbus
- soundwire
as well as a new vboxguest subsystem for the VirtualBox hypervisor
drivers.
There's also big updates from the FPGA subsystem, lots of Android binder
fixes, the usual handful of hyper-v updates, and lots of other smaller
driver updates.

"Here is the big pull request for char/misc drivers for 4.16-rc1.
There's a lot of stuff in here. Three new driver subsystems were added
for various types of hardware busses:
- siox
- slimbus
- soundwire
as well as a new vboxguest subsystem for the VirtualBox hypervisor

Previously we were using the ratio of the number of lru pages scanned to
the number of eligible lru pages to determine the number of slab objects
to scan. The problem with this is that these two things have nothing to
do with each other, so in slab heavy work loads where there is little to
no page cache we can end up with the pages scanned being a very low
number. This means that we reclaim next to no slab pages and waste a
lot of time reclaiming small amounts of space.
Consider the following scenario, where we have the following values and
the rest of the memory usage is in slab
Active: 58840 kB
Inactive: 46860 kB
Every time we do a get_scan_count() we do this
scan = size >> sc->priority
where sc->priority starts at DEF_PRIORITY, which is 12. The first loop
through reclaim would result in a scan target of 2 pages to 11715 total
inactive pages, and 3 pages to 14710 total active pages. This is a
really really small target for a system that is entirely slab pages.
And this is super optimistic, this assumes we even get to scan these
pages. We don't increment sc->nr_scanned unless we 1) isolate the page,
which assumes it's not in use, and 2) can lock the page. Under pressure
these numbers could probably go down, I'm sure there's some random pages
from daemons that aren't actually in use, so the targets get even
smaller.
Instead use sc->priority in the same way we use it to determine scan
amounts for the lru's. This generally equates to pages. Consider the
following
slab_pages = (nr_objects * object_size) / PAGE_SIZE
What we would like to do is
scan = slab_pages >> sc->priority
but we don't know the number of slab pages each shrinker controls, only
the objects. However say that theoretically we knew how many pages a
shrinker controlled, we'd still have to convert this to objects, which
would look like the following
scan = shrinker_pages >> sc->priority
scan_objects = (PAGE_SIZE / object_size) * scan
or written another way
scan_objects = (shrinker_pages >> sc->priority) *
(PAGE_SIZE / object_size)
which can thus be written
scan_objects = ((shrinker_pages * PAGE_SIZE) / object_size) >>
sc->priority
which is just
scan_objects = nr_objects >> sc->priority
We don't need to know exactly how many pages each shrinker represents,
it's objects are all the information we need. Making this change allows
us to place an appropriate amount of pressure on the shrinker pools for
their relative size.

- A rather large rework of the hrtimer infrastructure which
introduces softirq based hrtimers to replace the spread of

initial implementation which you cursed at 10 years ago rightfully.
The softirq based timers have their own queues and there is no

Commit 9036c10208 ("Btrfs: update hole handling v2") added the
FLAG_VACANCY to denote holes, however there was already a consistent way
of flagging extents which represent hole - ->block_start =
EXTENT_MAP_HOLE. And also the only place where this flag is checked is
in the fiemap code, but the block_start value is also checked and every
other place in the filesystem detects holes by using block_start
value's. So remove the extra flag. This survived a full xfstest run.

Currently hrtimer callback functions are always executed in hard interrupt
context. Users of hrtimers, which need their timer function to be executed
in soft interrupt context, make use of tasklets to get the proper context.
Add additional hrtimer clock bases for timers which must expire in softirq
context, so the detour via the tasklet can be avoided. This is also
required for RT, where the majority of hrtimer is moved into softirq
hrtimer context.
The selection of the expiry mode happens via a mode bit. Introduce
HRTIMER_MODE_SOFT and the matching combinations with the ABS/REL/PINNED
bits and update the decoding of hrtimer_mode in tracepoints.

So far only CLOCK_MONOTONIC and CLOCK_REALTIME were taken into account as
well as HRTIMER_MODE_ABS/REL in the hrtimer_init tracepoint. The query for
detecting the ABS or REL timer modes is not valid anymore, it got broken
by the introduction of HRTIMER_MODE_PINNED.
HRTIMER_MODE_PINNED is not evaluated in the hrtimer_init() call, but for the
sake of completeness print all given modes.

As of now, there're two sk_family are traced with sock:inet_sock_set_state,

So the sk_family are exposed as well.
Then we can conveniently use it to do the filter.
Both sk_family and sk_protocol are showed in the printk message, so we need
not expose them as tracepoint arguments.

Add SCTP ACK tracking trace event to trace the changes of SCTP
association state in response to incoming packets.
It is used for debugging SCTP congestion control algorithms,
and will replace sctp_probe module.
Note that this event a bit tricky. Since this consists of 2
events (sctp_probe and sctp_probe_path) so you have to enable
both events as below.
# cd /sys/kernel/debug/tracing
# echo 1 > events/sctp/sctp_probe/enable
# echo 1 > events/sctp/sctp_probe_path/enable
Or, you can enable all the events under sctp.
# echo 1 > events/sctp/enable
Since sctp_probe_path event is always invoked from sctp_probe
event, you can not see any output if you only enable
sctp_probe_path.

Using a preprocessor directive to check for CONFIG_IPV6 in the middle of
a DECLARE_EVENT_CLASS macro's arg list causes sparse to report a series
of errors:
./include/trace/events/tcp.h:68:1: error: directive in argument list
./include/trace/events/tcp.h:75:1: error: directive in argument list
./include/trace/events/tcp.h:144:1: error: directive in argument list
./include/trace/events/tcp.h:151:1: error: directive in argument list
./include/trace/events/tcp.h:216:1: error: directive in argument list
./include/trace/events/tcp.h:223:1: error: directive in argument list
./include/trace/events/tcp.h:274:1: error: directive in argument list
./include/trace/events/tcp.h:281:1: error: directive in argument list
Once sparse finds an error, it stops printing warnings for the file it
is checking. This masks any sparse warnings that would normally be
reported for the core TCP code.
Instead, handle the preprocessor conditionals in a couple of auxiliary
macros. This also has the benefit of reducing duplicate code.

- We had a NULL pointer deref in an old clk tracepoint when clk_set_parent()

it's best to avoid this regardless.
- The sun9i-mmc clk driver didn't provide 'reset' support, just 'assert'

As sk_state is a common field for struct sock, so the state
transition tracepoint should not be a TCP specific feature.
Currently it traces all AF_INET state transition, so I rename this
tracepoint to inet_sock_set_state tracepoint with some minor changes and move it
into trace/events/sock.h.
We dont need to create a file named trace/events/inet_sock.h for this one single
tracepoint.
Two helpers are introduced to trace sk_state transition
- void inet_sk_state_store(struct sock *sk, int newstate);
- void inet_sk_set_state(struct sock *sk, int state);
As trace header should not be included in other header files,
so they are defined in sock.c.
The protocol such as SCTP maybe compiled as a ko, hence export
inet_sk_set_state().

The TCP trace events (specifically tcp_set_state), maps emums to symbol
names via __print_symbolic(). But this only works for reading trace events
from the tracefs trace files. If perf or trace-cmd were to record these
events, the event format file does not convert the enum names into numbers,
and you get something like:
__print_symbolic(REC->oldstate,
{ TCP_ESTABLISHED, "TCP_ESTABLISHED" },
{ TCP_SYN_SENT, "TCP_SYN_SENT" },
{ TCP_SYN_RECV, "TCP_SYN_RECV" },
{ TCP_FIN_WAIT1, "TCP_FIN_WAIT1" },
{ TCP_FIN_WAIT2, "TCP_FIN_WAIT2" },
{ TCP_TIME_WAIT, "TCP_TIME_WAIT" },
{ TCP_CLOSE, "TCP_CLOSE" },
{ TCP_CLOSE_WAIT, "TCP_CLOSE_WAIT" },
{ TCP_LAST_ACK, "TCP_LAST_ACK" },
{ TCP_LISTEN, "TCP_LISTEN" },
{ TCP_CLOSING, "TCP_CLOSING" },

The path of patched vmmcall will patch 3 bytes opcode 0F 01 C1(vmcall)
to the guest memory, however, write_mmio tracepoint always prints 8 bytes
through *(u64 *)val since kvm splits the mmio access into 8 bytes. This
leaks 5 bytes from the kernel stack (CVE-2017-17741). This patch fixes
it by just accessing the bytes which we operate on.

Before this patch the bridge used a fixed 256 element hash table which
was fine for small use cases (in my tests it starts to degrade
above 1000 entries), but it wasn't enough for medium or large
scale deployments. Modern setups have thousands of participants in a
single bridge, even only enabling vlans and adding a few thousand vlan
entries will cause a few thousand fdbs to be automatically inserted per
participating port. So we need to scale the fdb table considerably to
cope with modern workloads, and this patch converts it to use a
rhashtable for its operations thus improving the bridge scalability.
Tests show the following results (10 runs each), at up to 1000 entries
rhashtable is ~3% slower, at 2000 rhashtable is 30% faster, at 3000 it
is 2 times faster and at 30000 it is 50 times faster.
Obviously this happens because of the properties of the two constructs
and is expected, rhashtable keeps pretty much a constant time even with
10000000 entries (tested), while the fixed hash table struggles
considerably even above 10000.
As a side effect this also reduces the net_bridge struct size from 3248
bytes to 1344 bytes. Also note that the key struct is 8 bytes.

trace_preempt_enable_rcuidle(a0, a1);
The problem is that trace_preempt_enable_rcuidle() has different
definition based on multiple Kconfig symbols, but not all combinations
have a valid definition.
This changes the conditions so that we always get exactly one
definition of each of the four tracing macros. I have not tried
to verify that these definitions are sensible, but now we
can build all randconfig combinations again.

pull-request: bpf 2017-12-02
The following pull-request contains BPF updates for your *net* tree.
The main changes are:
1) Fix a compilation warning in xdp redirect tracepoint due to
missing bpf.h include that pulls in struct bpf_map, from Xie.
2) Limit the maximum number of attachable BPF progs for a given
perf event as long as uabi is not frozen yet. The hard upper
limit is now 64 and therefore the same as with BPF multi-prog
for cgroups. Also add related error checking for the sample
BPF loader when enabling and attaching to the perf event, from
Yonghong.
3) Specifically set the RLIMIT_MEMLOCK for the test_verifier_log
case, so that the test case can always pass and not fail in
some environments due to too low default limit, also from
Yonghong.
4) Fix up a missing license header comment for kernel/bpf/offload.c,
from Jakub.
5) Several fixes for bpftool, among others a crash on incorrect
arguments when json output is used, error message handling
fixes on unknown options and proper destruction of json writer
for some exit cases, all from Quentin.

The code that checks for non-idle non-nohz_idle-usermode tasks invoking
rcu_eqs_enter() and rcu_eqs_exit() prints a considerable quantity of

Because the ->dynticks_nesting field now only contains the process-based

RxRPC service endpoints expire like they're supposed to by the following
means:
(1) Mark dead rxrpc_net structs (with ->live) rather than twiddling the
global service conn timeout, otherwise the first rxrpc_net struct to
die will cause connections on all others to expire immediately from
then on.
(2) Mark local service endpoints for which the socket has been closed
(->service_closed) so that the expiration timeout can be much
shortened for service and client connections going through that
endpoint.
(3) rxrpc_put_service_conn() needs to schedule the reaper when the usage
count reaches 1, not 0, as idle conns have a 1 count.
(4) The accumulator for the earliest time we might want to schedule for
should be initialised to jiffies + MAX_JIFFY_OFFSET, not ULONG_MAX as
the comparison functions use signed arithmetic.
(5) Simplify the expiration handling, adding the expiration value to the
idle timestamp each time rather than keeping track of the time in the
past before which the idle timestamp must go to be expired. This is
much easier to read.
(6) Ignore the timeouts if the net namespace is dead.
(7) Restart the service reaper work item rather the client reaper.

We need to transmit a packet every so often to act as a keepalive for the
peer (which has a timeout from the last time it received a packet) and also
to prevent any intervening firewalls from closing the route.
Do this by resetting a timer every time we transmit a packet. If the timer
ever expires, we transmit a PING ACK packet and thereby also elicit a PING
RESPONSE ACK from the other side - which prevents our last-rx timeout from
expiring.
The timer is set to 1/6 of the last-rx timeout so that we can detect the
other side going away if it misses 6 replies in a row.
This is particularly necessary for servers where the processing of the
service function may take a significant amount of time.
Signed-off-by: David Howells <dhowells@redhat.com>
Add an extra timeout that is set/updated when we send a DATA packet that
has the request-ack flag set. This allows us to detect if we don't get an
ACK in response to the latest flagged packet.
The ACK packet is adjudged to have been lost if it doesn't turn up within
2*RTT of the transmission.
If the timeout occurs, we schedule the sending of a PING ACK to find out
the state of the other side. If a new DATA packet is ready to go sooner,
we cancel the sending of the ping and set the request-ack flag on that
instead.
If we get back a PING-RESPONSE ACK that indicates a lower tx_top than what
we had at the time of the ping transmission, we adjudge all the DATA
packets sent between the response tx_top and the ping-time tx_top to have
been lost and retransmit immediately.
Rather than sending a PING ACK, we could just pick a DATA packet and
speculatively retransmit that with request-ack set. It should result in
either a REQUESTED ACK or a DUPLICATE ACK which we can then use in lieu the
a PING-RESPONSE ACK mentioned above.

Fix the rxrpc call expiration timeouts and make them settable from
userspace. By analogy with other rx implementations, there should be three
timeouts:
(1) "Normal timeout"
This is set for all calls and is triggered if we haven't received any
packets from the peer in a while. It is measured from the last time
we received any packet on that call. This is not reset by any
connection packets (such as CHALLENGE/RESPONSE packets).
If a service operation takes a long time, the server should generate
PING ACKs at a duration that's substantially less than the normal
timeout so is to keep both sides alive. This is set at 1/6 of normal
timeout.
(2) "Idle timeout"
This is set only for a service call and is triggered if we stop
receiving the DATA packets that comprise the request data. It is
measured from the last time we received a DATA packet.
(3) "Hard timeout"
This can be set for a call and specified the maximum lifetime of that
call. It should not be specified by default. Some operations (such
as volume transfer) take a long time.
Allow userspace to set/change the timeouts on a call with sendmsg, using a
control message:
RXRPC_SET_CALL_TIMEOUTS
The data to the message is a number of 32-bit words, not all of which need
be given:
u32 hard_timeout; /* sec from first packet */
u32 idle_timeout; /* msec from packet Rx */
u32 normal_timeout; /* msec from data Rx */
This can be set in combination with any other sendmsg() that affects a
call.

The recent conversion of the task state recording to use task_state_index()
broke the sched_switch tracepoint task state output.
task_state_index() returns surprisingly an index (0-7) which is then
printed with __print_flags() applying bitmasks. Not really working and
resulting in weird states like 'prev_state=t' instead of 'prev_state=I'.
Use TASK_REPORT_MAX instead of TASK_STATE_MAX to report preemption. Build a
bitmask from the return value of task_state_index() and store it in
entry->prev_state, which makes __print_flags() work as expected.
