The difference between extra-y and always-y is obscure.
Basically, Kbuild builds targets listed in extra-y and always-y in
visited Makefiles without relying on any dependency.
The difference is that extra-y is used to list the targets needed for
vmlinux whereas always-y is used to list the targets that must be always
built irrespective of final targets.
Kbuild skips extra-y when it is building only modules (i.e.
'make modules'). This is the long-standing behavior since extra-y was
introduced in 2003, and it is explained in that commit log [1].
For clarification, this is the extra-y vs always-y table:
extra-y always-y

'make vmlinux' y y
'make modules' n y
Kbuild skips extra-y also when building external modules since obviously
it never builds vmlinux.
Unfortunately, extra-y is wrongly used in many places of upstream code,
and even in external modules.
Using extra-y in external module Makefiles is wrong. What you should
use is probably always-y or 'targets'.
The current documentation for extra-y is misleading. I rewrote it, and
moved it to the section 3.7.
always-y is not documented anywhere. I added.

The if_changed macro is currently explained in the section
"Commands useful for building a boot image", but the use of
if_changed is not limited to the boot image.
It is often used together with custom rules. Let's split it as a
separate section, and insert it after the "Custom Rules" section.
I slightly reworded the explanation, re-numbered to fill the <deleted>
section, and also fixed the broken indentation of the Note: part.

The two sections "3.10 Special Rules" and "7.8 Custom kbuild commands"
are related because you must understand both of them when you write
custom rules.
Actually I do not understand the policy about what to go into
"3 The kbuild files" and what into "7 Architecture Makefile".
This commit reworks the custom rule explanation as follows:
- Merged "7.8 Custom kbuild commands" into "3.10 Special Rules".
- Reword "Special Rules" to "Custom Rules" for consistency.
- Update the example for kecho because the blackfin Makefile
does not exist any more.
- Replace the example for cmd_<command> with a simpler one.

Fix stale information:
- Fix the section number in the reference from 6.4 to 7.4.
- Remove init-y and net-y. They were removed by commit 23febe375d
("kbuild: merge init-y into core-y") and commit 95fb6317b3
("kbuild: merge net-y and virt-y into drivers-y"), respectively.
- Update the example because arch/sparc64/Makefile does not exit.

Precisely speaking, the arch directory is specified by $(SRCARCH),
not $(ARCH).
In old days, $(ARCH) actually matched to the arch directory because
32-bit and 64-bit were supported as separate architectures.
Most architectures (except arm/arm64) were unified like follows:
arch/i386, arch/x86_64 -> arch/x86
arch/sh, arch/sh64 -> arch/sh
arch/sparc, arch/sparc64 -> arch/sparc
To not break the user interface, commit 6752ed90da ("Kbuild: allow
arch/xxx to use a different source path") introduced SRCARCH to point
to the arch directory, still allowing to pass in the former ARCH=i386
or ARCH=x86_64.
Update the documents for preciseness, and add the explanation of SRCARCH.

The "size" tool has been solely used by s390 to enforce .bss section usage
restrictions in early startup code. Since commit 980d5f9ab3 ("s390/boot:
enable .bss section for compressed kernel") and commit 2e83e0eb85
("s390: clean .bss before running uncompressed kernel") these restrictions
have been lifted for the decompressor and uncompressed kernel and the
size tool is now unused.

During an investigation to fix up the execute bits of scripts in the
kernel repository, Andrew Morton and Kees Cook pointed out that the
execute bit should not matter, and that build scripts cannot rely on that.
Kees could not point to any documentation, though.
Masahiro Yamada explained the convention of setting execute bits to make
it easier for manual script invocation.
Provide some basic documentation how the build shall invoke scripts, such
that the execute bits do not matter, and acknowledge that execute bits are
useful nonetheless.
This serves as reference for further clean-up patches in the future.

Based on a vote at the LLVM BoF at Plumbers 2020, we decided to start
small, supporting just one formal upstream release of LLVM for now.
We can probably widen the support window of supported versions over
time. Also, note that LLVM's release process is different than GCC's.
GCC tends to have 1 major release per year while releasing minor updates
to the past 3 major versions. LLVM tends to support one major release
and one minor release every six months.

While reviewing a separate patch, I noticed that the formatting of the
commands, variables, and arguments was not in a monospaced font like the
rest of the Kbuild documentation (see kbuild/kconfig.rst for an
example). This is due to a lack of "::" before indented command blocks
and single backticks instead of double backticks for inline formatting.
Add those so that the document looks nicer in an HTML format, while not
ruining the look in plain text.
As a result of this, we can remove the escaped backslashes in the last
code block and move them to single backslashes.

To build host programs, you need to add the program names to 'hostprogs'
to use the necessary build rule, but it is not enough to build them
because there is no dependency.
There are two types of host programs: built as the prerequisite of
another (e.g. gen_crc32table in lib/Makefile), or always built when
Kbuild visits the Makefile (e.g. genksyms in scripts/genksyms/Makefile).
The latter is typical in Makefiles under scripts/, which contains host
programs globally used during the kernel build. To build them, you need
to add them to both 'hostprogs' and 'always-y'.
This commit adds hostprogs-always-y as a shorthand.
The same applies to user programs. net/bpfilter/Makefile builds
bpfilter_umh on demand, hence always-y is unneeded. In contrast,
programs under samples/ are added to both 'userprogs' and 'always-y'
so they are always built when Kbuild visits the Makefiles.
userprogs-always-y works as a shorthand.

CFLAGS_REMOVE_<file>.o filters out flags when compiling a particular
object, but there is no convenient way to do that for every object in
a directory.
Add ccflags-remove-y and asflags-remove-y to make it easily.
Use ccflags-remove-y to clean up some Makefiles.
The add/remove order works as follows:
[1] KBUILD_CFLAGS specifies compiler flags used globally
[2] ccflags-y adds compiler flags for all objects in the
current Makefile
[3] ccflags-remove-y removes compiler flags for all objects in the
current Makefile (New feature)
[4] CFLAGS_<file> adds compiler flags per file.
[5] CFLAGS_REMOVE_<file> removes compiler flags per file.
Having [3] before [4] allows us to remove flags from most (but not all)
objects in the current Makefile.
For example, kernel/trace/Makefile removes $(CC_FLAGS_FTRACE)
from all objects in the directory, then adds it back to
trace_selftest_dynamic.o and CFLAGS_trace_kprobe_selftest.o
The same applies to lib/livepatch/Makefile.
Please note ccflags-remove-y has no effect to the sub-directories.
In contrast, the previous notation got rid of compiler flags also from
all the sub-directories.
The following are not affected because they have no sub-directories:
arch/arm/boot/compressed/
arch/powerpc/xmon/
arch/sh/
kernel/trace/
However, lib/ has several sub-directories.
To keep the behavior, I added ccflags-remove-y to all Makefiles
in subdirectories of lib/, except the following:
lib/vdso/Makefile - Kbuild does not descend into this Makefile
lib/raid/test/Makefile - This is not used for the kernel build
I think commit 2464a609de ("ftrace: do not trace library functions")
excluded too much. In the next commit, I will remove ccflags-remove-y
from the sub-directories of lib/.

Some Makefiles already pass -fno-stack-protector unconditionally.
For example, arch/arm64/kernel/vdso/Makefile, arch/x86/xen/Makefile.
No problem report so far about hard-coding this option. So, we can
assume all supported compilers know -fno-stack-protector.

Get rid of cc-option from -fno-stack-protector.
Remove CONFIG_CC_HAS_STACKPROTECTOR_NONE, which is always 'y'.
Note:
arch/mips/vdso/Makefile adds -fno-stack-protector twice, first

As Documentation/kbuild/llvm.rst implies, building the kernel with a
full set of LLVM tools gets very verbose and unwieldy.
Provide a single switch LLVM=1 to use Clang and LLVM tools instead
of GCC and Binutils. You can pass it from the command line or as an
environment variable.
Please note LLVM=1 does not turn on the integrated assembler. You need
to pass LLVM_IAS=1 to use it. When the upstream kernel is ready for the
integrated assembler, I think we can make it default.
We discussed what we need, and we agreed to go with a simple boolean
flag that switches both target and host tools:

When multiple versions of LLVM are installed, I just thought supporting
LLVM_DIR=/path/to/my/llvm/bin/ might be useful.

- LLVM_SUFFIX
Some distributions (e.g. Debian) package specific versions of LLVM with
naming conventions that use the version as a suffix.

will allow a user to pass LLVM_SUFFIX=-11 to use clang-11 etc.,

The 'AS' variable is unused for building the kernel. Only the remaining
usage is to turn on the integrated assembler. A boolean flag is a better
fit for this purpose.
AS=clang was added for experts. So, I replaced it with LLVM_IAS=1,
breaking the backward compatibility.

In order to preserve backwards compatability with kmod tools, we have to
move the namespace field in Module.symvers last, as the depmod -e -E
option looks at the first three fields in Module.symvers to check symbol
versions (and it's expected they stay in the original order of crc,
symbol, module).
In addition, update an ancient comment above read_dump() in modpost that
suggested that the export type field in Module.symvers was optional. I
suspect that there were historical reasons behind that comment that are
no longer accurate. We have been unconditionally printing the export
type since 2.6.18 (commit bd5cbcedf4), which is over a decade ago now.
Fix up read_dump() to treat each field as non-optional. I suspect the
original read_dump() code treated the export field as optional in order
to support pre <= 2.6.18 Module.symvers (which did not have the export
type field). Note that although symbol namespaces are optional, the
field will not be omitted from Module.symvers if a symbol does not have
a namespace. In this case, the field will simply be empty and the next
delimiter or end of line will follow.

The 'imply' statement may create unmet direct dependency when the
implied symbol depends on m.

If you set FOO=y, BAZ is also promoted to y, which results in the

This does not meet the dependency 'BAZ depends on BAR'.
Unlike 'select', what is worse, Kconfig never shows the
'WARNING: unmet direct dependencies detected for ...' for this case.
Because 'imply' is considered to be weaker than 'depends on', Kconfig
should take the direct dependency into account.
For clarification, describe this case in kconfig-language.rst too.

The 'imply' keyword restricts a symbol to y or n, excluding m
when it is implied by y. This is the original behavior since
commit 237e3ad0f1 ("Kconfig: Introduce the "imply" keyword").
However, the author of this feature, Nicolas Pitre, stated that
the 'imply' keyword should not impose any restrictions.

This seems to be a copy-paste mistake of commit fcc8487d47 ("uapi:

The correct description would be "The convention is to list one

I just removed it instead of fixing it. If such information is needed,

In old days, the "host-progs" syntax was used for specifying host
programs. It was renamed to the current "hostprogs-y" in 2004.
It is typically useful in scripts/Makefile because it allows Kbuild to
selectively compile host programs based on the kernel configuration.
This commit renames like follows:
always -> always-y
hostprogs-y -> hostprogs
So, scripts/Makefile will look like this:
always-$(CONFIG_BUILD_BIN2C) += ...
always-$(CONFIG_KALLSYMS) += ...
...
hostprogs := $(always-y) $(always-m)
I think this makes more sense because a host program is always a host
program, irrespective of the kernel configuration. We want to specify
which ones to compile by CONFIG options, so always-y will be handier.
The "always", "hostprogs-y", "hostprogs-m" will be kept for backward
compatibility for a while.

The difference between "always" and "extra-y" is that the targets
listed in $(always) are always built, whereas the ones in $(extra-y)
are built only when KBUILD_BUILTIN is set.
So, "make modules" does not build the targets in $(extra-y).
vmlinux.lds is only needed for linking vmlinux. So, adding it to extra-y
is more correct. In fact, arch/x86/kernel/Makefile does this.
Fix the example code.

Commit bc081dd6e9 ("kbuild: generate modules.builtin") added
infrastructure to generate modules.builtin, the list of all
builtin modules.
Basically, it works like this:
- Kconfig generates include/config/tristate.conf, the list of
tristate CONFIG options with a value in a capital letter.
- scripts/Makefile.modbuiltin makes Kbuild descend into
directories to collect the information of builtin modules.
I am not a big fan of it because Kbuild ends up with traversing
the source tree twice.
I am not sure how perfectly it should work, but this approach cannot
avoid false positives; even if the relevant CONFIG option is tristate,
some Makefiles forces obj-m to obj-y.
Some examples are:

Nobody has complained about (or noticed) it, so it is probably fine to
have false positives in modules.builtin.
This commit simplifies the implementation. Let's exploit the fact
that every module has MODULE_LICENSE(). (modpost shows a warning if
MODULE_LICENSE is missing. If so, 0-day bot would already have blocked
such a module.)
I added MODULE_FILE to <linux/module.h>. When the code is being compiled
as builtin, it will be filled with the file path of the module, and
collected into modules.builtin.info. Then, scripts/link-vmlinux.sh
extracts the list of builtin modules out of it.
This new approach fixes the false-positives above, but adds another
type of false-positives; non-modular code may have MODULE_LICENSE()
by mistake. This is not a big deal, it is just the code is always
orphan. We can clean it up if we like. You can see cleanup examples by:

To sum up, this commits deletes lots of code, but still produces almost
equivalent results. Please note it does not increase the vmlinux size at
all. As you can see in include/asm-generic/vmlinux.lds.h, the .modinfo
section is discarded in the link stage.

Kbuild descends into a directory by either 'y' or 'm', but there is an
important difference.
Kbuild combines the built-in objects into built-in.a in each directory.
The built-in.a in the directory visited by obj-y is merged into the
built-in.a in the parent directory. This merge happens recursively
when Kbuild is ascending back towards the top directory, then built-in
objects are linked into vmlinux eventually. This works properly only
when the Makefile specifying obj-y is reachable by the chain of obj-y.
On the other hand, Kbuild does not take built-in.a from the directory
visited by obj-m. This it, all the objects in that directory are
supposed to be modular. If Kbuild descends into a directory by obj-m,
but the Makefile in the sub-directory specifies obj-y, those objects
are just left orphan.
The current statement "Kbuild only uses this information to decide that
it needs to visit the directory" is misleading. Clarify the difference.

There are both positive and negative options about this feature.
At first, I thought it was a good idea, but actually Linus stated a
negative opinion (https://lkml.org/lkml/2019/9/29/227). I admit it
is ugly and annoying.
The baseline I'd like to keep is the compile-test of uapi headers.
(Otherwise, kernel developers have no way to ensure the correctness
of the exported headers.)
I will maintain a small build rule in usr/include/Makefile.
Remove the other header test functionality.

Since commit 040fcc819a ("kbuild: improved modversioning support for
external modules"), the external module build reads Module.symvers in
the directory of the module itself, then dumps symbols back into it.
It accumulates stale symbols in the file when you build an external
module incrementally.
The idea behind it was, as the commit log explained, you can copy
Modules.symvers from one module to another when you need to pass symbol
information between two modules. However, the manual copy of the file
sounds questionable to me, and containing stale symbols is a downside.
Some time later, commit 0d96fb20b7 ("kbuild: Add new Kbuild variable
KBUILD_EXTRA_SYMBOLS") introduced a saner approach.
So, this commit removes the former one. Going forward, the external
module build dumps symbols into Module.symvers to be carried via
KBUILD_EXTRA_SYMBOLS, but never reads it automatically.
With the -I option removed, there is no one to set the external_module

In commit 43d8ce9d65 ("Provide in-kernel headers to make
extending kernel easier") a new mechanism was introduced, for kernels
>=5.2, which embeds the kernel headers in the kernel image or a module
and exposes them in procfs for use by userland tools.
The archive containing the header files has nondeterminism caused by
header files metadata. This patch normalizes the metadata and utilizes
KBUILD_BUILD_TIMESTAMP if provided and otherwise falls back to the
default behaviour.
In commit f7b101d330 ("kheaders: Move from proc to sysfs") it was
modified to use sysfs and the script for generation of the archive was
renamed to what is being patched.

Commit 40df759e2b ("kbuild: Fix build with binutils <= 2.19")
introduced ar-option and KBUILD_ARFLAGS to deal with old binutils.
According to Documentation/process/changes.rst, the current minimal
supported version of binutils is 2.21 so you can assume the 'D' option
is always supported. Not only GNU ar but also llvm-ar supports it.
With the 'D' option hard-coded, there is no more user of ar-option
or KBUILD_ARFLAGS.

Add support for symbols that are exported into namespaces. For that,
extract any namespace suffix from the symbol name. In addition, emit a
warning whenever a module refers to an exported symbol without
explicitly importing the namespace that it is defined in. This patch
consistently adds the namespace suffix to symbol names exported into
Module.symvers.
Example warning emitted by modpost in case of the above violation:
WARNING: module ums-usbat uses symbol usb_stor_resume from namespace
USB_STORAGE, but does not import it.

KBUILD_ENABLE_EXTRA_GCC_CHECKS started as a switch to add extra warning
options for GCC, but now it is a historical misnomer since we use it
also for Clang, DTC, and even kernel-doc.
Rename it to more sensible, shorter KBUILD_EXTRA_WARN.
For the backward compatibility, KBUILD_ENABLE_EXTRA_GCC_CHECKS is still
supported (but not advertised in the documentation).
I also fixed up 'make help', and updated the documentation.

These flags were added by commit 61754c1875 ("kbuild: Allow arch
Makefiles to override {cpp,ld,c}flags") to allow ARC to override -O2.
We did not see any other usage after all. Now that ARC switched to
CONFIG_CC_OPTIMIZE_FOR_PERFORMANCE_O3, there is no more user of
these variables.

The only the difference between clean-files and clean-dirs is the -r
option passed to the 'rm' command.
You can always pass -r, and then remove the clean-dirs syntax.

'make clean' descends into ./Kbuild, but does not clean anything
since everything is added to no-clean-files.
There is no need to descend to ./Kbuild in the first place.
We can drop the no-clean-files assignment.
With this, there is no more user of no-clean-files. I will keep it
for a while to see whether a new user will appear.

The assembler files in the kernel are *.S instead of *.s, so they must
be preprocessed. Since 'as' of GNU binutils is not able to preprocess,
we always use $(CC) as an assembler driver.
$(AS) is almost unused in Kbuild. As of v5.2, there is just one place
that directly invokes $(AS).

The contents of those directories were orphaned at the documentation
body.
While those directories could likely be moved to be inside some guide,
I'm opting to just adding their indexes to the main one, removing the
:orphan: and adding the SPDX header.
For the drivers, the rationale is that the documentation contains
a mix of Kernelspace, uAPI and admin-guide. So, better to keep them on
separate directories, as we've be doing with similar subsystem-specific
docs that were not split yet.
For the others, well... I'm too lazy to do the move. Also, it
seems to make sense to keep at least some of those at the main
dir (like kbuild, for example). In any case, a latter patch
could do the move.

In old days, Kbuild always used an absolute path for $(srctree).
Since commit 890676c65d ("kbuild: Use relative path when building in
the source tree"), $(srctree) is '.' when O= was not passed from the
command line.
Yet, using absolute paths is useful in some cases even without O=, for
instance, to create a cscope file with absolute path tags.
'O=.' was known to work as a workaround to force Kbuild to use absolute
paths even when you are building in the source tree.
Since commit 25b146c5b8 ("kbuild: allow Kbuild to start from any
directory"), Kbuild is too clever to be tricked. Even if you pass 'O=.'
Kbuild notices you are building in the source tree, then use '.' for
$(srctree).
So, 'make O=. cscope' is no help to create absolute path tags.
We cannot force one or the other according to commit e93bc1a0ca
("Revert "kbuild: specify absolute paths for cscope""). Both of
relative path and absolute path have pros and cons.
This commit adds a new flag KBUILD_ABS_SRCTREE to allow users to
choose the absolute path for $(srctree).
'make KBUILD_ABS_SRCTREE=1 cscope' will work as a replacement of
'make O=. cscope'.

In my view, most of headers can be self-contained. So, it would be
tedious to add every header to header-test-y explicitly. We usually
end up with "all headers with some exceptions".
There are two types in exceptions:
[1] headers that are never compiled as standalone units
For examples, include/linux/compiler-gcc.h is not intended for
direct inclusion. We should always exclude such ones.
[2] headers that are conditionally compiled as standalone units
Some headers can be compiled only for particular architectures.
For example, include/linux/arm-cci.h can be compiled only for
arm/arm64 because it requires <asm/arm-cci.h> to exist.
Clang can compile include/soc/nps/mtm.h only for arc because
it contains an arch-specific register in inline assembler.
So, you can write Makefile like this:
header-test- += linux/compiler-gcc.h
header-test-$(CONFIG_ARM) += linux/arm-cci.h
header-test-$(CONFIG_ARM64) += linux/arm-cci.h
header-test-$(CONFIG_ARC) += soc/nps/mtm.h
The new syntax header-test-pattern-y will be useful to specify
"the rest".
The typical usage is like this:
header-test-pattern-y += */*.h
This will add all the headers in sub-directories to the test coverage,
excluding $(header-test-). In this regards, header-test-pattern-y
behaves like a weaker variant of header-test-y.
Caveat:
The patterns in header-test-pattern-y are prefixed with $(srctree)/$(src)/
but not $(objtree)/$(obj)/. Stale generated headers are often left over
when you traverse the git history without cleaning. Wildcard patterns for
$(objtree) may match to stale headers, which could fail to compile.
One pitfall is $(srctree)/$(src)/ and $(objtree)/$(obj)/ point to the
same directory for in-tree building. So, header-test-pattern-y should
be used with care since it can potentially match to stale headers.
Caveat2:
You could use wildcard for header-test-. For example,
header-test- += asm-generic/%
... will exclude headers in asm-generic directory. Unfortunately, the
wildcard character is '%' instead of '*' here because this is evaluated
by $(filter-out ...) whereas header-test-pattern-y is evaluated by
$(wildcard ...). This is a kludge, but seems useful in some places...

header-test-y does not work with headers in sub-directories.
For example, you may want to write a Makefile, like this:
include/linux/Kbuild:
header-test-y += mtd/nand.h
This entry will create a wrapper include/linux/mtd/nand.hdrtest.c
with the following content:
#include "mtd/nand.h"
To make this work, we need to add $(srctree)/include/linux to the
header search path. It would be tedious to add ccflags-y.
Instead, we could change the *.hdrtest.c rule to wrap:
#include "nand.h"
This works for in-tree build since #include "..." searches in the
relative path from the header with this directive. For O=... build,
we need to add $(srctree)/include/linux/mtd to the header search path,
which will be even more tedious.
After all, I thought it would be handier to compile headers directly
without creating wrappers.
I added a new build rule to compile %.h into %.h.s
The target is %.h.s instead of %.h.o because it is slightly faster.
Also, as for GCC, an empty assembly is smaller than an empty object.
I wrote the build rule:
$(CC) $(c_flags) -S -o $@ -x c /dev/null -include $<
instead of:
$(CC) $(c_flags) -S -o $@ -x c $<
Both work fine with GCC, but the latter is bad for Clang.
This comes down to the difference in the -Wunused-function policy.
GCC does not warn about unused 'static inline' functions at all.
Clang does not warn about the ones in included headers, but does
about the ones in the source. So, we should handle headers as
headers, not as source files.
In fact, this has been hidden since commit abb2ea7dfd ("compiler,
clang: suppress warning for unused static inline functions"), but we
should not rely on that.

Sometimes it's useful to be able to explicitly ensure certain headers
remain self-contained, i.e. that they are compilable as standalone
units, by including and/or forward declaring everything they depend on.
Add special target header-test-y where individual Makefiles can add
headers to be tested if CONFIG_HEADER_TEST is enabled. This will
generate a dummy C file per header that gets built as part of extra-y.

headers_install_all does not make much sense any more because different
architectures export different set of uapi/linux/ headers. As you see
in include/uapi/linux/Kbuild, the installation of a.out.h, kvm.h, and
kvm_para.h is arch-dependent. So, headers_install_all repeats the
installation/removal of them.
If somebody really thinks it is useful to do headers_install for all
architectures, it would be possible by small shell-scripting, but
the top Makefile does not have to provide entry targets just for that
purpose.

The kbuild documentation clearly shows that the documents
there are written at different times: some use markdown,
some use their own peculiar logic to split sections.
Convert everything to ReST without affecting too much
the author's style and avoiding adding uneeded markups.
The conversion is actually:
- add blank lines and identation in order to identify paragraphs;
- fix tables markups;
- add some lists markups;
- mark literal blocks;
- adjust title markups.
At its new index.rst, let's add a :orphan: while this is not linked to
the main index.rst file, in order to avoid build warnings.

If you want to see if your linker supports a certain flag, then ask the
linker directly with ld-option (not the compiler with cc-ldoption).
Checking for linker flag support is an antipattern that complicates the
usage of various linkers other than bfd via -fuse-ld={bfd|gold|lld}.

Problem:
When a kernel module is compiled as a separate module, some important
information about the kernel module is available via .modinfo section of
the module. In contrast, when the kernel module is compiled into the
kernel, that information is not available.
Information about built-in modules is necessary in the following cases:
1. When it is necessary to find out what additional parameters can be
passed to the kernel at boot time.
2. When you need to know which module names and their aliases are in
the kernel. This is very useful for creating an initrd image.
Proposal:
The proposed patch does not remove .modinfo section with module
information from the vmlinux at the build time and saves it into a
separate file after kernel linking. So, the kernel does not increase in
size and no additional information remains in it. Information is stored
in the same format as in the separate modules (null-terminated string
array). Because the .modinfo section is already exported with a separate
modules, we are not creating a new API.
It can be easily read in the userspace:

Currently, every arch/*/include/uapi/asm/Kbuild explicitly includes
the common Kbuild.asm file. Factor out the duplicated include directives
to scripts/Makefile.asm-generic so that no architecture would opt out
of the mandatory-y mechanism.
um is not forced to include mandatory-y since it is a very exceptional
case which does not support UAPI.

There is no more direct user of this macro; it is only used by
cc-ifversion.
Calling this macro is not efficient since it invokes the compiler to
get the compiler version. CONFIG_GCC_VERSION is already calculated in
the Kconfig stage, so Makefile can reuse it.
Here is a note about the slight difference between cc-version and
CONFIG_GCC_VERSION:
When using Clang, cc-version is evaluated to '0402' because Clang
defines __GNUC__ and __GNUC__MINOR__, and looks like GCC 4.2 in the
version point of view. On the other hand, CONFIG_GCC_VERSION=0
when $(CC) is clang.
There are currently two users of cc-ifversion:
arch/mips/loongson64/Platform
arch/powerpc/Makefile
They are not affected by this change.
The format of cc-version is <major><minor>, while CONFIG_GCC_VERSION
<major><minor><patch>. I adjusted cc-ifversion for the difference of
the number of digits.

Commit 06300b21f4 ("kbuild: support building individual files for
external modules") introduced the '/' target. It works only for
external modules to build all .o files, but skip the modpost stage.
However, 'make /' looks a bit weird to me. 'make ./' is more sensible
if you want to build all objects under the current directory, and it
works as expected.
Let's change '/' into a phony target that is an alias of './', but
I may feel like deprecating it in the future.

The top Makefile does not need to export KBUILD_VMLINUX_INIT and
KBUILD_VMLINUX_MAIN separately.
Put every built-in.a into KBUILD_VMLINUX_OBJS. The order of
$(head-y), $(init-y), $(core-y), ... is still retained.

The symbol table in the final archive is unneeded; the linker does not
require the symbol table after the --whole-archive option. Every object
file in the archive is included in the link anyway.
Pass thin archives from subdirectories directly to the linker, and
remove the final archiving step.
Fix up the document and comments as well.

Some time ago, Sam pointed out a certain degree of overwrap between
generic-y and mandatory-y. (https://lkml.org/lkml/2017/7/10/121)
I tweaked the meaning of mandatory-y a little bit; now it defines the
minimum set of ASM headers that all architectures must have.
If arch does not have specific implementation of a mandatory header,
Kbuild will let it fallback to the asm-generic one by automatically
generating a wrapper. This will allow to drop lots of redundant
generic-y defines.
Previously, "mandatory" was used in the context of UAPI, but I guess
this can be extended to kernel space ASM headers.

SUBDIRS has been kept as a backward compatibility since
commit ("[PATCH] kbuild: external module support") in 2002.
We do not need multiple ways to do the same thing, so I will remove
SUBDIRS after the Linux 5.3 release. I cleaned up in-tree code, and
updated the document so that nobody would try to use it.
Meanwhile, display the following warning if SUBDIRS is used.

This is a respin with a wider audience (all that get_maintainer returned)
and I know this spams a *lot* of people. Not sure what would be the correct
way, so my apologies for ruining your inbox.
The 00-INDEX files are supposed to give a summary of all files present
in a directory, but these files are horribly out of date and their
usefulness is brought into question. Often a simple "ls" would reveal
the same information as the filenames are generally quite descriptive as
a short introduction to what the file covers (it should not surprise
anyone what Documentation/sched/sched-design-CFS.txt covers)
A few years back it was mentioned that these files were no longer really
needed, and they have since then grown further out of date, so perhaps
it is time to just throw them out.
A short status yields the following _outdated_ 00-INDEX files, first
counter is files listed in 00-INDEX but missing in the directory, last
is files present but not listed in 00-INDEX.

are missing 00-INDEX alltogether (and another 120 with a single file and no

I don't really have an opinion to whether or not we /should/ have 00-INDEX,
but the above 00-INDEX should either be removed or be kept up to date. If
we should keep the files, I can try to keep them updated, but I rather not
if we just want to delete them anyway.

Currently, Kconfig does not complain about the recursive dependency
where 'imply' keywords are involved.

In the code above, Kconfig cannot calculate the symbol values correctly
due to the circular dependency. For example, allyesconfig followed by
syncconfig results in an odd behavior because CONFIG_B becomes visible
in syncconfig.

To detect this correctly, sym_check_expr_deps() should recurse to
not only sym->rev_dep.expr but also sym->implied.expr .
At this moment, sym_check_print_recursive() cannot distinguish
'select' and 'imply' since it does not know the precise context
where the recursive dependency has been hit. This will be solved
by the next commit.
In fact, even the document and the unit-test are confused. Using
'imply' does not solve recursive dependency since 'imply' addresses
the unmet direct dependency, which 'select' could cause.

Users of if_changed could easily feel invited to use it to divide a
recipe into parts like:
a: prereq FORCE
$(call if_changed,do_a)
$(call if_changed,do_b)
But this is problematic, because if_changed should not be used more
than once per target: in the above example, if_changed stores the
command-line of the given command in .a.cmd and when a is up-to-date
with respect to prereq, the file .a.cmd contains the command-line for
the last command executed, i.e. do_b.
When the recipe is then executed again, without any change of
prerequisites, the command-line check for do_a will fail, do_a will be
executed and stored in .a.cmd. The next check, however, will still see
the old content (the file isn't re-read) and if_changed will skip
do_b, because the command-line test will not recognize a change. On
the next execution of the recipe the roles will flip: do_a is OK but
do_b not and it will be executed. And so on...

In preparation for enabling command line CFLAGS, re-name HOSTCFLAGS to
KBUILD_HOSTCFLAGS as the internal use only flags. This should not have
any visible effects.
