It is a revised version of the fchmodat() system call, adding a missing flag argument. Support for both AT_SYMLINK_NOFOLLOW and AT_EMPTY_PATH are included. Adding this system call revision has been a longstanding request but so far has always fallen through the cracks. While the kernel implementation of fchmodat() does not have a flag argument the libc provided POSIX-compliant fchmodat(3) version does. Both glibc and musl have to implement a workaround in order to support AT_SYMLINK_NOFOLLOW (see [1] and [2]). The workaround is brittle because it relies not just on O_PATH and O_NOFOLLOW semantics and procfs magic links but also on our rather inconsistent symlink semantics. This gives userspace a proper fchmodat2() system call that libcs can use to properly implement fchmodat(3) and allows them to get rid of their hacks. In this case it will immediately benefit them as the current workaround is already defunct because of aformentioned inconsistencies. In addition to AT_SYMLINK_NOFOLLOW, give userspace the ability to use AT_EMPTY_PATH with fchmodat2(). This is already possible with fchownat() so there's no reason to not also support it for fchmodat2(). The implementation is simple and comes with selftests. Implementation of the system call and wiring up the system call are done as separate patches even though they could arguably be one patch. But in case there are merge conflicts from other system call additions it can be beneficial to have separate patches" Link: https://sourceware.org/git/?p=glibc.git;a=blob;f=sysdeps/unix/sysv/linux/fchmodat.c;h=17eca54051ee28ba1ec3f9aed170a62630959143;hb=a492b1e5ef7ab50c6fdd4e4e9879ea5569ab0a6c#l35 [1] Link: https://git.musl-libc.org/cgit/musl/tree/src/stat/fchmodat.c?id=718f363bc2067b6487900eddc9180c84e7739f80#n28 [2] * tag 'v6.6-vfs.fchmodat2' of git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/vfs/vfs: selftests: fchmodat2: remove duplicate unneeded defines fchmodat2: add support for AT_EMPTY_PATH selftests: Add fchmodat2 selftest arch: Register fchmodat2, usually as syscall 452 fs: Add fchmodat2() Non-functional cleanup of a "__user * filename" |

kill do_each_thread()
Eric has pointed out that we still have 3 users of do_each_thread(). Change them to use for_each_process_thread() and kill this helper. There is a subtle change, after do_each_thread/while_each_thread g == t == &init_task, while after for_each_process_thread() they both point to nowhere, but this doesn't matter. > Why is for_each_process_thread() better than do_each_thread()? Say, for_each_process_thread() is rcu safe, do_each_thread() is not. And certainly for_each_process_thread(p, t) { do_something(p, t); } looks better than do_each_thread(p, t) { do_something(p, t); } while_each_thread(p, t); And again, there are only 3 users of this awkward helper left. It should have been killed years ago and in fact I thought it had already been killed. It uses while_each_thread() which needs some changes. ia64: mmap: Consider pgoff when searching for free mapping
IA64 is the only architecture which does not consider the pgoff value when searching for a possible free memory region with vm_unmapped_area(). Adding this seems to have no negative side effect on IA64, so add it now to make IA64 consistent with all other architectures. Updates for the x86 boot process:
- Initialize FPU late. Right now FPU is initialized very early during boot. There is no real requirement to do so. The only requirement is to have it done before alternatives are patched. That's done in check_bugs() which does way more than what the function name suggests. So first rename check_bugs() to arch_cpu_finalize_init() which makes it clear what this is about. Move the invocation of arch_cpu_finalize_init() earlier in start_kernel() as it has to be done before fork_init() which needs to know the FPU register buffer size. sysctl-6.4-rc1
This pull request goes with only a few sysctl moves from the kernel/sysctl.c file, the rest of the work has been put towards deprecating two API calls which incur recursion and prevent us from simplifying the registration process / saving memory per move. Most of the changes have been soaking on linux-next since v6.3-rc3. I've slowed down the kernel/sysctl.c moves due to Matthew Wilcox's feedback that we should see if we could *save* memory with these moves instead of incurring more memory. We currently incur more memory since when we move a syctl from kernel/sysclt.c out to its own file we end up having to add a new empty sysctl used to register it. To achieve saving memory we want to allow syctls to be passed without requiring the end element being empty, and just have our registration process rely on ARRAY_SIZE(). Without this, supporting both styles of sysctls would make the sysctl registration pretty brittle, hard to read and maintain as can be seen from Meng Tang's efforts to do just this [0]. Fortunately, in order to use ARRAY_SIZE() for all sysctl registrations also implies doing the work to deprecate two API calls which use recursion in order to support sysctl declarations with subdirectories. And so during this development cycle quite a bit of effort went into this deprecation effort. I've annotated the following two APIs are deprecated and in few kernel releases we should be good to remove them: * register_sysctl_table() * register_sysctl_paths() During this merge window we should be able to deprecate and unexport register_sysctl_paths(), we can probably do that towards the end of this merge window. Deprecating register_sysctl_table() will take a bit more time but this pull request goes with a few example of how to do this. As it turns out each of the conversions to move away from either of these two API calls *also* saves memory. And so long term, all these changes *will* prove to have saved a bit of memory on boot. The way I see it then is if remove a user of one deprecated call, it gives us enough savings to move one kernel/sysctl.c out from the generic arrays as we end up with about the same amount of bytes. Since deprecating register_sysctl_table() and register_sysctl_paths() does not require maintainer coordination except the final unexport you'll see quite a bit of these changes from other pull requests, I've just kept the stragglers after rc3. Most of these changes have been soaking on linux-next since around rc3. modules-6.4-rc1
The summary of the changes for this pull requests is: * Song Liu's new struct module_memory replacement * Nick Alcock's MODULE_LICENSE() removal for non-modules * My cleanups and enhancements to reduce the areas where we vmalloc module memory for duplicates, and the respective debug code which proves the remaining vmalloc pressure comes from userspace. Most of the changes have been in linux-next for quite some time except the minor fixes I made to check if a module was already loaded prior to allocating the final module memory with vmalloc and the respective debug code it introduces to help clarify the issue. Although the functional change is small it is rather safe as it can only *help* reduce vmalloc space for duplicates and is confirmed to fix a bootup issue with over 400 CPUs with KASAN enabled. I don't expect stable kernels to pick up that fix as the cleanups would have also had to have been picked up. Folks on larger CPU systems with modules will want to just upgrade if vmalloc space has been an issue on bootup. Given the size of this request, here's some more elaborate details on this pull request. The functional change change in this pull request is the very first patch from Song Liu which replaces the struct module_layout with a new struct module memory. The old data structure tried to put together all types of supported module memory types in one data structure, the new one abstracts the differences in memory types in a module to allow each one to provide their own set of details. This paves the way in the future so we can deal with them in a cleaner way. If you look at changes they also provide a nice cleanup of how we handle these different memory areas in a module. This change has been in linux-next since before the merge window opened for v6.3 so to provide more than a full kernel cycle of testing. It's a good thing as quite a bit of fixes have been found for it. Jason Baron then made dynamic debug a first class citizen module user by using module notifier callbacks to allocate / remove module specific dynamic debug information. Nick Alcock has done quite a bit of work cross-tree to remove module license tags from things which cannot possibly be module at my request so to: a) help him with his longer term tooling goals which require a deterministic evaluation if a piece a symbol code could ever be part of a module or not. But quite recently it is has been made clear that tooling is not the only one that would benefit. Disambiguating symbols also helps efforts such as live patching, kprobes and BPF, but for other reasons and R&D on this area is active with no clear solution in sight. b) help us inch closer to the now generally accepted long term goal of automating all the MODULE_LICENSE() tags from SPDX license tags In so far as a) is concerned, although module license tags are a no-op for non-modules, tools which would want create a mapping of possible modules can only rely on the module license tag after the commit |

module: replace module_layout with module_memory
module_layout manages different types of memory (text, data, rodata, etc.) in one allocation, which is problematic for some reasons: 1. It is hard to enable CONFIG_STRICT_MODULE_RWX. 2. It is hard to use huge pages in modules (and not break strict rwx). 3. Many archs uses module_layout for arch-specific data, but it is not obvious how these data are used (are they RO, RX, or RW?) Improve the scenario by replacing 2 (or 3) module_layout per module with up to 7 module_memory per module: MOD_TEXT, MOD_DATA, MOD_RODATA, MOD_RO_AFTER_INIT, MOD_INIT_TEXT, MOD_INIT_DATA, MOD_INIT_RODATA, and allocating them separately. This adds slightly more entries to mod_tree (from up to 3 entries per module, to up to 7 entries per module). However, this at most adds a small constant overhead to __module_address(), which is expected to be fast. Various archs use module_layout for different data. These data are put into different module_memory based on their location in module_layout. IOW, data that used to go with text is allocated with MOD_MEM_TYPE_TEXT; data that used to go with data is allocated with MOD_MEM_TYPE_DATA, etc. module_memory simplifies quite some of the module code. For example, ARCH_WANTS_MODULES_DATA_IN_VMALLOC is a lot cleaner, as it just uses a different allocator for the data. kernel/module/strict_rwx.c is also much cleaner with module_memory. sched/idle: Mark arch_cpu_idle_dead() __noreturn
Before commit 076cbf5d2163 ("x86/xen: don't let xen_pv_play_dead() return"), in Xen, when a previously offlined CPU was brought back online, it unexpectedly resumed execution where it left off in the middle of the idle loop. There were some hacks to make that work, but the behavior was surprising as do_idle() doesn't expect an offlined CPU to return from the dead (in arch_cpu_idle_dead()). Now that Xen has been fixed, and the arch-specific implementations of arch_cpu_idle_dead() also don't return, give it a __noreturn attribute. This will cause the compiler to complain if an arch-specific implementation might return. It also improves code generation for both caller and callee. Also fixes the following warning: vmlinux.o: warning: objtool: do_idle+0x25f: unreachable instruction Reported-by: Paul E. McKenney <paulmck@kernel.org> Tested-by: Paul E. A healthy mix of EFI contributions this time:
- Performance tweaks for efifb earlycon by Andy - Preparatory refactoring and cleanup work in the efivar layer by Johan, which is needed to accommodate the Snapdragon arm64 laptops that expose their EFI variable store via a TEE secure world API. - Enhancements to the EFI memory map handling so that Xen dom0 can safely access EFI configuration tables (Demi Marie) - Wire up the newly introduced IBT/BTI flag in the EFI memory attributes table, so that firmware that is generated with ENDBR/BTI landing pads will be mapped with enforcement enabled. - Clean up how we check and print the EFI revision exposed by the firmware. - Incorporate EFI memory attributes protocol definition contributed by Evgeniy and wire it up in the EFI zboot code. This ensures that these images can execute under new and stricter rules regarding the default memory permissions for EFI page allocations. efi: Drop minimum EFI version check at boot
We currently pass a minimum major version to the generic EFI helper that checks the system table magic and version, and refuse to boot if the value is lower. The motivation for this check is unknown, and even the code that uses major version 2 as the minimum (ARM, arm64 and RISC-V) should make it past this check without problems, and boot to a point where we have access to a console or some other means to inform the user that the firmware's major revision number made us unhappy. (Revision 2.0 of the UEFI specification was released in January 2006, whereas ARM, arm64 and RISC-V support where added in 2009, 2013 and 2017, respectively, so checking for major version 2 or higher is completely arbitrary) So just drop the check. arch/idle: Change arch_cpu_idle() behavior: always exit with IRQs disabled
Current arch_cpu_idle() is called with IRQs disabled, but will return with IRQs enabled. However, the very first thing the generic code does after calling arch_cpu_idle() is raw_local_irq_disable(). This means that architectures that can idle with IRQs disabled end up doing a pointless 'enable-disable' dance. Therefore, push this IRQ disabling into the idle function, meaning that those architectures can avoid the pointless IRQ state flipping. The implementation of strscpy() is more robust and safer. That's now the recommended way to copy NUL terminated strings. kbuild: use obj-y instead extra-y for objects placed at the head
The objects placed at the head of vmlinux need special treatments: - arch/$(SRCARCH)/Makefile adds them to head-y in order to place them before other archives in the linker command line. - arch/$(SRCARCH)/kernel/Makefile adds them to extra-y instead of obj-y to avoid them going into built-in.a. This commit gets rid of the latter. Create vmlinux.a to collect all the objects that are unconditionally linked to vmlinux. The objects listed in head-y are moved to the head of vmlinux.a by using 'ar m'. With this, arch/$(SRCARCH)/kernel/Makefile can consistently use obj-y for builtin objects. There is no *.o that is directly linked to vmlinux. Drop unneeded code in scripts/clang-tools/gen_compile_commands.py. $(AR) mPi needs 'T' to workaround the llvm-ar bug. The fix was suggested by Nathan Chancellor [1]. ia64: fix clock_getres(CLOCK_MONOTONIC) to report ITC frequency
clock_gettime(CLOCK_MONOTONIC, &tp) is very precise on ia64 as it uses ITC (similar to rdtsc on x86). It's not quite a hrtimer as it is a few times slower than 1ns. Usually 2-3ns. clock_getres(CLOCK_MONOTONIC, &res) never reflected that fact and reported 0.04s precision (1/HZ value). In https://bugs.gentoo.org/596382 gstreamer's test suite failed loudly when it noticed precision discrepancy. Before the change: clock_getres(CLOCK_MONOTONIC, &res) reported 250Hz precision. After the change: clock_getres(CLOCK_MONOTONIC, &res) reports ITC (400Mhz) precision. The patch is based on matoro's fix. I added a bit of explanation why we need to special-case arch-specific clock_getres(). profile: setup_profiling_timer() is moslty not implemented
The setup_profiling_timer() is mostly un-implemented by many architectures. In many places it isn't guarded by CONFIG_PROFILE which is needed for it to be used. Make it a weak symbol in kernel/profile.c and remove the 'return -EINVAL' implementations from the kenrel. There are a couple of architectures which do return 0 from the setup_profiling_timer() function but they don't seem to do anything else with it. To keep the /proc compatibility for now, leave these for a future update or removal. On ARM, this fixes the following sparse warning: arch/arm/kernel/smp.c:793:5: warning: symbol 'setup_profiling_timer' was not declared. Should it be static? genirq: Add and use an irq_data_update_affinity helper
Some architectures and irqchip drivers modify the cpumask returned by irq_data_get_affinity_mask, usually by copying in to it. This is problematic for uniprocessor configurations, where the affinity mask should be constant, as it is known at compile time. Add and use a setter for the affinity mask, following the pattern of irq_data_update_effective_affinity. This allows the getter function to return a const cpumask pointer.
