5d1d46f9d5 KVM: selftests: Add a selftest for guest prints and formatted asserts
Add a test to exercise the various features in KVM selftest's local
snprintf() and compare them to LIBC's snprintf() to ensure they behave
the same.

This is not an exhaustive test. KVM's local snprintf() does not
implement all the features LIBC does, e.g. KVM's local snprintf() does
not support floats or doubles, so testing for those features were
excluded.

Testing was added for the features that are expected to work to
support a minimal version of printf() in the guest.

b35f4c73d3 KVM: selftests: Add arch ucall.h and inline simple arch hooks
Add an architecture specific ucall.h and inline the simple arch hooks,
e.g. the init hook for everything except ARM, and the actual "do ucall"

isn't due to carrying a workaround).

Having a per-arch ucall header will allow adding a #define for the
expected KVM exit reason for a ucall that is colocated (for everything
except x86) with the ucall itself.

289c2b4db8 KVM: selftests: Add formatted guest assert support in ucall framework
Add printf-based GUEST_ASSERT macros and accompanying host-side support to
provide an assert-specific versions of GUEST_PRINTF(). To make it easier
to parse assert messages, for humans and bots alike, preserve/use the same
layout as host asserts, e.g. in the example below, the reported expression,
file, line number, and message are from the guest assertion, not the host
reporting of the assertion.

The call stack still captures the host reporting, but capturing the guest
stack is a less pressing concern, i.e. can be done in the future, and an
optimal solution would capture *both* the host and guest stacks, i.e.
capturing the host stack isn't an outright bug.

Don't bother sharing code between ucall_assert() and ucall_fmt(), as
forwarding the variable arguments would either require using macros or
building a va_list, i.e. would make the code less readable and/or require
just as much copy+paste code anyways.

Gate the new macros with a flag so that tests can more or less be switched
over one-by-one. The slow conversion won't be perfect, e.g. library code
won't pick up the flag, but the only asserts in library code are of the
vanilla GUEST_ASSERT() variety, i.e. don't print out variables.

Add a temporary alias to GUEST_ASSERT_1() to fudge around ARM's
arch_timer.h header using GUEST_ASSERT_1(), thus thwarting any attempt to
convert tests one-by-one.

57e5c1fef5 KVM: selftests: Add string formatting options to ucall
Add more flexibility to guest debugging and testing by adding
GUEST_PRINTF() and GUEST_ASSERT_FMT() to the ucall framework.

Add a sized buffer to the ucall structure to hold the formatted string,
i.e. to allow the guest to easily resolve the string, and thus avoid the
ugly pattern of the host side having to make assumptions about the desired
format, as well as having to pass around a large number of parameters.

The buffer size was chosen to accommodate most use cases, and based on
similar usage. E.g. printf() uses the same size buffer in
arch/x86/boot/printf.c. And 1KiB ought to be enough for anybody.

215a681710 KVM: selftests: Add additional pages to the guest to accommodate ucall
Add additional pages to the guest to account for the number of pages
the ucall headers need. The only reason things worked before is the
ucall headers are fairly small. If they were ever to increase in
size the guest could run out of memory.

This is done in preparation for adding string formatting options to
the guest through the ucall framework which increases the size of
the ucall headers.

e511938249 KVM: selftests: Add guest_snprintf() to KVM selftests
Add a local version of guest_snprintf() for use in the guest.

Having a local copy allows the guest access to string formatting
options without dependencies on LIBC. LIBC is problematic because
it heavily relies on both AVX-512 instructions and a TLS, neither of
which are guaranteed to be set up in the guest.

The file guest_sprintf.c was lifted from arch/x86/boot/printf.c and
adapted to work in the guest, including the addition of buffer length.
I.e. s/sprintf/snprintf/

The functions where prefixed with "guest_" to allow guests to
explicitly call them.

A string formatted by this function is expected to succeed or die. If
something goes wrong during the formatting process a GUEST_ASSERT()
will be thrown.

6783ca4105 KVM: selftests: Add a shameful hack to preserve/clobber GPRs across ucall
Preserve or clobber all GPRs (except RIP and RSP, as they're saved and
restored via the VMCS) when performing a ucall on x86 to fudge around a
horrific long-standing bug in selftests' nested VMX support where L2's
GPRs are not preserved across a nested VM-Exit. I.e. if a test triggers a
nested VM-Exit to L1 in response to a ucall, e.g. GUEST_SYNC(), then L2's
GPR state can be corrupted.

The issues manifests as an unexpected #GP in clear_bit() when running the
hyperv_evmcs test due to RBX being used to track the ucall object, and RBX
being clobbered by the nested VM-Exit. The problematic hyperv_evmcs
testcase is where L0 (test's host userspace) injects an NMI in response to
GUEST_SYNC(8) from L2, but the bug could "randomly" manifest in any test
that induces a nested VM-Exit from L0. The bug hasn't caused failures in
the past due to sheer dumb luck.

The obvious fix is to rework the nVMX helpers to save/restore L2 GPRs
across VM-Exit and VM-Enter, but that is a much bigger task and carries
its own risks, e.g. nSVM does save/restore GPRs, but not in a thread-safe
manner, and there is a _lot_ of cleanup that can be done to unify code
for doing VM-Enter on nVMX, nSVM, and eVMCS.

5a7591176c KVM: selftests: Expand x86's sregs test to cover illegal CR0 values
Add coverage to x86's set_sregs_test to verify KVM rejects vendor-agnostic
illegal CR0 values, i.e. CR0 values whose legality doesn't depend on the
current VMX mode. KVM historically has neglected to reject bad CR0s from
userspace, i.e. would happily accept a completely bogus CR0 via
KVM_SET_SREGS{2}.

Punt VMX specific subtests to future work, as they would require quite a
bit more effort, and KVM gets coverage for CR0 checks in general through
other means, e.g. KVM-Unit-Tests.

211c0189ea KVM: selftests: Verify stats fd is usable after VM fd has been closed
Verify that VM and vCPU binary stats files are usable even after userspace
has put its last direct reference to the VM. This is a regression test
for a UAF bug where KVM didn't gift the stats files a reference to the VM.

65f1f57f35 KVM: selftests: Verify stats fd can be dup()'d and read
Expand the binary stats test to verify that a stats fd can be dup()'d
and read, to (very) roughly simulate userspace passing around the file.
Adding the dup() test is primarily an intermediate step towards verifying
that userspace can read VM/vCPU stats before _and_ after userspace closes
its copy of the VM fd; the dup() test itself is only mildly interesting.

Verify that KVM doesn't artificially limit KVM_GET_STATS_FD to a single

make it easier to test that KVM correct manages VM refcounts for stats

Move the stats fd cleanup code into stats_test() and drop the
superfluous vm_stats_test() and vcpu_stats_test() helpers in order to
decouple creation of the stats file from consuming/testing the file
(deduping code is a bonus). This will make it easier to test various

that userspace can have multiple stats files for a singleVM/vCPU, etc.

e325ba2271 KVM: s390: selftests: add selftest for CMMA migration
Add a selftest for CMMA migration on s390.

The tests cover:
- interaction of dirty tracking and migration mode, see my recent patch
"KVM: s390: disable migration mode when dirty tracking is disabled" [1],
- several invalid calls of KVM_S390_GET_CMMA_BITS, for example: invalid
flags, CMMA support off, with/without peeking
- ensure KVM_S390_GET_CMMA_BITS initally reports all pages as dirty,
- ensure KVM_S390_GET_CMMA_BITS properly skips over holes in memslots, but
  also non-dirty pages

Note that without the patch at [1] and the small fix in this series, the
selftests will fail.

dfa78a20cc KVM: selftests: Add dirty logging page splitting test
Add a test for page splitting during dirty logging and for hugepage
recovery after dirty logging.

Page splitting represents non-trivial behavior, which is complicated
by MANUAL_PROTECT mode, which causes pages to be split on the first
clear, instead of when dirty logging is enabled.

Add a test which makes assertions about page counts to help define the
expected behavior of page splitting and to provide needed coverage of the
behavior. This also helps ensure that a failure in eager page splitting
is not covered up by splitting in the vCPU path.

Tested by running the test on an Intel Haswell machine w/wo

07b4b2f404 KVM: selftests: touch all pages of args on each memstress iteration
Access the same memory addresses on each iteration of the memstress
guest code. This ensures that the state of KVM's page tables
is the same after every iteration, including the pages that host the
guest page tables for args and vcpu_args.

This difference is visible when running the proposed
dirty_log_page_splitting_test[*] on AMD, or on Intel with pml=0 and
eptad=0. The tests fail due to different semantics of dirty bits for
page-table pages on AMD (and eptad=0) and Intel. Both AMD and Intel with
eptad=0 treat page-table accesses as writes, therefore more pages are
dropped before the repopulation phase when dirty logging is disabled.

The "missing" page had been included in the population phase because it
hosts the page tables for vcpu_args, but repopulation does not need it."

Use a single struct to track all PMC event counts in the PMU filter test,
and copy the full struct to/from the guest when running and measuring each

the guest MSRs to the host structs.

Zero the struct before running the guest workload to ensure that the test
doesn't get a false pass due to consuming data from a previous run.

48ad4222c4 KVM: selftests: Enable checking on xcomp_bv in amx_test
After tilerelease instruction, AMX tiles are in INIT state. According to
Intel SDM vol 1. 13.10: "If RFBM[i] = 1, XSTATE_BV[i] is set to the
value of XINUSE[i].", XSTATE_BV[18] should be cleared after xsavec.

On the other hand, according to Intel SDM vol 1. 13.4.3: "If XCOMP_BV[i] =
1, state component i is located at a byte offset locationI from the base
address of the XSAVE area". Since at the time of xsavec, XCR0[18] is set
indicating AMX tile data component is still enabled, xcomp_bv[18] should be
set.

Complete the checks by adding the assert to xcomp_bv[18] after xsavec.

After the execution of __tilerelease(), AMX component will be in INIT

5de4a3765b KVM: selftests: Add a fully functional "struct xstate" for x86
Add a working xstate data structure for the usage of AMX and potential
future usage on other xstate components. AMX selftest requires checking
both the xstate_bv and xcomp_bv. Existing code relies on pointer
arithmetics to fetch xstate_bv and does not support xcomp_bv.

So, add a working xstate data structure into processor.h for x86.

8264e85560 KVM: selftests: Adjust VM's initial stack address to align with SysV ABI spec
Align the guest stack to match calling sequence requirements in
section "The Stack Frame" of the System V ABI AMD64 Architecture
Processor Supplement, which requires the value (%rsp + 8), NOT %rsp,
to be a multiple of 16 when control is transferred to the function
entry point. I.e. in a normal function call, %rsp needs to be 16-byte
aligned _before_ CALL, not after.

This fixes unexpected #GPs in guest code when the compiler uses SSE
instructions, e.g. to initialize memory, as many SSE instructions
require memory operands (including those on the stack) to be
16-byte-aligned.

4090871d77 KVM/arm64 updates for 6.3
- Provide a virtual cache topology to the guest to avoid
inconsistencies with migration on heterogenous systems. Non secure
software has no practical need to traverse the caches by set/way in
    the first place.

  - Add support for taking stage-2 access faults in parallel. This was an
accidental omission in the original parallel faults implementation,
but should provide a marginal improvement to machines w/o FEAT_HAFDBS
(such as hardware from the fruit company).

  - A preamble to adding support for nested virtualization to KVM,
including vEL2 register state, rudimentary nested exception handling
and masking unsupported features for nested guests.

  - Fixes to the PSCI relay that avoid an unexpected host SVE trap when
resuming a CPU when running pKVM.

  - VGIC maintenance interrupt support for the AIC

  - Improvements to the arch timer emulation, primarily aimed at reducing
the trap overhead of running nested.

  - Add CONFIG_USERFAULTFD to the KVM selftests config fragment in the
    interest of CI systems.

  - Avoid VM-wide stop-the-world operations when a vCPU accesses its own
    redistributor.

  - Serialize when toggling CPACR_EL1.SMEN to avoid unexpected exceptions
    in the host.

  - Aesthetic and comment/kerneldoc fixes

  - Drop the vestiges of the old Columbia mailing list and add myself as
    co-maintainer

This also drags in a couple of branches to avoid conflicts:

  - The shared 'kvm-hw-enable-refactor' branch that reworks
initialization, as it conflicted with the virtual cache topology
    changes.

  - arm64's 'for-next/sme2' branch, as the PSCI relay changes, as both
    touched the EL2 initialization code.

6c77ae716d KVM: selftests: Clean up misnomers in xen_shinfo_test
As discussed[*], relabel the poorly named structs to align with the
current KVM nomenclature.

Old names are a leftover from before commit 52491a38b2 ("KVM:
Initialize gfn_to_pfn_cache locks in dedicated helper"), which i.a.
introduced kvm_gpc_init() and renamed kvm_gfn_to_pfn_cache_init()/
_destroy() to kvm_gpc_activate()/_deactivate(). Partly in an effort
to avoid implying that the cache really is destroyed/freed.

While at it, get rid of #define GPA_INVALID, which being used as a GFN,
is not only misnamed, but also unnecessarily reinvents a UAPI constant.

No functional change intended.

Only Stage1 Page table walks (S1PTW) writing a PTE on an unmapped page

Fix this by relaxing the read vs. write checks in all userfaultfd

userfaultfd) behavior, and more on architectural behavior. Also note
that after commit 406504c7b0 ("KVM: arm64: Fix S1PTW handling on RO

Use the host CPU's native hypercall instruction, i.e. VMCALL vs. VMMCALL,
in kvm_hypercall(), as relying on KVM to patch in the native hypercall on
a #UD for the "wrong" hypercall requires KVM_X86_QUIRK_FIX_HYPERCALL_INSN

647ffac11e KVM: selftests: Test masked events in PMU filter
Add testing to show that a pmu event can be filtered with a generalized
match on it's unit mask.

These tests set up test cases to demonstrate various ways of filtering
a pmu event that has multiple unit mask values. It does this by
setting up the filter in KVM with the masked events provided, then
enabling three pmu counters in the guest. The test then verifies that
the pmu counters agree with which counters should be counting and which
counters should be filtered for both a sparse filter list and a dense
filter list.

7b7027937d KVM: selftests: Add testing for KVM_SET_PMU_EVENT_FILTER
Test that masked events are not using invalid bits, and if they are,
ensure the pmu event filter is not accepted by KVM_SET_PMU_EVENT_FILTER.
The only valid bits that can be used for masked events are set when
using KVM_PMU_ENCODE_MASKED_ENTRY() with one exception: If any of the
high bits (35:32) of the event select are set when using Intel, the pmu
event filter will fail.

Also, because validation was not being done prior to the introduction
of masked events, only expect validation to fail when masked events
are used. E.g. in the first test a filter event with all its bits set
is accepted by KVM_SET_PMU_EVENT_FILTER when flags = 0.

The later doesn't require any special handling right now because the

129c48cde6 KVM: selftests: restore special vmmcall code layout needed by the harness
Commit 8fda37cf3d ("KVM: selftests: Stuff RAX/RCX with 'safe' values
in vmmcall()/vmcall()", 2022-11-21) broke the svm_nested_soft_inject_test
because it placed a "pop rbp" instruction after vmmcall. While this is
correct and mimics what is done in the VMX case, this particular test
expects a ud2 instruction right after the vmmcall, so that it can skip
over it in the L1 part of the test.

Inline a suitably-modified version of vmmcall() to restore the
functionality of the test.

a79b53aaaa KVM: x86: fix deadlock for KVM_XEN_EVTCHN_RESET
While KVM_XEN_EVTCHN_RESET is usually called with no vCPUs running,
if that happened it could cause a deadlock. This is due to

To avoid this, first collect all the evtchnfd objects in an

7a16142505 KVM: arm64: selftests: Don't identity map the ucall MMIO hole
Currently the ucall MMIO hole is placed immediately after slot0, which
is a relatively safe address in the PA space. However, it is possible
that the same address has already been used for something else (like the
guest program image) in the VA space. At least in my own testing,
building the vgic_irq test with clang leads to the MMIO hole appearing
underneath gicv3_ops.

Stop identity mapping the MMIO hole and instead find an unused VA to map
to it. Yet another subtle detail of the KVM selftests library is that
virt_pg_map() does not update vm->vpages_mapped. Switch over to
virt_map() instead to guarantee that the chosen VA isn't to something
else.

Fix a == vs. = typo in kvm_get_cpu_address_width() that results in

43e96957e8 KVM: selftests: Use pattern matching in .gitignore
Use pattern matching to exclude everything except .c, .h, .S, and .sh
files from Git. Manually adding every test target has an absurd
maintenance cost, is comically error prone, and leads to bikeshedding
over whether or not the targets should be listed in alphabetical order.

Deliberately do not include the one-off assets, e.g. config, settings,
.gitignore itself, etc as Git doesn't ignore files that are already in
the repository. Adding the one-off assets won't prevent mistakes where
developers forget to --force add files that don't match the "allowed".

9352e7470a Merge remote-tracking branch 'kvm/queue' into HEAD
x86 Xen-for-KVM:

* Allow the Xen runstate information to cross a page boundary

* Allow XEN_RUNSTATE_UPDATE flag behaviour to be configured

* add support for 32-bit guests in SCHEDOP_poll

x86 fixes:

* One-off fixes for various emulation flows (SGX, VMXON, NRIPS=0).

* Reinstate IBPB on emulated VM-Exit that was incorrectly dropped a few
years back when eliminating unnecessary barriers when switching between
   vmcs01 and vmcs02.

* Clean up the MSR filter docs.

* Clean up vmread_error_trampoline() to make it more obvious that params
must be passed on the stack, even for x86-64.

* Let userspace set all supported bits in MSR_IA32_FEAT_CTL irrespective
  of the current guest CPUID.

* Fudge around a race with TSC refinement that results in KVM incorrectly
thinking a guest needs TSC scaling when running on a CPU with a
constant TSC, but no hardware-enumerated TSC frequency.

* Advertise (on AMD) that the SMM_CTL MSR is not supported

* Remove unnecessary exports

Selftests:

* Fix an inverted check in the access tracking perf test, and restore
support for asserting that there aren't too many idle pages when
  running on bare metal.

* Fix an ordering issue in the AMX test introduced by recent conversions
to use kvm_cpu_has(), and harden the code to guard against similar bugs
in the future. Anything that tiggers caching of KVM's supported CPUID,
kvm_cpu_has() in this case, effectively hides opt-in XSAVE features if
the caching occurs before the test opts in via prctl().

* Fix build errors that occur in certain setups (unsure exactly what is
unique about the problematic setup) due to glibc overriding
static_assert() to a variant that requires a custom message.

* Introduce actual atomics for clear/set_bit() in selftests

Documentation:

* Remove deleted ioctls from documentation

* Various fixes

e8b9a055fa KVM: arm64: selftests: Align VA space allocator with TTBR0
An interesting feature of the Arm architecture is that the stage-1 MMU
supports two distinct VA regions, controlled by TTBR{0,1}_EL1. As KVM
selftests on arm64 only uses TTBR0_EL1, the VA space is constrained to
[0, 2^(va_bits-1)). This is different from other architectures that
allow for addressing low and high regions of the VA space from a single
page table.

KVM selftests' VA space allocator presumes the valid address range is
split between low and high memory based the MSB, which of course is a
poor match for arm64's TTBR0 region.

Allow architectures to override the default VA space layout. Make use of
the override to align vpages_valid with the behavior of TTBR0 on arm64.

eb5618911a KVM/arm64 updates for 6.2
- Enable the per-vcpu dirty-ring tracking mechanism, together with an
option to keep the good old dirty log around for pages that are
dirtied by something other than a vcpu.

 - Switch to the relaxed parallel fault handling, using RCU to delay
page table reclaim and giving better performance under load.

 - Relax the MTE ABI, allowing a VMM to use the MAP_SHARED mapping
option, which multi-process VMMs such as crosvm rely on.

 - Merge the pKVM shadow vcpu state tracking that allows the hypervisor
to have its own view of a vcpu, keeping that state private.

 - Add support for the PMUv3p5 architecture revision, bringing support
for 64bit counters on systems that support it, and fix the
no-quite-compliant CHAIN-ed counter support for the machines that
   actually exist out there.

 - Fix a handful of minor issues around 52bit VA/PA support (64kB pages
only) as a prefix of the oncoming support for 4kB and 16kB pages.

 - Add/Enable/Fix a bunch of selftests covering memslots, breakpoints,
stage-2 faults and access tracking. You name it, we got it, we
   probably broke it.

 - Pick a small set of documentation and spelling fixes, because no
good merge window would be complete without those.

As a side effect, this tag also drags:

 - The 'kvmarm-fixes-6.1-3' tag as a dependency to the dirty-ring
   series

 - A shared branch with the arm64 tree that repaints all the system
registers to match the ARM ARM's naming, and resulting in
   interesting conflicts
